According to the TNCC 's Graduation Transfer Retention report, only 15.7 percent of students were able to complete their degree in 2012. This statistic is appalling because the students are working hard in their classes, paying the college 's financial gills, and hoping to get their degree. Some of student cannot graduate. I am attending Thomas Nelson Community College, and I hope to earn my degree within two years. Although college is difficult, I will be successful by seeking advice from experts and developing some effective study strategies. When I was a student at Gallaudet University, I found college to be difficult. After five years, I was a junior. I faced many challenges. One challenge was the wrong major. I picked the Graphic Design major that I thought was the 3D Game designer. Truly, I did not know and did not research the major first before I took the courses without someone help me to find the right major. Another challenge was overwhelming classes. The classes were very tough, and I was trying to take the required classes to try to finish my major and get a degree. The teachers had high expectation, were not flexible, and were also strict in the most classes. In addition, I also struggled with my motivation. I lost motivation due to losing my …show more content…
Because college is difficult, I will seek advice from experts on learning. One expert is the famous author Stephen Covey. He uses the story of a bamboo plant to advise students to break our old habits into new habit levels and improve our educations. The second famous author is Yvonne Thornton. Her advice is from the rabbit theory. She means that she always joins the random group and ask what is going on to study something important in education. More likely to be aggressive to learn something new. Finally, the third most famous is Thomas Edison. His examples were that the students did not realize how close they were to success when they gave
According to the website cnu.edu about 67% of Christopher Newport University students graduated in 2014 within six years. This means 33% of the students failed to graduate within six years. This statistic makes me feel very confident with the school I choose. I plan to attend the Luter School of Business at Christopher Newport Univeristy and graduate with a degree in business management. I will overcome my challenges and become successful by seeking advice from experts, adopting effective strategies, and understanding the benefits of a college
According to Burchard, when we lose sight of what we desire, our passion and motivation are lost. The first thing he suggest is rest. The proper amount of rest and sleep is needed to rejuvenate the brain and body. He states that we should also visualize a white space, close your eyes off from everything else and just think about the things you’re excited about. Connect with your passions, dream up.
After listening to the wisdom of Husky, one can recognize that he offers valuable insights, but also provides some inaccurate information regarding academic affairs in community college. Beginning with the valuable information, he is correct when he states that the cost of community college, in both tuition and price-per-credit, is significantly lower than a four-year institution. He is also partly correct about the curriculum. For students enrolled with the intention of transferring to a four-year institution, general education courses in the liberal arts are offered that will transfer to their desired school. He explains that these liberal arts courses are generally smaller than those offered at larger schools, and provide for more interaction with the instructor – both claims are true.
Has there ever been a time that you have either received advice and refused to take it or learned something important later than you would have preferred? Most of us, including Thomas Jones, author of The Educated Person, and Malik, a character from the movie Higher Learning, can relate. Malik arrives to college a track star, thinking that he’s got it all figured out and that world owes him something. After a rude awakening by his performance in the class and on the track, Malik, although newly motivated, fails to take his professor’s advice to not let others categorize him by joining a group that does just that. Malik only truly realizes his professor’s advice after a tragic shooting takes place on campus.
While these were common struggles I was also finding difficulty in figuring out what I wanted to do. I entered UCI as a Psychology and Social Behavior major and with advices from other people I was pursuing Pre-Med as well and I started taking chemistry and biology classes. However, I was quick to find out that these classes were not for me which was reflected in my grades in those courses. Even though the initial couple of months were difficult, I found what I was passionate about which were the criminology classes that I began to take.
College Q&A Tega Orhorhoro Summary We conducted a two hour interview with three well rounded Wayne state students to learn about their experience in college and how they take on everyday challenges as a college student. Two out of our three interviewers are from the APEX program and have taken part in the summer bridge. We interviewed an English major who was also one of our tutor for writing class. They talk about what is like to work on campus as a freshman and how much it really takes out of your life.
General education classes are a common aspect of universities all across the country. However, after examining the statistics, I believe that colleges are requiring too many classes outside of students’ majors. Not only are students forced to enroll in courses that they are not interested in, but they are also struggling to stay motivated in school. Since students are not retaining the information gained in these classes, colleges are also putting these individuals in an unnecessary amount of debt. While there is merit in taking these general courses, the amount of classes needed over four years is discouraging and expensive.
As many struggles you are going to face it is going to pay off in the end. College teaches you more than just things about your major, it teaches you quality life skills. There are so many people in this world that don’t even get a job that their major is associated with and I think just going through college in general teaches you life skills you can use in the future. Not only did I get to meet my teacher in person, I was also able to learn more about her. I learned from her that there are many teachers out here that actually care about their students and want them to succeed in life.
5. All I could think is about wasting my major. I’m afraid that it will wasted my time when I decided to do something different and off point from my original major. How can I overcome this? I have to try for several courses that is related to more than one major.
College dropout rates are simply astonishing, with freshman dropout rates taking the lead. In the last few years, these rates have skyrocketed among all age groups. Some suspect it all starts freshman year. I wanted to know why the freshman dropout numbers have skyrocketed in the last few years, so I decided to pursue the question, what should colleges do in order to resolve this enormous problem?
"The end result of your life here on earth will always be the sum total of the choices you made while here.” This quote means, who you are and what you do with your life will forever define you, even when you are gone. This quote is very similar to the R&B singer Beyoncé’s song “I Was Here”, which was featured on her fourth studio album titled “4”. I compare this quote to her song because in the song, she sings about how when she leaves the earth, she wants to remembered for all off the good she done and the many lives she has impacted meaning family and friends or fans. Though this song reflects on the positive things she has done, the quote implies both good and bad choices we choose to make.
Retention issues are an increasing concern to many institutions nationwide, most especially retention of minority students (Tinto 1987, Newman et al., 1998, Cole 2008, Veenstra 2009, Pidcock et al., 2008) and students in STEM disciplines (Tsui 2007, Cole 2008, Crisp 2009, Wilson et al., 2012). Bean (1986) concluded that institutional reasons for concern about retention rates are not simply financial, but relate also to the (1) possible attrition of college faculty because of feelings of demoralization when students withdraw or chose to transfer to another school or program, and (2) lack of demonstration of good faith that colleges and universities face when not fully ensuring success of their students. Mitigation of these issues has been a
The Obstacles I face in going to college If you have never been to college or your starting college after years of not going, it can be very difficult to start or continue to go. It can be very stress full to juggle family and school.
Choosing a college major is one of the most important decisions in a person’s life. The effect choosing a college major has on one’s life is much like a small ripple in the middle of a vast ocean. In the students senior year it is a simple seemingly inconsequential click of a button on an online application. But by the time this once meek ripple reaches the shore of the students’ life it has already transformed into a great tidal wave that has influenced their life every step of the way.
I dreaded it going into it, but I knew the basic steps and realistically, I didn’t need to be good at it. I had a hundred in the class anyway (everyone did.) I just needed to get through it. I thought about what I was passionate about. Books, movies, and TV shows, of course, but I had to go deeper.
