The Teaching Role In College Education

Caroline Bird discusses, in “College is a waste of Time and Money,” her opinion on the recurring failure of education in universities. Bird alleges that college is not for everyone, but society forces high school graduates to go to college. College is believed to be the ticket to a successful career, however it some cases it is a waste of time because some classes are worthless. Those who actually decide to go to college, do so because it is a safe haven and it is payed for by parents. It is at the end a waste of time and money, according to Caroline Bird.

These are the benfits for college. College is an investment in rder to earn more money later on. College is important to attend in order to have a stable income later in life. Furthermore, some may say that the debt that is stapled along with colege is too steap and makes it to where the entire process

After reading and analyzing, “Is College Worth It?” by David Leonhart and “Why College Isn’t for Everyone” by Chris Matthews, I have concluded that it is important and beneficial to attend college. Although, Chris Matthew made a compelling argument on why college is not for everyone such as, “ Up to 25% of college grads would probably be better off not pursuing a degree, yet nobody actually thinks they are going to be the ones for whom the investment doesn’t pay off.” Unfortunately, he previously had contradicted himself saying, “First, we don’t know for sure how much money this bottom quarter of degree holding earners would have made without their college education.” I disagree with Chris Matthews because although 25% of people who attend college do not become more “successful” than those who chose not to attend college, there a lingering prominent 75% that is out in the world being positively affected by the decision of attending college.

A decline in literacy, an inability to recruit qualified college graduates for teaching positions, unequal access to educational resources, stagnant compensation for teachers, and many more issues all play a part in the decline of public education (Edsall 1). However, one of the biggest and worsening problems within the education system is the sharp decline of qualified people to fill teaching positions. Researchers have found that there are at least 36,000 vacant teaching positions and at least 163,000 teaching positions that are being filled by underqualified teachers (Edsall 2). Schools are continuing to adopt harder academic standards, and the teachers are left scrambling to try and make their own curriculum with little to no helpful resources on hand (Will 1). One of the biggest reasons why there are fewer and fewer teachers in the education field is the lack of adequate pay for their important jobs and responsibilities (Toch 2).

We as a society are manipulated by the idea that a college education will fix all of our problems and allow us to pursue a successful life. In the essay “College In America” by Caroline Bird mentions that a college education is not the best choice for all high school graduates because it leads to the assumption that a college education is the only possible way to establish one’s identity in society. Although college is the staple after graduating high school not all sustain the qualities it takes to succeed in the intellectual work given and some career fields do not have a connecting relationship to a college education reminding us that even though these claims are based in the 1970s it is still relevant in today’s society.

Abraham Lincoln, our own sixteenth president once said, "The philosophy of the school room in one generation will be the philosophy of government in the next. " The concept of going to college is an important subject in most people's lives. Family members and teachers have stressed the importance of furthering your education after high school for almost your whole educational career. A university experience is extremely beneficial in this world, broadening one's horizons to endless possibilities.

“In a neoliberal age the main purpose of education is simply to produce producers and not so much about providing students with real education.” (deresiewicz p.2) With that said schools are not teaching to actually learn anything but just to get a job. William also brings up that learning is at risk for students. College has three separate purposes, the commercial which prepares you to start a career, the moral which helps you determine your own beliefs and the cognitive which helps you learn how to think better.

College is Worth the Cost College is the next higher level of education after high school. Many students go to college to get a bachelor’s degree for his or her major, and some students go farther than that to get a masters or a doctorates’ degree. The argument between people in today’s society is whether college is worth the cost. College is worth the cost students pay because people, who attend college get better jobs, make more money, and college improves his or her worth ethics and character.

Many people feel it is beneficial to invest money on a college education. In most cases, earning more money depends on the field one chooses to enter after graduating from college. Most employers today want to see an applicant have some sort of higher education when applying for jobs as this has changed from the past. As there are many paths one can take to be successful a college education is the most traditional idea of how to live the “American Dream”. Dreams of attending college, getting married, and starting a family are the typical persons aspirations.

A Look into The Purpose Of College When thinking about the purpose of college, most people tend to lean towards either job-driven or life-driven. In the article “What’s The Purpose Of College?”, Brandon Busteed looks deeper into the meaning of the purpose of college. Instead of looking at college as solely preparation for a good job, we can also look at it as a way to prepare a person for a successful life through broad education. After reading this article, I agree with the author that the purpose of college is equally preparing students for jobs while also assisting them in ways to thrive throughout their life to be successful with a purpose. People being educated can be a great influence to people in today’s society. Charles Murray believe that a college degree is like a “a price ticket for employees”. The two reasons Murray says is that “employees do not value what students learned, just that the student has a degree” the other reason is “employees do not even look at applicants who have no college degree”. College is beneficial and plays a big part because we can gain more knowledge and learn how to be a responsible young adult and about our own

For many people, college is an important key for their future. Some people go to college for the job opportunities and the new windows it can open. Others go just for the education and experience. A good education is beneficial from many different viewpoints; in truth, it is a possibility that one's adult life could be much harder than people care to think. One can have better wealth, is less likely to be unemployed, and a much higher chance of being closer to your family.

The most beneficial thing in life is to study something that interests you. When students are choosing what college to further their studies they consider: the cost, the social status of the school, and the programs the college carries. Professor Mark Edmunson gives his message on what students should consider in his article "Who Are You and What Are You Doing Here?", published on August 22nd 2011 in Issue 74 in The Oxford American. This essay is about Edmundson's viewpoint on education and that it is hard to get one. But if you do something you enjoy doing and work hard at it you will become successful.

It is easy to think college is not worth the cost to become better, but getting educated makes people better, and happier in the future and sometimes even in better health (Leonhardt 25 ). Becoming a better and happier person is good for everyone. Even former President Obama says “‘Education helps us be better people. It helps us be better citizens. You came to college to learn about the world and to engage with new ideas and to discover the things you 're passionate about -- and maybe have a little fun’”

TRADITIONAL TEACHING METHODS TO TEACH WITHN THE CONTEXT OF HIGHER EDUCATION Teaching methods refers to the general principles, pedagogy and management strategies used to classroom instruction. The choice to teaching methods depends on what fits educational philosophy, classroom demographic, subject area and school mission statement. The teaching theories can be arrangement into four categories and based on two major parameters- a teacher centred approach versus and a student –centred approach, and high tech material use versus low-tech material use. TEACHER-CENTRED APPROACH TO LEARNING Taken to its most extreme interpretation, teachers are the main figure in a teacher-centred instruction model.
