Picture being so scared walking home alone that you had to carry a switchblade around. In The Outsiders Ponyboy, and his friends who are called the greasers, live in a violent, bad neighborhood without their parents. They are against a group called Socs who are a higher class, in a much better neighborhood and they jump the greasers all the time out of nowhere. The setting causes the characters to be tense and anxious, for example, Johnny and Darry who can never calm down and loosen up. They always have to look behind their back everywhere they go. To begin, the setting has a large affect on the characters in The Outsiders. For example, Ponyboy a 14 year old boy greaser who is high-strung most of the time, always looking around cautiously when he is walking alone. “I was sweating something fierce, although I was cold. I could feel my palms getting clammy and the perspiration running down my back. I get like that when I’m real scared”(Hinton 4). Ponyboy can never have no worries when he is walking home all by himself, not knowing what could happen next. To add on, Johnny one of Ponyboy’s good friends is the most cautious and scared one of the group. He was jumped by many Socs one night and had gotten beat up very badly. Many young adult novels are full of memorable charters. Many charters face obstacles and hardship and change due to it. At the beginning of S.E. Hinton’s Novel The Outsiders Dally is hard, cold, and unbreakable. however, at the end of the story, his emotions overcome him because of what he went through.
While S.E. Hinton’s The Outsiders touches on identity, agency, and community, I believe the major theme is identity. The question of how people can be so different and have such different lifestyles yet share the same fundamental human characteristics is one that Hinton explores in depth through Ponyboy’s examination of his own identity and the identities of the other young adults in his town. Ponyboy grapples with the distinction between greasers and Socs several times throughout the novel, such as when Cherry Valance claims “you greasers have a different set of values” (38). In the same conversation with Cherry, Ponyboy later claims that the reason greasers and Socs are different is that “it’s feeling – you don’t feel anything and we feel
Most of the characters in “The Outsiders” lack parental guidance which causes them to make different decisions. One thing most of the characters do is smoke cancer sticks (cigarettes) , and drink alcohol. They end up making inarticulate decisions and are not as successful as they could be. Also, the Greasers and the Socs get involved in fights and someone always ends up getting hurt. The characters are always watchful of getting jumped.
Now some people believe 8th graders should not study The Outsiders because the book doesn't cover the same issues we deal with now, like racism, and because it glorifies gangs and violence. The Outsiders doesn’t deal with issues we have to deal with as regularly as a society. Nevertheless, the book still has the same effect on people as it would if the book had been about racism. In the book, the greasers got jumped by the Socs because they were bored, and they could, but that doesn’t mean that someone who gets bullied and jumped can’t relate to the greasers getting called names and getting physically hurt when they walked home alone. Even if the reason the person is being jumped is different.
The chapters 1-5 of the Outsiders by S.E. Hinton, is about two gangs the greasers and the Socs, who are always causing trouble. In the greaser gang, the protagonist, Ponyboy, is always getting good grades and is the smartest in the gang. This novel by S.E Hinton, The Outsiders shows a crucial point that everybody is special in some way and should be known as who they are individuality not as a group. The Outsiders is a book that describes 2 gangs , the luxurious Socs, and the hoodlum Greasers. While they have conflicts with each other, the protaganist, Ponyboy, finds his identity outside of the gang. The important message of the story is that everyone has a unique personality that are developed by being in a group of people away from home, this identity can shape anyone’s way of life and the path they may take in the future. First of all, Socs and greasers have a trademark that showed who was part of their gang, Socs are know for Mustangs, Madras, and leather jackets;
Ponyboy has a philosophy about sticking together since he and his group of friends were more like a family than a “gang”. An act of loyalty was when their parents passed away and Darry worked a full-time job to support his younger brothers instead of going to college. Johnny 's friendship and loyalty toward Ponyboy seem to escalate too far when he kills a Soc, who started to drown Ponyboy after threatening them with a switchblade. Friendship is a two way street and each individual must do their part to contain a healthy relationship. Two friends who share the bond of

An important theme of the outsiders would be that life is not always fair and bad things happen to all kinds of people no matter how famous or rich you are, but no matter what happens you always have to move on and deal with it. In the book, The Outsiders by S.E Hinton, the Greasers have a lot of unfair things happen to them no matter how nice or respectful they act. Going through all the stuff the Greasers go through they have to mature more quickly and lose their innocence at a young age. For example, at the drive through when Cherry was taking to Ponyboy, she said, “No not innocent. You’ve seen too much to be innocent” (26).

We were assigned to read a story and make a book report of it, I decided to do it on The Outsiders. When I made this decision, I did not know what a huge change would this story make in me. The Outsiders is about the adventure of a young man who lived in a society with two classes divided by their socio-economic status: the “socs” and the “greasers”. Because he belonged to lower class, the greasers, he went through situations that kids that age don 't usually go through, like smoking or, you know, killing people. He and his friends have adventures, and he tells this story to bring attention to some of them, more on this later.
