The battle of Gettysburg consisted of three days of combat between the Union and the Confederacy in the American Civil War in 1863. After defeating the Union Army of the Potomac at Chancellorsville, Confederate General Robert E. Lee was optimistic and switched from defense to offense. He hoped to gain the support of foreign forces with a successful second invasion of the North. In Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, the Army of the Potomac stood between Lee and Washington D. C. under the command of General George Gordon Meade. On July 1st, the two sides fought. Generals Hill and Ewell of the Confederates drove Union forces back towards Cemetery Hill and Culp's Hill. Ewell refused to pursue the Union troops on the hill as he deemed their position too advantageous. Later that day, more Union corps arrived to strengthen the defense further. The story was based off of the novel, The Killer Angels, by Michael Shaara. All of the people in the movie were real people. The actors' hair and costumes closely resembled the person that they were acting as. No fictional characters were created to add any drama or secondary plots to the movie. There were not any romantic subplots added to the film either. The battles were portrayed as they occurred historically. Most of the action was filmed at the Gettysburg National. The other scenes were filmed in Gettysburg so the setting and landscape was still very close to accurate. On the second day of fighting, most of the focus was on Colonel Chamberlain and his Maine regiment. There were other battles occurring simultaneously on Cemetery Hill, Culp’s Hill and other places but the film did not really address them. Of course, there are a few minor historical inaccuracies but this movie largely stays true to the historical
First of all the geography forced the Confederates to switch from offense to defense. The Battle of Gettysburg was the first and last battle fought in the North. All the other battles were fought in the South so the Confederate’s people and towns were constantly in danger. Document A illustrates that the General Lee were tired of being on the defense and wanted to be on the offense for a change. Document A states that even though the Confederates tried their hardest they were pushed back onto the defensive and ultimately lost the war (273).
By the time Grants division get there and start shooting at the Fort, Confederates go after McClernands division. The confederates new that the first ones that shoot, the Union is trying to distract the confederates. So the confederates storm all over McClernands division. Grant then pushes back while McClernand is still fighting. Smith had sent reinforcements to McClernand (Dougherty, 2007).
The union were able to attack Lees center multiple times but McClellan let the rebels retreat and regroup. Which let the battle carry on longer than needed. Then the union decided to attack Jackson(left flank) which was located at dunkers church, and were able to push Jackson out. On July 2, 1863, which was the second day of fighting at Gettysburg, we attacked Wilcox’s Alabama Brigade under General Winfield Hancock’s orders. There were 5 to 1 odds against us. We kept the Confederates off of Cemetery Ridge. About 215 people died, including our commander Colonel William Colvill, and our flag fell 5 times. We were reinforced by Company F the next day.

It was the final day where the Confederates took a full assault with 12,000 confederates known as Pickett’s Charge which was a center line attacked against the Union. For the Confederacy, the number of soldiers was about half of the Union’s amount with only around 70,000. This battle was the first Urban battle of the war, forcing citizens and families out of their homes and some into the woods.
