Throughout history, many incredible civilizations have risen and fallen. Among them was Ancient Rome. The Roman Republic started in Italy in around 800 BC, and became a grand and powerful civilization. It was ruled by the people and they voted for leaders. Ancient Rome would go on to dominate much of the Mediterranean. Although the Roman Republic was a magnificent place, it didn’t always meet the common good. In order to meet the common good, a few things it would have to do are provide public services, promote the rule of law, and prepare for a common defense. Overall, the Roman Republic somewhat met the common good. When it came to preparing for a common defense, the Roman Republic met most needs. If it were graded on this, it would have …show more content…
At this they would have received a C+ because of the aqueducts, roads, and gladiator fights. The Roman aqueduct system was a series of pipes that ran down from the mountains and provided the Roman Republic with running water and indoor plumbing. The only people who were not positively affected by this were the people forced to build the aqueducts, the Legions, slaves, and laborers. If the army was building a new fort or colony, Rome was not responsible for supplying it with water. The soldiers had to build aqueducts themselves. Another thing Rome did to try to meet the common good was create roads. At first, the only roads in Rome were grass and mud paths, which were slow and unsafe to travel on. The Roman Republic knew they would need new roads so that they could get to military situations quickly. The new roads were made of stone and mud. There were ditches on either side for drainage so they were safer in bad weather. Finally, the Roman Republic had gladiator fights. These definitely did not meet the common good. Slaves and animals were forced to fight, and in every show around half of the fighters died. This provided entertainment for the Romans, but was not meeting the common good. The Romans did well with aqueducts and roads, but they should have had safer and less violent …show more content…
The Romans were fairly good at this, and earned a B-. This is because of their specific laws that addressed many situations. For example, Table 1 in the Twelve Tables, the written Roman laws, states that if you are summoned to court, you must go by law. This law protected others in the trials because people important in their case couldn’t choose to ignore them. If someone was unable to come to the trial because they were sick or elderly, a form of transportation would be sent to them so that they could come. The Romans wanted everyone called upon to be able to come to the trial so that they could not be accused of being unfair. One thing the Romans did poorly when promoting the rule of law was treating everyone equally. There were specific laws for people like women and slaves who were restricted by the Twelve Tables. This was one weakness among the strengths of the Romans as they promoted the rule of law. The Roman Republic did a moderate job meeting the common good, but there were several areas that could have used improvement. They should have treated their Auxiliary soldiers fairly, and made sure that their laws treated everyone equally. The Roman Republic also should have had safer entertainment that didn’t force people to fight to the death. Although Ancient Romans didn’t do everything in their power to meet the common good, they still became a very powerful empire and controlled
At the beginning of the first millennium CE, the Roman Empire began to conquer the territory around the Mediterranean Sea. Smaller countries feared the Roman Empire because of their great strength. The Roman Empire acquired great wealth, territories, and a reputation as a strong and feared empire. But, as time passed the problems within the Empire accumulated and the state of Roman Empire began to deteriorate before collapsing in 476 CE.
America is very similar to Ancient Rome, but there are several differences. For example, the Roman Empire "fell" and America is still “standing”. Before ancient Rome “fell”, Rome started out as a small settlement of farmers on the Palatine hill. About one hundred years later, Rome became a republic. The Roman Empire started when Pax Romana or Roman peace began in 27 BCE under the rule of Augustus Caesar.
INTRODUCTION: According to (National Geographic Society, 2022). As the final Etruscan king of Rome was deposed, the Roman Republic was established in 509 BCE. With two representatives chosen by legislative assemblies to preside over the Roman Senate and lead the Roman military, the Roman government functioned as a representative democracy in the form of a republic. Nevertheless, the Roman Republic never aspired to be a direct democracy; instead, it had a fused government that combined elements of "kingship," "aristocracy," and democracy.
Rome was a very powerful empire, but eventually fell because of one thing, weak political leadership. Weak political leadership was the main reason why Rome fell and it was more of a chain because when there is bad leadership then there is bad military and more invaders. The invasions got more effective and hurt the empire a lot more than it should have at that time. First of all Rome went from a republic to a empire with all the power and rights from the people slowly slipping away to the all powerful emperors at the end. Emperors did not want to share any power with the people which was very bad because they only paid attention to power, for example how Julius Caesar get kill/assassinated on March 15, 44 BCE in Rome, Italy.
