Epics are stories about heroic feats that usually illustrate society’s idealistic qualities such as bravery and loyalty. The poem Beowulf has outlasted the trials of time and has become a classic epic. Considering the story Beowulf was originally told orally, no one today knows the primordial author. Whoever the author was, he would demonstrate the idealistic warrior in these primitive times through his writings. Not only does he reveal the ideals of society, but he also shows complex topics such as the passing away of society and loyalty of friends. There are numerous topics on which this brilliant author touches but one sticks out. The epic poem Beowulf deals with the vast moral struggle between good and evil with topics of heroic feats against evil monsters, protecting ones friends and family or taking revenge for a lost loved one, and internal conflicts such as being heroic or cowardly. At the beginning of the poem the man eating monster known as Grendel is introduced to readers. He is viewed as the main villain or evil of the story. The author tells how “He was spawned in that slime, conceived by a pair of those monsters born of Cain, murderous creatures...” [Lines 19-21]. Grendel has an unquenchable thirst for human blood, and none of the Danes can seem to …show more content…
No person is truly one or the other. One of the main conflicts in Beowulf was one's internal struggle. Many choose to run in cowardly fear when faced with danger. Others attempt to help such as Wulfgar when he tells his comrades “We must go to him while angry flames burn at his flesh, help our glorious king” [Lines 778-780]. When faced with such danger, many warriors turn to cowards, yet Wulfgar continues to fight for his king. The warrior race began to dwindle “You're the last of all our far-flung family. Fate has swept our race away” [Lines 821-822]. Beowulf realizes that many men are pusillanimous and there are few true warriors
He is portrayed in the poem as a horrendous beast with human characteristics, but looking closer to the text, he is a human out-casted and raised to be a monster. Although Grendel is written as a monstrous villain who kills with no remorse, he is actually a complex human with a repressed anger exploding in bursts. Grendel is often described in a negative way. He is reffered to as a demon in the text “from Beowulf”
Beowulf was not the only one who showed bravery. Wiglaf did as well and he ultimately saved and helped Beowulf slay the dragons while all the other danes left him and ran away like cowards. . All the outcast sought vengeance and ended up being destroyed by the infamous
Grendel is showing off his power to make sure the Danes know he is powerful and dangerous. The unknown author says, "Till the monster stirred, that demon, that
His only desire was to be accepted by the humans. While he is depicted as a monster, he is just someone who wants to be accepted and acknowledged. Humans used ideas of heroism and appearance to make the world as what they wanted it to be, and because of these ideas, Grendel did not fit the mold and is
The hero in the epic poem Beowulf is the main character, Beowulf. He demonstrates heroic qualities as soon as the readers are introduced to his character. Beowulf proves himself to be courageous and brave by voluntarily fighting the “undefeatable” monster, Grendel. He is greatly admired by both the Danes and Geats for his courageous acts. Although his motivation is altered to only benefit himself with the title of the greatest warrior, his plan to save the Danes is greatly appreciated by all in the land.
Both authors paint a grotesque picture of their creations and how they both desire to destroy beauty; Aesthetic Iconoclasm, that is shared between the two figures. However, both authors present their monsters separate to one another in philosophy; with Grendel being a mindless savage and the Monster being more contemplative and questioning the nature of its own creation. ‘Monster’ characters have always been a target of both folk tales and pagan myths since the dawn of humanity, the very concept of a monstrous creature harkens back to the primal fear instinct of facing a dangerous predator that presents a danger to humanity. Grendel from Beowulf is the perfect example of this hysteria and
Beowulf is a poem that based in the 10th and 11th century that revolved around the idea of good vs evil. The poem is named after Beowulf who is a supernatural hero that slays any evil that crosses his path but is a real sweetheart when it comes to other people or the king. Typically in an epic poem, one will see a character or “the hero” who has outstanding courage and commit superhuman deeds and show values to other people in that era. “Then he drew himself up beside his shield./The fabled warrior in his warshirt and helmet/trusted in his own strength entirely/
You could say Beowulf was kind of a calm berserker. The Danes need help with Grendel, here comes our hero Beowulf from the Geats. Grendel is terrorizing the beloved mead-hall called Heorot. Beowulf comes with not only bravery, but a lot of strength and perseverance.
Beowulf attempted to comfort Hrothgar and the warriors by exclaiming, “Let your sorrow end! It is better for us all to avenge our friends, not mourn them forever”. He then aims to convince Hrothgar that “for the glory of his name, fame after death is the noblest of goals”. Beowulf believes it is worth dying for a good
As king, Beowulf stepped up and fought the malevolent dragon in his last battle. In his last boast he uttered, “ I’ve never known fear, as a youth, I fought endless battles. I am old, now, but I will fight again, seek fame still, if the dragon hiding in his tower dares to face me.” (62). Beowulf was very confident for the circumstances.
Alexander Hamilton once said, “There is a certain Enthusiasm in liberty that makes Human nature rise above itself, in acts of bravery and heroism.” Beowulf is an epic poem in which the main character Beowulf did acts of service, but he fought for those who couldn’t fight. The overall theme of good versus evil in Beowulf had Beowulf dealing with challenges that no ordinary man would be able to handle unless they were a true epic hero. Throughout the poem Beowulf proves to be an epic hero by his strength, bravery, and sacrifice.
Christopher Reeves once said, “A hero is an ordinary individual who finds the strength to persevere and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles.” Although Beowulf was human, he was not an ordinary individual, hero, or king, for he was a man who displayed superhuman qualities in his efforts to protect the Danish and Geatish people. Beowulf, who was established Geatish warrior that spent his life in battle, showed these extraordinary characteristics that made him an epic hero, one who possesses superhuman, almost god-like qualities. Being constantly on a quest, risking his life for glory and the greater good of society, and being superiorly intelligent, courageous and strong are the three most important reasons why Beowulf deserves such a notable
This reinforces the idea that Grendel’s mother is also a monster, since put in the same position as the prior one. The two monsters, Grendel and his mother are also associated with the night as a time for action. This reinforces their animal-like behavior, and the monstrosity of their actions because they are not giving fair warning to the humans. The monstrosity of Grendel is also seen through his savagery when killing the men. He is carnivorous and feeds on human flesh.
Accompanying Beowulf is a book told from the monster's perspective titled Grendel by John Gardner. A consistent theme throughout Beowulf and Grendel is the utilization of the heroic code, which strongly values courage, loyalty, honor and strength - all of which Beowulf demonstrates in his
The epic poem Beowulf is a classic tale of good versus evil. Good, as shown in the story, is any action that fights evil and defends the community and the people of it. The evil intent of Grendel, the story’s antagonist and cannibalistic murderer, who is depicted as a “fiend out of hell” (99), is strongly countered by the heroic actions of the stories main protagonist, Beowulf. The noble King Hrothgar is a role model for young Beowulf at the beginning of the epic, displaying acts of charity and wisdom throughout his life.
