Ethan Frome: A Series Of Questions About Morals “I had the story, bit by bit, from various people, and, as generally happens in such cases, each time it was a different story.” (Wharton, 1911, p. 1.) The above quote is the very first sentence in the novel Ethan Frome, and although it has fewer than 30 words, it manages to hook the reader into a confusing situation. Ethan Frome began development in the early 1900s by the American writer Edith Wharton as an assignment to her instructor in French conversation. Edith based the narrative on several months of stay at her family's country home in Massachusetts.

His style of writing was so unique that even students today, like me, are still studying his great work. One of Carvers most glorious work is “Cathedral” which is the art piece I will be analyzing. “Cathedral” at first portrays a very unpleasant vibe; it included a very racist, close-minded, and unloving husband. However, the reason this story fascinated me was mostly because of the meaningful twist at the very end. “Cathedral” had many elements to it that were distinctive much like Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s “The handsomest Droned Man in the World.”

This drawling servs as an ironic metaphor all throughout the short story. When reading the story of cathedral, it has taught me never to judge a book by its cover. It has also taught me that people with disabilities can help others see outside of their comfort zone. We as human beings

This thesis is supported by two key elements of the story: the narrator's emotional state and the description of the cathedral. The narrator in "Cathedrals" is depicted as a lonely and isolated individual who is struggling to find meaning and purpose in life. Throughout the story, he is described as feeling disconnected from his wife and from the world around him. This emotional state is reflected in his descriptions of the cathedral, which serve as a metaphor for his internal struggles.

I know that the story is very close to wrapping up at this point because finishing the tunnel is one of the main focuses in the story, and when a main focus in a story is resolved, you know the book is coming to an end. The problem of the entire story is solved when Gerta, Fritz, Gerta’s mother, Anna, Anna’s mother and father, and lastly the wife of Muller, (I know, it’s a long story, I guess you’ll have to read the book!) escape to the West side of the wall. This is the resolution to the story because, like I said before, it is mainly the only thing that Gerta talks about any more to Fritz, and her mother. And in addition, it seems like Gerta is as happy as can be when they all escape to the other side of the wall. The theme of this story is definitely gaining freedom.

He realizes how smart Robert is, and he keeps being shocked as the night goes on. While listening to a show about Cathedrals, Robert asks the narrator to describe him a Cathedral. The narrator tries his hardest, but can not do it. To combat this, Robert takes the narrator's hand and has him close his eyes and together they draw the church just from memory. After drawing the Cathedrals, the narrator describes the picture as, “ It’s really something” (103).He learns how seeing is not everything in life, and how wrong he was with his assumptions about Robert.

From 500 to 1500 AD Europe was not in a dark age, because of their advances with the Gothic Cathedrals, their conquests in the Crusades, and their organization within their Government. During 1163 through 1345 Europe had many architectural advancements, such as the Gothic Cathedral and the Notre Dame. According to the Gothic Cathedral document in Universities and Cathedrals it states,”Common features of gothic cathedrals included architectural innovations, including: large columns, high ceilings with ribbed vaults, flying buttresses, and large stained glass windows.” This quote supports that Europe was not in a dark age because it shows how many architectural innovations were made during this time period.

A Cathedral is a place for people to go and worship, to connect with God. By drawing the Cathedral the narrator is in some ways also making a connection. For the first time, he appears to be able to see. The narrator's ignorance and preconceptions fade away because he sees that although Robert has the gift of knowing and understanding people. There is also a sense of irony at the end of the story.

In conclusion, the author uses many type of sentences and punctuations to make the story more interesting. The theme of the story is that it was a suspenseful one. It is important to the readers because it informs and entertains them with an impending threatening story. It is also important because it gives so much detail about what happened in the sequence of the main

Raymond Carver is said to be one the most influential American writers and poets in the 20th century, especially in his works of short stories. One of his most famous pieces is “Cathedral.” This well-known short story is the final piece in Carver’s collection Cathedral published in 1983. Carver includes much symbolism through the story’s plot, structure, point of view, tone, and character build. The depictions of each character’s experiences, the irony in the story, and hearing the narrator’s point of view in “Cathedral” work in harmony to support its themes that prejudice and ignorance as well as the nature of reality are present and change throughout the course of the story, and all lead to a strong character development by the close.

With this, readers could sense that the narrator is jealous, grouchy, and angry that Robert’s presence affects the narrator’s wife because of the connection between both the wife and Robert. The author prepares readers for the enlightenment when Robert came for a visit and that is how cathedral came about. The narrator explains, “The TV showed this one cathedral” (110). In this scene, the narrator and Robert bonded about the appearance of the cathedral. Instantly, the narrator says to Robert, “Do you have any idea what a cathedral is?

Narrated in the first person, Raymond Carver’s “Cathedral” is bound to unfold due to the thoughts and feelings of one of the main characters, the husband. Expectedly, the conflict revolves around him and the way he responds to the conflict leads

In “The Canterbury Tales” Chaucer illustrates the corruption of the church through the religious characters in both the tales and the prologue and their obsession with money. Illustrating the fact that medieval England, the church had a big impact on the lives of people due to them being able to “read” the bible. In many cases, this was uses to manipulate people into giving their money to church. Throughout the tales, people are shown to stand up to the church and beat them at their own game and this provides the ideal response to church corruption.

The narrator then proceeds to show Robert what a cathedral looks like by taking his hand and drawing a cathedral on “a shopping bag with onion skins in the the bottom of the bag.” (Carver 110) . Through this bricolage, the narrator closes his eyes and has an epiphany, for in this moment where his eyes are closed, hands intertwined, he truly sees, and “ ‘It’s really something,” (Carver 135). It’s the minimalistic approach that prefaces this big event that really showcases the theme. Carver’s use of colloquial language, in creation of an increasingly relatable scene allows for the reader to empathize with the narrator, allowing for a much stronger impact when the epiphany occurs and the story’s theme has been

As I stepped out of my car, I acknowledge that the church was surrounded by trees, which gave it a calming and peaceful sensation, the building was long with a triangular shaped form, with burgundy bricks surroundings and a bit of white in the front entrance and some at the very top and sides with a dark beige roofing to give the church some color, the windows seemed to be a tinted crystal glass that was designed with blues and a beige color. As I made my way into the church their was an entry room where a man and a women and what seemed to be their two children greeted me and handed me a pamphlet that described what was going to take place in that days Sunday school and mass, then I made my way to another pair of doors where I could hear the choir singing, as I opened the doors the inside of the church was a tan wood looking color all around and had matching tan benches with burgundy red bedding to match the carpet, the thing that stood out most to me when I walked in was the large cross that was in the very front that shined very bright as if the sun was hitting it to give the whole church light, when I looked below the cross, the choir was singing and beside it was a women playing a piano with so much passion and in front of them was a the pastors book stand also a matching tan color with his bible. The people were very kind as I sat down next to a friend that attends that church, they welcomed me with open arms and talked a bit about them self’s and the amount of time
