There Is Love At First Sight In Romeo And Juliet

Although Romeo was so sad Rosaline didn’t love him back, he was able to rebound and find interest in Juliet. Romeo says, “Did my heart love till now? Forswear it, sight! / For I ne’er saw true beauty till this night”(1.5.51-52).

To begin with, Romeo is all too eager to find love, and rushes to find a new pretty face. Immediately after laying eyes on Juliet, Romeo is transfixed and believes that it is true love. Later that night, he wishes to marry her, saying that he can have satisfaction with “The exchange of thy love’s faithful vow for mine” (II. 2. 127). Romeo knows nothing about Juliet, only that she is the most beautiful girl that he has ever seen. Even after his last relationship fails, Romeo does not learn.

The second Romeo saw Juliet’s face, Romeo fell in love. This shows Romeo’s character. One hour ago he was grieving about Rosaline and right away he finds another girl. He fell in love to recover from his break up with Rosaline. After the two met, they wanted to get married right away even though their families hated each other.

Romeo went through two loves throughout this novel, one real love and one not. Romeo’s first love or what he thought was love, was with a girl with the name of Rosaline. “Out of her favor, where I am in love” (1.1.173). . This quotation represents that Romeo loved Rosaline without knowing her. In the novel Romeo fell head over heels for Rosaline based on her looks.

Before he loved Juliet, he loved Rosaline although she did not love him back. Romeo says about Rosaline, “She hath forsworn to love, and in that vow / Do I live dead, that I live to tell it now” (I.i.231-232). When he sees Juliet for the first time, Romeo describes Juliet as, “As a rich jewel in an Ethiop’s ear- / Beauty too rich for use, for Earth too dear” (I.iv.53-54).

The impulse decisions made by Romeo and Juliet and the actions displayed for their “love” are emotionally charged and are based on initial feelings, therefore, their love is not true. Romeo and Juliet both have affection for each other, but it is truly only from the physical appearances they base their love on. When Romeo sees Juliet for the first time at the Capulet party, the first thought he had was that he loved her. True love isn’t based on just looks and looks were the only thing that Romeo could see at that point. When Romeo asked Friar Lawrence to marry him and Juliet, Friar says “Young men’s love then lies not truly in their hearts, but in their eyes,” (Act 2, Scene 3).

In the last line, Romeo expresses that, because his love for Rosaline is not mutual, the love he is feeling is very painful, rough and confusing. Therefore, Romeo expresses his feelings of love as a feeling of torment, because of Rosaline’s rejection. In other words, Romeo is emotionally heartbroken,

Alan Watts once said, “Never pretend to a love which you do not actually feel, for love is not ours to command.” (brainyquotes.com). Watts is saying that we can't just say that we love someone, we have to feel our heart swell with the love we have for that person. In William Shakespeare's, The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet, Romeo and Juliet are not truly in love because they automatically fall ‘in love’ after seeing each other once, they decide to get married a few hours after they meet and they are too immature to actually know what love is . One reason Romeo and Juliet are not truly in love is that they fell in love right after they meet (lust at first sight).

During their time together, they completely put all things aside and forget everything about the world except for their love for one another. Most people seem to think this way about the romance between Romeo and Juliet, but in reality, they aren’t actually truly in love. It pretty much covers this love throughout the entire story line. Although one example of this is when Romeo and Juliet first meet, Romeo quotes, “O, then, dear saint, let lips do what hands do. They pray; Grant thou, lest faith turn to despair.” (1.5.102-3). In this case Romeo is wanting Juliet to kiss him, which in this same conversation juliet wants the same thing.
