While a particular branch might have specific jobs, there are limiting factors that also keep them from becoming too powerful. This slows the efficiency of decision making but that is a purposeful design from its initial set up.

Ultimately, a lot has changed including the times and we no longer have a tyranny or monarchy who progressively rule. The Legislative branch can check the executive by accepting the already vetoed law and can impeach or fire the president out of office. The Justice Branch can make sure peoples rights and liberties are being followed and check if the laws follow the constitution's rules.
