Sociological imagination is the ability to see the one’s own problem or relations in a different perspective and to think outside the box. In the book “The Sociological Imagination” written by C. W. Mills, Mills says that sociological imagination enables us to grasp history and biography and the relations between the two within society (Elwell,2013). While many sociologists have different understanding to this concept, so they concluded to use Mills definition of sociological imagination as “the vivid awareness of the relationship between personal experience and the wider society” (Crossman,2016). My grandfather wasn’t well educated but he knew education was important. Malaysia’s economy during the 80’s was peaked at early 80’s which enabled more Malaysian to study abroad. Since we had a relative living in the States my grandfather sent most of my uncles, aunts and my father to study in the States during the 80’s. Now most of cousins who wants to study abroad want to go to the States to study including me as we link good overseas education is with universities in the States. The linking of good overseas education with universities in the States can be related with symbolic interactionism. In doing this a person can discover that the current social structure and culture that surrounds them can be the root cause of their personal problems. Sociological imagination can be defined as one’s awareness of the impact that society has on their personal life because of the outside conditions and circumstances. The outside world create standards for people, even if they do not know that they are being looked at in this way. Therefore, society influences a person’s behavior and limits their free will. This theory is clearly demonstrated in The Truman Show. The movie helps to deepen my understanding of sociological imagination and helps me to see how the outside world controls my life.

The sociological imagination refers to Mills notion on how social forces can influence an individual. He refers to it as an ability to see situations in a broader social spectrum and see how interactions can influence an individual and situations. It is important in terms of studying society because it is a way to help us see things not how they appear to be on a surface elements but through an alternative perspective. The differences between micro and macrosociology is that micro sociology studies people at an interpersonal way, such as face to face interactions while macro sociology studies people on a much larger scale by looking at the bigger picture. A societal issue that can be studied using both perspectives would be divorce.
