The Role Of Education In The 1920's

When you are young, the world is supposed to be a beautiful place. It should be inspiring; allowing you to believe you can do anything, as long as you are willing to do the work. Schools are supposed to be the initial place you start to grow. Schools are were your mind is shaped, the place where you began to understand a lot of things, educators were willing to teach you and help build you up ; encouraging you to stay focus, wanting you to continue following your dreams. Nowadays, it seems as though children’s dreams and aspirations are fading.

Nearly 30 years later, the characteristics of the 1920s are present in repeating economic, political, and even social circumstances in the 1950s. Many portions of American history were transformed throughout these two memorable time periods, as the saying "history repeats itself" states. Looking back on the flourishing 1920s, many were relieved that the war was over and that life could return to normal. What happened in the 1950s was no different. The postwar prosperity and civil rights movement are the most widely recognized periods of these times.

This was important because it gave education opportunities to people of all social classes, such as farmers and people of the working class, and not just the wealthy.

Introduction The Declaration of Independence of 1776 asserted that all men are created equal and are endowed with certain unalienable rights among which are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. However, the exhaustion of farm land by poor agricultural planning and the introduction of the assembly line reversed the flow in the 1920s. They helped to turn the migration of the people back to the city. Many farmers returned to the cities to work for such leaders of industry as Ford and Rockefeller. The American Dream indicated not about a better life but about wealth.

The Progressive Era from the 1890s to 1920s was a period that experienced extensive social activism and political reforms across the United States. This movement was spurred by the heightened level of corruption and injustice of large corporations and in government at that time. The movement primarily comprised of “liberals who wanted to reform and regulate their capitalist society and not destroy it. " There were several pushes to make the political process more open and transparent. One of which was the adaptation of the direct primary elections and to grant the Presidents more powers to regulate new laws.

Education Reform There is no doubt that education has revolutionized the world. However, at one point in time, education was seen to be only for the rich and not a necessity to all like it is today. Receiving an education in the early 1800’s was not important in the grand scheme of things because the poor children were expected to work on farms or in factories to provide for their families. Therefore, since many Americans did not believe education was valuable, it took a great reform powered by one man to reveal the significance of schooling; this individual was Horace Mann. Self-taught and self-motivated, Horace Mann desired to gain as much knowledge as he could, and additionally he wished to influence others’ lives in a positive way by creating

In stark contrast to the prosperity of the 1920s, the Great Depression affected every industrialised country from 1929 to 1929. Under Republican administration, laissez faire capitalism incited the emergence of fundamental flaws within the manufacturing sector, as well as high tariffs. These policies ultimately precipitated extreme disparities in wealth and civil liberties. Although such policies were major causative factors in this era, they cannot be identified as the sole cause of the Depression.

Not long after the civil war, America had been launched into a whole new era of industrialization. Between the War and Gilded Age, a new wave of flowed in stirring the nation into an uproar. African Americans were still finding their place in society after the institution of slavery had been removed, and education, an idea that had not been prominent in the minds of many, was on the rise. Old World countries faced a huge growth in population, leaving almost no room for many citizens to live.

The public schools’ content, discipline, and amount of religiosity differed due to the early influences, general demographics, and the three sections. All states in America had free public schools by 1870, but attendance was not completely mandatory. Into the twentieth century, as it became a known fact that the more educated a person was, the more productive they could be, laws were established that required all foreigners to be americanized so that American education was able to expand and be unified as one

America experienced a sudden disregard of Victorian values following World War I, causing the generation of the 1920s to dramatically contrast the previous. This severe degree of change produced three major manifestations of the contradictions in the twenties. There were massive conflicts to the Jazz Age, technological advancements, and Black Migration. The contradictions of the 1920s reflect America’s conflicted state between advancement and convention, as the cultural and technological developments of the era coincide with the inability of individuals to stray from traditional norms and racist attitudes.

The 1920s carried much change in society. Some of these changes were more rights for women, jazz music, and prohibition. The people of the 1920s were disillusioned by society lacking in idealism and vision, sense of personal alienation, and Americans were obsessed with materialism and outmoded moral values (The Roaring Twenties).Cultural changes were strongly influenced by the destruction of World War I ending 1918. America needed to recover and with it youth rebelled against the norms of the older generations.

The 1920s were the first years of the new, modern America, with a growing consumer society and new ideas and rules. America saw many changes throughout this decade, including but not limited to social, economic and political changes. Throughout this time, new values were made with the growth of new forms of entertainment and education. After the Progressive Era, the ideas of political figures changed with a new focus on conservative politics and less labor issues. With the new ability for people to buy other products than basic needs, their money went to new inventions, causing new industries to grow.

The growth of high schools In the early 1900 science, civics, and social studies courses were added to public schools. New Vocational courses prepared boys for industrial jobs in drafting, carpentry, and mechanics. New vocational courses prepared girls for office work.

So I watch this video on you tube that raises the question what is education. It raises another question what is higher education, and went on to talk about the changes in college education from 1920 to current day. College then was four year course and classes where worth 3 credits. The courses were not vocational unlike now. In 1920 only 2 percent were able to attend college if they choose to.

The 1920s in America, also known as the Roaring Twenties, was a time of political, social, economic, technological, and cultural developments. These developments created new changes and helped shape the ways of life of the American people. Women played a significant example in social changes. From improvements in the education system, to minor developments such as the changes in attire. Another major development was economic production.
