Events were going as planed in the first year of the war. In the second year of the war, the battles’ results were too ugly due to the incompatibility between the new weapons and the old war tactics with no concrete signs of possible future improvement. Therefore, he issued the Emancipation Proclamation in September 1862, despite opposition even from some Northerners. Lincoln declared war for the sake of union. The civil war became a different war as the gleaming sun set over the bloody fields of Antietam. After the union had partially won the battle, Abraham Lincoln changed the war as he wrote one of the most controversial, and most crucial documents in American history: the Emancipation Proclamation (Dudley 166). Mr. Lincoln’s preliminary proclamation declared that on January 1, 1863, all slaves remaining in areas of the South “in rebellion would be declared then, thenceforward, and forever free” (Dudley 167). The Emancipation Proclamation paved the way to the abolition of slavery, and is by far one of the most important accomplishments made in history.

President Abraham Lincoln came across multiple issues during the Civil War and the Emancipation Proclamation. Some of the political issues had to deal with the border states. In the back of his mind, he mostly wanted to get rid of slavery, but the border states don’t want slavery to be abolished, and Lincoln knew this.
