From this inauspicious beginning, Tweed managed to build a power base in his ward. He served as an alderman in 1852-53 and then was elected to a term in the U.S. House of Representatives, 1853-55. With serious controversy over the Volstead Act the country was greatly divided. Prohibition was a disaster across America and the more reforment from the government just made things worse.

The 1920s were a time of complete change in the United States. Just coming out of World War I the people wanted change. Warren G. Harding saw that the people wanted change so that is what he talked about in his “Return to Normalcy” speech in 1920. Many people were very pleased with what Harding had to say in this speech. Calvin Coolidge who was Vice President under Harding also gave a speech in 1925 that had similar ideas as Harding’s speech.

The same goes for a popular stagecoach driver of the mid 1800s, a man named Charley Parkhurst, who is best known for being a woman disguised as a man.

The affair shows how he’s been corrupted because he has always had more money than anyone else, so he has developed a sense of being kind of reckless and ungoverned. He reached a state where he can do whatever he wants because he’s the big dog around to say.

The 1920’s, or “The Roaring 20’s”, was a decade that witnessed exciting social changes. It was a time of prosperity and dissipation, bootleggers and jazz dancers, and most importantly, it was a decade of The Prohibition Era. The Prohibition Era is basically an era which banned the manufacture, transportation, import and export, and the sale of alcoholic beverages. It was meant to reduce crime, corruption, and social problems and increase the overall hygiene of America. However, this social and political experiment failed.
