No one knows whether karma actually exists or if it is superstition. According to the teaching of Hinduism, karma is the results, depending on one’s good or bad action, either in this life or in a reincarnation. Many people do not believe in such invisible connection, but in the world, inexplicable things actually exist. These mysteries are complexly intertwined with each other and passed down to the next generation. Also one’s action is highly affected by human gene. Can learning important life lessons and gradually maturing as a human being. Pulitzer-winning author Junot Diaz introduces these unexplained these mysterious cycles in his novel, “This Is How You Lose Her”; it brings up some controversial issues. Elvis has a secret; he has another family and son just by accident. When Yunior and Elvis visits the family in Santo Domingo, Yunior saw Elvis’s son, who has mosquito bites all over his legs and an old scab on his head, and naturally Yunior hug the boy. This is the first time Yunior shows empathy to someone. Probably, Yunior sees himself through the wounded boy since Yunior had much emotional damage to his heart. In addition, he just broke up with a law student and she left him with her baby, so Yunior might think if he had a baby, it might look like this boy. Then, when Elvis decided to confess his secret to his wife, Yunior pulled Elvis back and suggests taking a DNA test with both Elvis and the boy. Yunior seriously thinks about Elvis’s happiness and save Elvis’s family from breakdown. Yunior is no longer a person who always cares about only himself. Through Yunior’s actions, the readers see how he has grown up as a human being.
In short, Diaz depicts how close people’s actions influence other’s personalities. His theme of family relationship is expressed beautifully through his characters and symbols. As we can see Yunior’s change; we have some hope that we will change bad Karma through our
