Myth, “a traditional story, especially one concerning the early history of people or explaining some natural or social phenomenon.” (Now that is a dictionary version of what myth is and it makes it seem like myths are just stories that people made in the past and believed in.) Although most myths were made to explain the world around people, myths also have themes or lessons in them that can teach people lots of things even in today’s societies. “The Wooden People” (A Mayan creation story) and the Creek creation story, both explore the theme of being ignorant resulting in punishments that has been bestowed upon humans or things like humans.

This quote from “The Wooden people” ,“Their faces were crushed by things made out of wood and stone” (19). The quote shows that “The Wooden People” were crushed by stones which is not possible and so is an example of personification. Stones and wood are non living things that cannot move or harm someone unless it is done by humans on purpose. Similarly, an example of personification is found in the “Creek” myth, “Things went well with the animals and the Earth, but after a while the animals complained of the lack of purpose in their life” (creek). In this quote it shows that the animals complained to the Creator of how they did not have anything to do, but animals are living creatures that cannot talk in the first place. Correspondingly, another example of personification being used in the myths is, “Everything spoke, their plates, their cooking pots, their dogs, their grinding stones, each and every thing crushed their faces” (The Wooden People 19). This quote shows how personification is conveyed in myths and how “The Wooden People” gets punished by non living things. Personification in both myths presents the ignorance of humans as it gives the non-livings human like
In the article of the Creek Indians, Christina Snyder portrays her thoughts on slavery and how Europeans, Natives, and African Americans all had their different point of view on slavery. Some traditions included holding captives then sending them free after their laboring was done. While others used captives as rewards or punishment because of the kinship system they tried to tie into slavery. Throughout the article Creek Indians went into rebellion with the Americans to fight for lands while starting new traditions into slavery mixing up political views and religious views all around the South.
The Eastern Woodland Natives were a tribe that lived in the Mississippi region. They had a unique culture. They also had different survival skills. Those survival skills helped them. They were the eastern woodland natives.
How do you cope with the reality of day to day life? I would like to think I handle the reality of day to day life moderately well like everyone else. However, I began to question myself once again as I read Ambrose Bierce’s “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge.” This story, with its unexpected ending, had me rereading it several times to pull out key details that led me down the wrong path the first time.
Muscogee(Creek) Nation The Muscogee (Creek) Nation was part of the FIve Civilized Tribes. The Creek Nation is the fourth biggest tribe in the United States. This large tribe has a culturally vast and extensive history. Part of the Muscogee Creek Nation´s history includes removal of a portion of the tribe from their homes in Florida and Alabama to their current home in Oklahoma.
One example of personification is when comes to visit Grant after work: “A little farther over, where another patch of cane was standing, tall and blue-green, you could see the leaves swaying softly from a breeze.” (Gaines 86) The use of personification is effective because it allows the reader to visualise. In this instance, it creates an image of the leaves swaying in the wind.
Grant Williams Motif Essay Mythology Apr 5, 2023 Important Creation Myths I think there are many important motifs in all of the different creation myths that we studied this semester. There were many different motifs that I could have used but I picked the ones that I felt were most important to the creation of Earth and life. One of the motifs I picked was about how the gods worked so hard and struggled to create Humans and Earth as we know it today. Another motif I chose was humans being killed off by the gods.
Authors of both articles agree that the human imagination is an important aspect of the creation process. According to the articles the modern world as we see it, is a result of the needs that individuals have and see the need to fulfill them. Slabbert and Viljoen use shamanic properties to show the connection between Shadow and the different mythical cultures. Blomqvist, on the other hand, concentrates more on the different contemporary perspectives of modern cultures and the limitations that it brings. The two different views combine to show the power of the human beliefs in the creation of myths about their
For example, in the reading, it says “gaping and crunching like a mountain lion,” In other words, this quote means that when the cyclops was eating the author described the way he was eating like he never ate before and can tell how hungry he was. For example, the words like “gaping” and “crunching” describe the way the cyclops were eating. The words the author uses makes the Cyclops a monster. Another example from the text is “who cast your lives like dice, and ravage other folk by sea?” In other words, this quote means that they created their lives by luck.
For example, in the episode “The Land of the Dead”, Odysseus reported, “Then I addressed the blurred and breathless dead.” (Homer 1065). This represents bravery because Odysseus went to the Underworld to see Tiresias, the Underworld is an extremely fiery, spine-chilling place. It takes a truly brave person to go there. The author uses imagery in the quote, by saying “the blurred and breathless dead”, it helps the reader visualize the dreary people Odysseus is seeing.
“The house shuddered, oak bone on bone, its bared skeleton cringing from the heat, its wire, its nerves revealed as if a surgeon had torn the skin off to let the red veins and capillaries quiver in the scalded air.” (Bradbury 291) Was a quote from the Story There Will Come Soft Rains. This is showing how the house is moving and is still working even without humans living in it. This example is all personification because it says how the house has bone and the skeleton cringe. Obviously Houses don't have bones, or a skeleton, and, veins.
Two Authors, Two Books, Two Religions Nowadays, Greek and Roman mythology are considered fiction, but once upon a time they were known as very serious religions. Despite the similarities between the two, such as their gods, origins, and beliefs, they were known as enemies. They often fought over these similarities to argue which side was better. Not only was their conflict because of the resemblance to one another, they also clashed over differences such as their heroes and the characteristics of their gods. Knowing what makes them alike or what makes them different is a good way to understand the religion and also the way of life during the Greece and Roman times.
An example of allusion is “We are apt to shut our eyes against a painful truth, and listen to the song of that siren till she transforms us into beasts.” Henry made reference to the siren and the song that makes people lose their minds. An example of metaphor is “I have but one lamp by which my feet are guided, and that is the lamp of experience.” He was comparing his experiences to a lamp that guided him. An example of imagery is “...and have implored its interposition to arrest the tyrannical hands of the ministry and Parliament.”
The most important way to think about myths is that they are symbolic stories that attempt to answer difficult human questions about the universe. For instance, where did we and the world come from? And what is the meaning of life?. “We all want to know where we came from, but because our earliest beginnings are lost in the mists of prehistory, we have created myths about our forefathers that are not historical but help to explain current attitudes about our environment, neighbors and customs” (6). Myth functions as a guidance that explains everything that we come into contact with in the universe.
In literature sometimes animals, objects and characters are personify to convey or symbolize different themes, in the fiction book Moby Dick by Herman Melville this is the case. Moby-Dick is the story of Ahab the captain of a whaling ship who embarks in a quest to hunt a white whale that bit off one of his legs, the story is told by the main character Ishmael who is a sailor in Ahab’s ship, which ends in a tragic ending where everyone dies except for him. Herman uses metaphors, symbolism, and personification to express different themes throughout his book. He uses Ishmael- the main character- to symbolize how often people feel that life is meaningless and what they resolve to do because of it, Queequeg a cannibal is used to represent the ignorance
X-G-A-T-K-E-V… The alphabet song is the most well known song in American culture, so deeply ingrained in the consciousness of everyone from four to ninety-four that if you start singing, the odds are almost certain that someone else will join in. It is memorized by rote at the earliest point possible in the lives of children, and stays with them forever. However, few stop to think about the influence that a mere twenty-six Latin letters have on our lives and how impressive it is that language in its present form can exist at all. Every element of language, from the arrangement of the letters to its goal of communication, arises from disorder and creates a structure that allows incredible creativity and form.
