After David died from heart failure in 1957, Mary’s mother sold the house and took Mary back to live in the house that she has grew up in. Mary stated, “ he is asking for private forgiveness, not from the person he has harmed, but in the name of others (Gordon 152).” She does not know why the Nazi is asking for forgiveness, “what does the Nazi expect to gain from being forgiven (Gordon 152)?” Mary believed that forgiveness will not undo what had happened. It is not going to bring all of the Jew’s lives back. Forgiveness can be good for both sides, but the pain would still be there, in those people who had suffered from all the torture. She said the Nazi is wrong in two ways for asking Simon for forgivenesses. First of all, the Nazi is using Simon as a symbol to represent all of the Jews (Gordon 153) . According to what Mary said, “A symbol, by its nature, is communal, and its status can be bestowed only by the community. There is no such thing as a privately symbolic figure (Gordon 153).” The Nazi should’ve apologized publicly instead of privately. “No one can grant forgiveness as a private person in the name of another, for that would be theft of the wounded person’s right to forgive or not forgive,” quoted

When reading this passage I had to look up the word, "Lethal" which means "sufficient to cause death", I also had to look up the word "uttering" that means " make a sound with ones voice". This quote makes me feel very sad and mad because she is trying to help the Jews by warning them and they are beating her and gagging her, That makes me disgusted. I think people didn't believe her because it was pitch black at the time and no one saw anything while she was screaming fire, fire. That is a warning for the Jews to save themselves and try to escape while they can. It is very obvious that the people were scared because they kept telling them to "make her shut up".
Simon Wiesenthal, a Jewish Austrian Holocaust survivor, tells of his story about the decision of forgiveness in his book the Sunflower. Wiesenthal had the experience of being picked to listen to the confession of an SS officer just because he was a Jew. The SS officer, named Karl, told Wiesenthal on his deathbed of his horrible crime of murdering a Jewish family of three. As Karl made his confession he asked for the forgiveness of Weisenthal for his crime. Weisenthal ends up not granting the dying man’s last wish and let's Karl die in misery and not peace because of his crimes to the Jews.

Mary takes her hatchet and places the edge of the blade on Mary’s neck: I believe, that thou proclaimed your service to me? After going against me in court? After making a fool out of me in front of the village? Shouting Only to come crying back to me after seeing my capabilities and intentions?
She says in a letter that “it was a dream come true” (Alexie 100). Mary is finally content with her life, happy that she is no longer living in her parents’ basement being miserable. Although, this doesn’t last long for her. Mary dies, right after she starts regaining her hope and was untroubled for once in her life. This illustrates the loss of opportunities and dreams that everyone in the reservation has to deal with on a daily basis, therefore, is why this community does not believe in having hope.
When reading the short book I was actually surprised that a dying Nazi soldier is willing to come up and confess about his sins to the person who he and his people are murdering. And for that young dying Nazi soldier it must of been hard for him to tell the young Jewish boy all his sins about everything that happened to him, such as his family, his work and everything he done of which he sinned for. Asking for forgiveness is a hard thing and to do it to someone who your leader or your governor hate is harder because it is something unusual that is illegal. But even if you do ask for forgiveness, do you think in your mind are they ever gonna accept that forgiveness and hold out their hand and tell you “I forgive you even when your sins are committed
Although he was a foreigner, he still had a measure of power of which he would gladly use to help if she were to open and give him hope. One thing he could do would be to lessen her sentence. He could spread lies that she wasn’t guilty to help her leave prison sooner than the Nazis would ordinarily do so. However, he could also easily let her catch a glimpse or even just say a couple words to her family or friends. She would have hope from any glimpse of her loved ones.

She had to have worried that Joseph could divorce her or even worse, be stoned. However, she had great belief and confidence in God and she was a willing servant. Mary felt great honor for having the privilege of being the mother of the Messiah, Jesus Christ, the Savior of the world. Although being Jesus’s mother would bring her great honor, it was also bring her much suffering. Not only would she suffer the pain from child birth, but also the disgrace as an unwed mother.
