Firstly, let me define what is stress and the types of stress. Stress is “a disruption in one’s psychobiological balance and sense of harmony within oneself and/or with the social and physical environments.” (Edlin and Golanty, 2010, P46) Stress could also be defined as a state of mental or emotional strain resulting from adverse or demanding circumstances. There are three types of stress which is Distress, Eustress and Neustress. Distress is a negative form of stress which occurs in reaction to something we perceive as bad. For example, distress negative emotions are extreme worry, sorrow or pain which would occurs in situations such as death, unemployment and conflict in interpersonal relationships. Eustress is a positive form of stress …show more content…
There are two types of white blood cells which are lymphocytes and phagocytes. When a person is under a condition of negative stress, his/her immune system’s ability to fight off antigens would reduce which results him/her more susceptible to infections. For example, my appetite tends to decrease before the exam period due to my stress on understanding every topic. With the decreasing of my appetite, it leads to poor nutrition and lack of nutritional energy which is used to support immune functioning and the function of the entire body. Therefore, stress weakens my immune system. This is because stress can cause an increase in corticosteroid which is a type of stress hormone that can supress the effectiveness of the immune system such as lowers the number of lymphocytes. Negative stress can also have an indirect effect on the immune system if a person uses unhealthy behavioural coping strategies such as consumption of excess alcohol, smoking and poor diet to reduce their …show more content…
High level of debt is due to phone bills, provide money for family as well as family expenses. Therefore, I would need to work after school, weekends and holiday period to cover my daily expenses as well as family expenses. This causes me to have insufficient sleep which leads my cells in my blood that fight infections are not working to keep infections at bay thus leading me often getting sick easily. In addition, heavy workload and debt also caused me to have lots of negative emotions appear such as depression, frustration and anxiety. When I am having these negative emotions, I would be unable to have relax myself therefore my stress increases causing my immune system to weaken. Before elaborating on how the immune system responds to stress, I would firstly define what is immune system and how is it build up. Immune system is our body’s defense against infectious organisms and other invaders. Through a series of steps which is called the immune response, the immune system attacks organisms and substances that invade body systems and cause disease. It is made up of a net of cells, tissues and organs. These work together to protect our
1. Identify two positive attributes of stress. Stress can give you courage and make you social, strengthen relationships with people. 2.
According to National Institute of Health, stress is an internal state that people experience as they encounter changes throughout their lives. III. I have learned about the effects of stress due to my personal experience such as dealing with depression, weight gain, and being antisocial. IV. Today I will explain the physical, mental, and emotional effects of stress.
Stress is an internal response to external factors. Any event that causes us to react either physically, emotionally, or mentally is considered stress. Stress events may be pleasant, unpleasant, mild, or intense. The word stress comes from a Latin term meaning “strain, pressure, or force”. In general, EMS encounters
Stress can do many things to your body. It affects the nervous system, the heart and hormones just to name a few. Our body reviews all situations and decides whether or not it is stressful. This decision is made based on sensory input and processing and also on stored memories. The stress response begins in the brain.
UNHEALTHY CELLS = SICKNESS The cellular environment is affected by stress in general, physical, chemical and emotional stress suffered by the individual. At the cell level, it is always a chemical stress, and a harmful chemical environment is produced. It is the stress molecules such as catecholamines (adrenalin and noradrenalin) and steroids (e.g. cortisol) that are presented to cells following neuroendocrine responses as a result of all kinds of stress experienced by the individual.

Chronic Stress: What It Does and How to Fix It Stress is something everyone experiences, regardless of social status, ethnicity, and/or background. Stress can be healthy in moderation, but when it continues for a prolonged amount of time, the stressed individual will begin to experience negative effects.
Stress. Stress, a complex phenomenon involving the process of interaction between individual and the environment (Cox et al., 2000), is conceptualized as the response to an inappropriate level of pressure or environmental threat rather than the pressure itself (Arroba & James, 1987, p. 21; Ogden, 2007). Along with high level of stress, psychological, biochemical, behavioral and physiological symptoms may occur, which may lead to an increase in dissatisfaction, anxiety, psychological and physical deterioration (Cox et al., 2000). For example, the body’s immune system’s capability of preventing from illness is considered to be affected by neurological and hormonal changes (McEwen, 2006). Moreover, occupational stress has been directly related
When our body is under attack, in terms of stress-related issues, the lymphocytes take over and try their hardest to fight off the diseases and foreign substances. Furthermore, it was shown in studies that stress similarly depresses the immune system, which ultimately makes the body more vulnerable to illness. Stress on the body and internal organs can lead to
With uncontrolled inflammation release, immune response dysregulates due to over work and shuts down. The net effect as a result is rampant inflammation in the body causing: Autoimmune disorders. E.g., arthritis, autism, cancer, and stroke Exposure to infections Worsening of pre-existing clinical disorders Exposure to environmental irritants and food allergies Other (NEM) stress response systems also get affected. Signs that manifest in chronic inflammation are, bloating, food sensitivities, brain fog,

3. Review of literature 3.1 Stress and its types: Stress is an essential mediator of human behaviour. Immediate physiological response to any type of stressor facilitates survival of the species at its maximum. Despite of normal homeostatic regulatory mechanism, the stress responses can become maladaptive. Chronic stress, for example immobilization, exposure to noise, irradiations, psychological stress can leads to a host of adverse health consequences, including cardiovascular diseases, neurodegeneration, obesity, depression and early ageing (McEwen et al, 2004).
Overview of Immune system The human body provides the ideal environment for the microbes such as bacteria, viruses, parasites and fungi to enter the body. Thus, it is the jobs of the immune system to keep them out by protect the body from the harmful substances. Immune system is when the networks of cells and tissues work together to defend the body against the foreign invaders.(Menche,2012 and National Institute Health,2003). According to the Latin word, immune come from the word immunis which is free or untouched. So it is mean that our body must free from the all pathogens that can lead to the diseases.
According from the book of Oxford Concise Dictionary. “Stress is being subjected to physical, mental or emotional strain in response to real or imagined stimuli. These stimuli, known as stresses induce a natural “flight-or-fight” response in the body, as the body prepares to respond to a real or imagined threat to its equilibrium." Stress is an inevitable part of our life, no matter who you are, no matter what you are doing it will always affect your own personal aspect of life. Whether you work in an office or from home, stress will always push us to work harder to cope with work deadlines.