Most of the ideas and structures of their government became the basis for modern civilizations. The Roman Republic had a lot of leaders with the main ones being Julius Caesar and Caesar Augustus, that helped them govern the civilization. The highest positions in the Roman government were the two consuls, who ruled the Roman Republic. Ancient Rome was also known for telling everyone that they were republican people, not ruled by kings, but by people themselves. War Tactics
The Roman Republic was founded in 509 BC and lasted for nearly 500 years. During this time, Rome became a dominant power in the Mediterranean region, establishing a vast empire that lasted for centuries. However, the Republic itself was beset by internal conflicts, corruption, and a breakdown of the political system that eventually led to its downfall. One of the key factors that contributed to the Republic's decline was the breakdown of the political system. The Roman Republic was initially designed to provide a balance of power among different branches of government, including the Senate, the magistrates, and the people's assemblies.
Although one of their best ideas was known as the type of government they established what is now known as the republic, and since then it has been copied by other places, the united states uses and has similarity to roman republic. The U.S government is based partly on the model of Rome’s. the parts and similarity’s that we still use today are things like citizenship, legal code, legislative branch /senate, and others. The republic all started when the romans finally overthrew the Etruscan conquerors they had around (509 B.C.E) once they were free the romans came up or established the republic, a government were the citizens picked a representative to rule on their behalf. The concept of Citizenship in Rome was that males of ages 15 or older, that came from original tribes or places of Rome became citizens.
Romans were also not beasts for not participating in government unlike the Athenians who punished them. In document D it also states that they were “ ranked into distinct classes” which shows that they were put together and had their priorities straight. In document F it states “ senate had full governing power in Rome” which is better than in Athens where everyone kinda ruled, Rome was more of a democracy. This evidence all helps to show that Rome was better when it came to citizenship because they were more thought out and not all
This law was exclusively made for Roman citizens and was derived from custom and legislation. Eventually, Rome developed its main legal code called the jus gentium (law of nations), which applied not only to Roman citizens, but also to foreigners within the borders of Rome. This system of laws was not founded through legislation, but was enacted by magistrates as a flexible alternative to the jus civile. These system of laws impacted the Roman Empire by establishing order and having flexible restrictions for all people entering or living in Rome.
Rome was the center of one of the world's greatest empires. It began as an unremarkable settlement. Rome had become powerful by conquering territory. But Rome soon discovered that size has its problems. Controlling an expanded empire, meant a need for more food, clothing, weapons and supplies.
The Roman Republic greatly influence the many forms of government that came after it, its many contributions to government significantly impacted modern day governments of today. Yet to understand it we must first find knowledge to how the Roman Republic came to be. The answer is fairly simple, due to the harsh rule of the Etruscan they were kicked out of Rome and the Romans formed the Rome Republic. Yet, the Rome Republic developed over time, it when through refinements as time passed. Such things as the Senate, magistrates, tripartite, checks and balances are some of the examples that the Roman Republic influenced on modern U.S. government.
From a simple city/state to two vast empires ruled by powerful dictators. As you (hopefully) know, Rome in its infancy was just a small village on the river Tiber. After Rome grew a bit it became more akin to that of a city/state, its central governing city still being Rome. The next key phase in the evolution of the government of Rome was the Roman monarchy. This phase is characterized by its monarch rulers and, has little known of it as few records exist dating back to that era.
Octavian, who would later be known as Augustus, was the adopted grandnephew of Julius Caesar. After Julius Caesar’s death, Octavian would join with two other rulers named Mark Antony and Lepidus. Together they would become the second triumvirate or group of three rulers. Jealousy took over, and Octavian was the final ruler left of the three. Octavian changed his name to Augustus and became the new emperor of Rome.
Tiberius and Gaius strived to better Rome as a whole, which separated themselves from the rest of the
There has always been a discussion on whether Julius Caesar was a hero or a tyrant, “Killing Caesar” by Jon Herman gives the readers a reason why he is such of a hero in some eyes and a tyrant in others. To answer that Julius Caesar was a hero. During Julius Caesar’s reign he made life in Rome higher quality than it was before. In the article “Killing Caesar” it says, “For the average Roman, Caesar’s rule was a blessing. ”This must mean that the type of government Rome had was dreadful.
