American Imperialism Imperialism by the book is the policy in which stronger nations extend their economic, political or military territories. The time period where the US exampled imperialism was very important for our country because the US was able to grow with the new territories that were gained and the economic gain from the new market that were acquired. The spread of American culture was also a big concept during this time in the countries history. The United States exhibited imperialism between 1890-1920 through military strength, new markets, and cultural superiority.

The United States Imperialism started in the late 19th century. There were several reasons that this era occurred such as, economic competition, military competition, and political motives. The first reason is economic competition this was one of the key reasons for the United States wanting to expand. The industrial revolution was a big contributor of the need for expansion this was needed so that we could have more area to produce equipment for our military. This was a really good thing because our military forces became much more advanced than our opponents and it is still true today that we have the strongest and spend the most money on our military.

This often results in a shift of power from one major force currently in control to another. The people of that nation under control conflict may also experience wars, rebellions, or cultural destruction. Looking at some of these events, we see some positives and negatives of imperialistic action taken by the United States, and how it affected the nations imperialized by the United States. For starters, let’s look at Hawaii’s annexation.

A Change to Imperialism After the civil war, Americans remained surprisingly aloof to the outside world. Because America was struggling with many problems over Reconstruction, such as trying to maintain a steady flow in the economy and settle the West, many Americans weren’t very concerned with foreign affairs. There was a drastic shift, however, that made America change from isolationism to imperialism in the early 20th century. America made this drastic shift because it wanted to expand and gain prestige, convert people into one’s own beliefs (missionary zeal), and indulge itself in foreign affairs to aid its economy and marketing. With the control of the Panama Canal, America was then able to obtain its worldwide power.

Seeming as if the United States was in a state of becoming the strongest and securest country at the time. The United States economy needed foreign markets to other words keep alive and progress as a country. Seemed like the federal government was under pressure to secure its power. Also be a prestige country in the world.

United States Imperialism in the late 19th century was very selfish time. Many people in that time, debated about whether are not benefiting our country was the right way or the wrong way. The motiving factors that impacted our imperialism are economic, military, and cultural. These factors impacted the American Imperialism from 1890-194 by having control over weaker territories meeting our expanding needs.

From the Colonial Period to WWII, the United States slowly began to pull away from isolationism and lean more towards the idea of imperialism. After World War II, isolationism came a complete halt in our nation and we see America begin to imperialize several different territories all over the world. As the U.S. makes this transition, there are multiple obvious changes throughout the nation, such as a growth of our economy, a feeling of cultural superiority, and a strengthening of our naval forces.

As Amerian expansion came to an end in 1870, imperialism was just getting started. It was a way to get economic advantages, strengthen the military, and increase the nationalism in our country. American expansion was a way to use the ideal of manifest destiny, where God wanted us to expand from east coast to west coast. Imperialism was different from expansionism because of the competition between countries. There was the threat to get on top during imperialism that wasn’t there during expansionism.

American imperialism is economically, socially, and politically damaging to countries, as well as costly for America. Furthermore, it infringes upon national sovereignty and the right to self-governance. Historical cases have shown the detrimental repercussions America has repeatedly caused. The few cases of success should not undermine the calamitous effects American neo-imperialism has caused. The United States should cede its colonies and stop intervening in the affairs of other nations.

It is a great way to strengthen the economy and gain power and territory for countries that practice it, though it often failed and resulted in war and the deaths of innocents. Four intellectuals that played a big part in influencing American imperialism were Frederick Jackson Turner, Alfred T. Mahan, Herbert Spencer and John Fisk. All of these influencers had different ideologies and came together to justify American imperialism. They believed America needed to expand power and gain territories.

Imperialism brought many ideas and inventions, but there were also adverse effects. Many attributes like racism, infrastructure, and war were used to gain more territory. Colonialism and Imperialism affected our world both positively and negatively. On one hand, Imperialism has often been linked with racial segregation, manipulation, and hardship. On the other, it has been said that many colonial powers contributed much in terms of schools, roads, railways, and much more. Whether this time period was constructive or harmful, it has played a large part in shaping our lives today. European Imperialism started long before the 1800’s.

In order to do this, we have to use our military to extend the power of the United States to new places. Mr. Twain wrongly believes that imperialism is wrong, but it has accomplished many things. The United States was able to end Spanish rule of Cuba and the Philippines. I was able to help Panama become a separate country from Columbia, which allowed us to have the Panama Cannel built. Doing this has more benefits than just expanding the power of the United States though.

Empires would look for expansion in their rule over other countries like Africa, Asia, and the Middle East starting in the 1870s and continued until 1914. But, was Imperialism beneficial for developing nations? Imperialism benefited developing nations from the positive aspects of technological advancements, economic gain, and political power.
