Journal 1 A: Homer has a very unique method of beginning the Odyssey. He starts the book in the action. After we hear about Odysseus's situation in the first passages Homer starts to focus on Odysseus's son, Telemachus. Telemachus is coming the age where he will take over his fathers role as household master that he left unfilled approximately twenty years ago. He is already showing signs of maturity when he ordered the suitors to leave and eventually got them legally ejected.

The poet uses imagery, diction, symbolism, and other figurative language devices throughout the poem to convey the dark mood and deeper meaning of history and death in the poem. The poem begins with a beautiful scene of the vast mountains and a hawk flying through it.

Throughout the poem the tone was subtle, however, a claim was still made. Because the speaker in the poem had a calm tone, it left me feeling a sense of displacement. I didn’t know whether the author chose to write this poem because it was something he was passionate about, or if it didn’t have sufficient meaning. With Hawthorne having ancestors of seamen, his poem could have been a representation of their lives. To me, this poem was quite relatable in the sense that there can be so much commotion above the water, but once you sink down, all is at peace.

The main focus of the poem was the unexpected visit of a raven to the narrator-s house. The bird serves as a constant reminder to the narrator of the death of his true love and the sadness that it brings him. It is left unclear if the bird literally came to his doorstep or the narrator was making it up. Some might say the raven was real because of how the narrator described it, from its color to its feathers. A raven is also a very common animal, so they might think it could still happen.
