The Role Of African Americans In The Vietnam War

In the nineteen-forties there was a terrible war raging on, with many dead, and others wounded. Little did America know, there was another war, a silent war, a war of opportunities and understanding. During the war years, morale was low and Americans were afraid to go to war, however; the Double V campaign encouraged Americans to fight for democracy and victory abroad and at home. Unfortunately, it didn 't include all Americans. African-Americans had been fighting for their own freedom for many years, but now, they wanted to fight for their country and were denied,“For surely those who perpetrate these ugly prejudices here are seeking to destroy our democratic form of government just as surely as the Axis forces.”

With the Soviet Union threat rising, desegregation of the armed forces may have seemed an unnecessary distraction with concern that racial friction between soldiers in theoretical “desegregated” units would reduce army efficiency. However, these opinions fail to factor the large scale African American boycott of the military, making desegregation a decision in the interest of a more effective use of manpower in the armed forces. Once issued, the order’s indisputable, positive effects were felt politically, socially, and economically. The Executive order immediately subdued the African American boycott threats, ensuring the military and economic stability America needed in light of the Soviet threat. Though the military was not fully desegregated until 1954, merely issuing the order impacted the political stage greatly, giving civil rights movements a new sense of belief in non-violent protesting, thus inspiring many new humanitarian reforms.

African Americans were extremely influential in Wworld Wwar II. One of the main groups that played a huge role in the success of the war was known as the Rred Ttails or the 332nd. They were the most decorated of all African American air force groups. The red tails were also given recognition throughout the military and on the homefront for their success. African Americans played the biggest role out of all minorities in world war II and were impacted the most from this war, the pilots referred to as the red tails played a huge role in the take down of the Nazis.

However, in great contradiction to our country's founding sentiments (“all men are created equal”), we entered this war whilst violating key democratic principles. African Americans had an extremely pivotal role in the outcome and consequences of the Civil War. This group of people were enslaved, and forced to work in horrible conditions, for the whole day, without pay. Slaves were one of the main causes of the Civil War. The issue of Slavery, which resulted in the eventual economic and social division between the North and South, caused the creation of the Confederate States. African Americans did not only unintentionally cause the war, but they also effected the outcome of the war, and the eventual consequences the nation would face after the war.

The Vietnam War was a war the United States should have never been involved in. The “Domino Theory” was a direct cause of the war. The war resulted in much death; innocent civilians and young Americans were killed. The Vietnam war also resulted in rioting, distrust for the United States government, and the loss of many lives. 58,000 Americans were killed and 300,000 were wounded.

Slaves and free blacks battled for the Continentals and for the British amid the Revolutionary War. At Monmouth, African Americans confronted each other. That fight did not make a difference much, nor, toward the finish of the war, did it much make a difference for which side blacks carried weapons, in any event as it concerned their flexibility. The Civil War that stretched across America from 1861 to 1865 activated the violent decades of the division between the North and South regions. Economically and Politically different, the North heavily depended on free labor and industrial economy, whereas the South revolved around and agricultural economy that benefited from slave labor. These differencing opinions that developed throughout the Civil War had a deep impact on the divide in American during Reconstruction. After the Civil War ended there was a million questions as to what to do with all the recently freed slaves. There were an abundant of opposing ideas as to how to treat these newly freed slaves and the loosing white southerners of the Confederacy.

Post Civil War, African Americans started to gain rights to gain rights, and soon gain rights equal to whites. While there were some people/things standing in their way (KKK, Black Codes), in the end they got what they needed; Equality. Many acts and laws were passed to aid the new rights now held by African Americans, as well as the numerous people willing to help. New Amendments were added to give African Americans rights after the war, all giving them some equal rights to whites. The first of the three added was the Thirteenth Amendment, it gave African Americans freedom from slave owners, and stated that no one could be kept as a slave in the U.S..

The military’s goal in this assignment was to show the American people and potential African American soldiers that African American soldiers were now treated equally. There was a stigma regarding the maltreatment of African Americans in the military, and with the passing of the Civil Rights Bill of 1964, the image of the African American soldier began to quickly change. The new breed of African American soldiers no longer tolerated bigotry and hatred. African American soldiers began uniting to combat the injustices in America as well as within the military overseas.

In the years of the Civil War, African Americans played an important role in contributing to the Union Army and the confederate army. A great deal of African American men volunteered to join the Union Army but only after they gained freedom did they participate in fighting the war. Besides the Union Army, there was the confederate army which consisted of slave labor whom were forced to aid the confederacy following their masters. Later in the war, the Confederacy ran short on men and were in need to supply soldiers, leaving no choice but to enlist the colored men. Not only were African American men impacted from the war, but African American women also served to supply and aid in the war.

On April 4, 1967 Doctor Martin Luther King Jr gave the speech, “Beyond Vietnam-A time to Break Silence.” In this powerful speech Dr. King addresses his followers, and explains why the same people who are advocating for civil rights, should also protest the war in Vietnam. Dr. King’s main appeal is towards pathos because he is explaining his reasons, most of which are moral in some way. Dr. King develops the central claim of the speech by explaining how the war is taking away resources from the poor, how the soldiers are disproportionately poor people, and lastly how the war is completely against his morals. His central claim of the speech revolves around war being an enemy of the poor.
