Bethany Hill once stated, “Every child you pass in the hall has a story that needs to be heard, maybe you are the one that needs to hear it.” That quote works because the person might have trouble at home and they might need a counselor to almost let a burden off of their shoulders and tell their story to. Some of the reasons Career Cruising chose being a school counselor for me because I like training and teaching, working with children and providing advice. I am most interested in pursuing a career as a school counselor because of its likeable working conditions, straightforward responsibilities and simple career preparations.

Some of the advantages of being a school counselor are, according to Ben, the challenges of working out problems with students. Ben also likes working with other people. For me personally, I think the challenge is a disadvantage, because when I am under pressure, I start to freak out. What I found surprising about A Day in the Life of a school counselor is that a person in that field actually teaches a class. Also what surprised me me was that school counselors do not have much time to be alone and think, they are always moving, as with any other teacher. I think that the best part of the job is getting to work with children all day. Even now, at the age of twelve, I like babysitting little kids. Some of the disadvantages of being a school counselor, according to Ben, feeling overwhelmed and working with students that want him to make the decision for them. Also facing the hard and emotional parts of life. For Alison, for a day in the life, sher works from 9am to 5pm. I think that is hard because depending how far away the school you work at is, and how long after the day ends a person in this position stays, they could get home right before dinner time. Even KHMS is almost half an hour away from my subdivision. The worst part, in my opinion, would be being on my feet all day if I were to pursue a career in this
My name is Ranee Xiong, and I am a Junior at the University of Minnesota, Morris. I am a Human Services major with a Sociology minor. For my final paper for this year, I have to interview a person within this field, and I am wondering if I could interview you for my final paper. While interviewing school counselor, Melissa Gomes from Friendship Southeast Elementary Public Charter School, I was able to obtain a lot of information pertaining to a school counselor’s profession. Although, I have acquired plenty of information about a school counselor occupation throughout the last year and half of attending Trinity, the interview was very beneficial and knowledgeable. Ms. Gomes gave great insight that allowed for a better understanding of a school counselors role. Ms. Gomes was kind enough to answer several different questions pertaining to her role and responsibilities as a school counselor. Then a school counselor could collaborate with all staff on how to acknowledge good behavior throughout the school. At tier two a school counselor would collect data on children with behavior problems and start individual or small group intervention counseling sessions. In addition at tier two a counselor could write behavioral contracts and collaborate with special education teachers and school psychologist as needed.

They are in the driver's seat and "lay the groundwork for a positive and trusting environment (Cobb). " The perceptions, expectations, and behaviors that teachers have can help sustain and improve school climate. School counselors can hold workshops and training sessions that allow collaboration amongst administrators, teachers, students, and parents as well as enhance student education opportunities. Students often go unrecognized when it comes to school problems; therefore, their voices need to be heard as it is "the most authentic means of advocating for social justice and promoting a positive school climate
A little over two years ago, I started working as a Community Support Individual for Pathways Transition Programs LLC. My primary responsibility is to teach children various coping skills to manage their behavior, I have determined that I want to be able to address the emotions behind the behaviors. My desire is to be able to help the children I work with come to terms with their past histories so they can move on in their lives towards adoption and other positive outcomes. Sometimes, the children are still going through issues such as, on-going traumas, the lost of a parent due to death or incarceration, etc and I would like to develop the skill set to be able to address these issues. I see pursuing my degree through Argosy University as being the next step to take in order to develop a competency in counseling.
The school based therapists and school psychologists at Fremont High have really helped me and assisted me is tough times and I would like to provide the same support for future students. Overall, becoming a school psychologist would allow me many opportunities to have positive effects on student’s lives by helping them overcome the effects of trauma, cope with mental illnesses, face a mental health crisis, or achieve personal goals that they might
With that being said, another counseling setting is college health services within a University and college setting. Before college mental health settings were founded, counseling psychologist provided therapy to students (Gladding & Newname, 2014, Pg. 380). A disadvantage with regard to the counseling response to student mental health concerns may be contingent to the size of the institution and the availability of the staff and resources. If hired at a larger university or college, you are usually better equipped to provide care for an array of development, emotional, and clinical issues, whereas smaller universities and colleges generally support the student facing clinical issues and working alongside clinical mental health agencies for more severe cases. On a positive note, the advantage to counseling at a university or college, the final focus is coaching.
People who are drug addicted can benefit greatly from spending time at a drug treatment center. The center can be just what they need to overcome their addiction and live a happier life without drugs. If you are addicted to drugs, treatment is likely a necessity as it can be hard to get off of drugs without the right treatment. What does it have to offer an addicted individual?
My career goal is to work as a high school counselor, but specifically I want to work with special education students. I would be enthusiastic however to work with any high school students on a professional level. I’ve always knew that my future would involve helping others, and when I was in high school I never had councilor I could talk to openly. My guidance counselor made it clear that she was only there for scheduling and nothing more. She told me when it came time to apply for college that I was wasting my time

Like other professions in the mental health field and helping professions, counseling typically attracts those who are imbued with a need to help others, to make a difference in others’ lives, the community around them and sometimes even the world. There are many facets to a counselor and to counseling, some of which take on personal attributes such as personality, the values and beliefs held by counselors, and what they perceive their role in the counseling profession to be. Other facets involve ethical considerations in therapy, the importance of the profession, the value and process of change, important counseling practices and the value of necessary self-care a counselor ought to engage in. The role of a counselor is to act as a conduit to change and wellbeing in a client.
Many jobs keep adults continually moving all over the country. Relocating to a new community is inconvenient for everyone in a family, but it is hardest on teenagers. Regularly moving from city to city, state to state does have adverse effects on young teenagers. Teenagers change schools frequently due to their parent 's jobs. Starting a new school every year or two is difficult for a teenager.
When I decided to train to become a professional school counselor, I knew I had a long road ahead. I am trained to be a teacher, a special education teacher to be specific, and though I will be able to use much of my past experience as a classroom teacher in my school counseling practice, I am aware that I will also need to see my students in a new way, a more holistic way. I will need to focus not only on what works in the classroom, but what works in order to motivate and support the students with whom I meet. It is essential for me to determine what will drive me, inspire me to be the best school counselor for both my school and students, therefore, I must determine my professional philosophy of education and school counseling and develop my beliefs, vision and mission statements.
I believe that clinical counseling was what I needed, but I feel it could have been beneficial and helpful to receive support and acknowledgment from the professional school counselors on staff at our school. I believe that even if you feel like you may not be prepared to help a student it is important to at least acknowledge and address a students concern. I did not feel that I had a safe place to go at school when things were difficult because no one took time to acknowledge that I was not in the best
