•Parliament issued the first internal tax imposed directly on American colonists by the british government. It levied a tax on all printed paper in the colonies. Britain thought that it was a ongoing tax, that would be spread throughout the colonies. Colonist disagreed and it arose one of the most powerful demographic groups to oppose Britain. Colonists burned the Chancellor of the Exchequer and promised to hang him if he ever visited the colonies again.

This act required that many documents such as licenses, diplomas, contracts and even playing cards to be printed on embossed paper that had a tax on it. This act was the very first attempt to tax the colonists directly for activities that occurred solely with the colonies themselves. After the French and Indian War the British national debt skyrocketed and the Prime Minister was eager to pay it down before the government was bankrupted.

The British felt it was the right way to get out of the debt from ongoing wars with French. Several acts such as the Sugar Act and Stamp act were levied to because they felt america should “pay” since they received benefits from the victory,but the acts didn 't last and then were later repealed. In reprisal of the taxes the colonies produced a showdown known as The Boston Tea Party. A group of american colonists disguised as Native Americans threw over 300 trunks cargo from the british tea ships into the boston harbor. This resulted in the Quartering Act which required american colonists to provide food and housing for British soldiers at the colonies’ expense.

After the French and Indian War, Britain was in debt. King George III decided it was a grand idea to tax the colonies to help repay his debt. He implemented several different Acts on the colonies. The Sugar Act, in 1764, was the first form of taxation and it wasn’t just on sugar. This brought about the first saying of “No taxation without representation”.

It all started in 1756, the the beginning of the Seven Years War. For seven years Britain and France fought each other. By the time that England won in 1763, it was bankrupt. Because of Britain’s bankrupt-ness they enacted taxes and acts on the American colonies without their representation. Among the the taxes were the Sugar tax, which taxed sugar and molasses, the Stamp act, which taxed paper documents, and the the Tea act, which taxed tea.

What Caused the American Revolution The American Revolution was a battle for leadership in the American colonies. At the time, England controlled nearly all aspects, mostly the political and economic, of the colonial lives. Their purpose was to strengthen England. The colonies wanted the freedom from all of the control because they were doing fine without England.

A major social cause of the American Revolution was when the Revolutionaries tried to control who was running the government because they felt as though their means were not being met. For instance, when the liberalist tried to move the localist out of power. In the reading, “Democracy and the Constitution” by Gordon S. Wood, he states, “The Progressive period, for example, was marked by the reforming efforts of cosmopolitan type…to wrestle the reins of the government out of the hands of “corrupt” and “undesirable” localist elements.” Here, it shows that the Revolutionaries are trying to change the government and who is a part of the government.

The American Revolution was started in 1765 when British parliament decided to place a law on stamps known as the Stamp Act. For instance this made them have to pay for letters and for publishing newspaper, they also had to buy special paper too. What was the stamp act about?
