It is a source of power but also provides restrictions which protect the United States citizens. A convention was held which developed three branches of government and a checks and balances system. The Founding Fathers could not agree on the Virginia Plan or the New Jersey Plan, so they decided on the Great Compromise, which included portions of both plans.

Some might ask why is the constitution important to the United States? The United States relies on the constitution for a base. The constitution is what freed us from Great Britain. Where would our country be today if our founding fathers didn't create the constitution and didn't make this country freedom of speech and religion.
