During the special collections trip to the library, Thomas Heywood’s The Hierarchy of the Blessed Angels caught my attention. In truth, it was not only the content but also the full page artwork that drew me in. I visited the special collections library multiple times, and then also consulted the internet. I utilized the website Internet Archive to view a digital facsimile of the book as well as the Early English Books Text Creation Partnership I to view the text alone. It presented the text in three different ways, a physical version of the book, an online version of the book, and an online version of just the text.
On the outside, it appears nothing more than an aged hardback, leather-bound book. There is a scar running down the back cover,

The only quirk is the “5” from the date is turned on its side otherwise it doesn't look like it would fit there. Below that in extremely small letters is “T.Cecill Sculp”. T. Cecill Sculp, according to the library catalogue, is the person who did the engraving for the title page. On the left-hand side of this page is the “Electi” or the chosen angels. There is a ladder, “Jacob's Ladder”, up to heaven with four angels climbing it, and a man with a shepherd's pole, resting. Then on the other side, the one labeled “Reiecti, or the fallen, it depicts wingless men, about four of them, some with horns, falling from the clouds into the mouth of a beast/hell. The Reiecti is shaded much darker than the then Electi side. At the top of the page and above all else are large clouds that cover the top of the archway, and is were the Electi are climbing to, and the Reiecti are falling from. In these clouds are little cherubs surrounding a circle that encloses the trinity and little bubbles that state the different types of angels as well as some Latin words. Another interesting place that deals with differing font sizes, is the dedication page. The dedication page also uses three styles of font and about five different sizes. The more important the word such as “The most excellent and incomparable lady” “Henretta Maria” “Queen” …show more content…
Like the actual book, it is still divided up into sections, but the side notes are gone along with any art or stamps. However, they did keep some strange typeset errors which in my opinion added something to the online text. However, if I wouldn’t have seen the physical copy I might have assumed that it was a peculiar typo created during the transfer of text from book to database, rather than a typeset error from the book itself. Reading the book in its original presentation gives it a completely different feel, especially compared to the EEBO TCPI . When reading it from the original book, I can develop a feel for what sort of person owned the book, which then gives me an idea of the intended audience. I am able to see the artwork, study the finer details, and tell if it is a more serious piece, or if it is satirical. When reading The Hierarchy of the Blessed Angels from a physical copy, it’s easy to see the religious, scholastic vibe of the book. One of the most important issues is that it’s easy to see how the book is broken up, whereas online it all runs together. Thus detracting from the importance of how the book is broken into the 9
The novel that I chose to read was The Killer Angels by Michael Shaara. The Killer Angels is a historical fiction novel based on the Civil War. The setting of the book starts in June in 1863 on the 29th and goes through July 3rd. The story starts in Pennsylvania with the Confederate army moving towards Gettysburg in the span of the first few days. The main characters are General Robert E. Lee who was the commander of the Confederate army, Lee’s number two, General James Longstreet and Colonel Joshua L. Chamberlain from the Union side.
The writing in the chapters is very detail oriented and it makes it very easy to imagine what is going on. A lot of times throughout the book it seemed like I was right there, or it seemed like I was watching a scene from a movie.
Once he approached the gloomy monument and he noticed that what Chillingworth left was not of his, but it was Dimmesdale’s bible. The ill pastor examined the holy scripture and one the cover he noticed the A on “Catholic Bible” was circled with a bloody red marker. The pastor glanced around and
The book that I am reading for my summer reading is Fallen Angels by Walter Dean Myers. This book is about soldiers who are fighting in the Vietnam War. The book focuses around the main protagonist Richard Perry and is in first person through Perry’s perspective of the war. Perry’s life is different compared to mine for instance Perry is the age 17, he has a single mother and younger brother he is having to support by joining the army while just finishing high school. While I have both my parents and a sister, and I do not have to support my family., and just starting high school.
I think this book was well organized in its chapter and sub chapters. For a guy who despises reading, this book was not that tough as read as I expected especially for it being about history and non-fiction. There was nothing for me to be excited about going in, but I got through it without much struggle. The book had some weird names, some Latin words, and some unusual vocabulary. Other than a couple of words, this book was an easy to understand, thus making it an easy read.
During the actual war, the soldiers of the Confederacy and of the Union often tended to demonize one another. In order to be able to kill someone, the soldiers had to think of that person as less than human, or else the guilt of killing another man could become unbearably difficult to live with. Both the North and the South are often presented as noble men fighting for their way of life against slavery, or for federal control of states. Some of those examples of hatred and demonization were presented to readers during the course of the book. However, there was not enough for the reader to get a sense of how brutal and vicious the Civil War was outside of the battlefield because The Killer Angels is a war between gentlemen.
The haunting cover image of a dark night and the absence of hope in humanity sets the tone for what readers can expect within its
Among those highlighted in the book, an entire chapter is dedicated to

The stanzas in which the psalm should be sung are marked by capital letters illuminated in different colors ranging from red, purple, blue, and green. Following these letters, the text of each stanza is hand written in ink in Latin. This psalm contains large vertical and a large rightward margin drawing the readers eye to the center of the work. The word ECLINA is displayed next to Christ’s image illuminated in purple in all capital letters.
I thought that these were good reasons why the book is so different from the
The questions about angels that Billy Collins uses in his writing, is a reflection of uncertainty that he himself has on religion. This can be seen in several instances, however two that a reader often might glance over is when Billy Collins writes, “ Do they sit alone in little gardens changing colors”, and “ Do they swing like children from hinges” (3). Starting off with the first question he poses a reader might think the Billy Collins is referring to the flowers changing color in heaven. However if one takes a deeper look into the poem, we can see that he 's actually referring to the skin tone of the angels themselves. Posing numerous other questions, such as “what race are angels?”, and “what does this mean about our current representation of heaven”.
The books are only used for their appearance, obscuring their content in uncut pages perfectly mirroring the
On the inside of the back binding, the name Phillip C. Duschnes can be found on a sticker. Phillip C. Duschnes was a widely known book collector in New York City during the 19th Century who bought many rare books. It is not certain when Mr. Duschnes would have bought the book, but it is very likely he would have gone to a book auction to buy it and many others. There are not enough records to show what happened directly after he owned it, but eventually George F. Pinne, a doctor from the Omaha area, was the owner of The Works of Geoffrey Chaucer. According to Special Collections staff member Allison, Mr. Pinne met a Grinnell College official during the Cold War.
On page 3, the author includes a splash. The author includes a caption in the middle, saying, “In The Beginning Darkness Upon The Face Of The Deep.” The author includes a flashback so people understand that peace is close. Specifically, this is an allusion to the denouement of World War l. On page 4, the author used a speech balloon on the last panel of the bottom tier when the girl says, “In the beginning god created the dark, then the light, then mother and me and then the others and it was good.”
