Guns and the Media It seems the media talks a lot about gun control and gun rights. The question is: Do they talk about it to stop violence or get rid of guns? In the past ten years the media has talked about guns a lot more than most of the other topics. The media’s main points are that we need to either get rid of guns completely or at least put more restrictions on them. Here are some statistics to show why this would be a bad idea. There are 45 guns to every 100 people in Switzerland. That is the fourth highest gun ownership rate in the world. The country has one of the world’s lowest homicide rates.” For Honduras “There is 3 guns per 100 people and they have the highest overall crime rate in the world.” The more guns a country has, there is less crime. Statistics show this. (procon.org) The second amendment of the United States constitution says “A well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms will not be infringed.” Yet the media and even some of the most well-known politicians attempt to infringe upon our rights. One of the politicians, Hillary Clinton, once said “I will get the NRA shut down for good f I become president. If we can ban handguns, we will do it.” But then one of our most important founding fathers (George Washington) …show more content…
The U.K has a total gun ban. They are number one in the world for violent crimes (2,034 per 100k people). They also have the second highest overall crime rate in the European Union. Their total crimes are 10,892 per 100k people. The U.S is number one in the world for gun ownership (88 per 100 people) and is not even in the top ten countries for violent crimes (466 per 100k people). The U.S is 28th in the world for murders (297 per 100K) and has a total crimes rate of 3,959 per 100k people.
It’s been said by many people that guns need controlled restricted and even banned. Restricting who gets their hands on guns is a good thing, but it has shown that countries with more restrictive gun licensing laws show fewer deaths by firearms and a lower gun ownership rate. A lab was done and showed that for every 100 people there is about 88 guns. Stated in the same article on the Huffington post it was said that “similar results have been found by the United Nations Office of Drugs and Crime, which states that countries with higher levels of firearm ownership also have higher firearm homicide rates.” (Huffington post 2015).
Gun control is a big issue being discussed in America. Many events in the past 5 years give us reason to discuss the issue of guns. Some examples being the Sandy Hook school shooting around 4 years ago. A mentally unstable man had access to a gun, went to school where his mother was teaching, and killed many children, teachers, and other staff members. Why should others be harmed when they did nothing at all?
The main hypotheses or predictions of the study are less guns equals less crime and more guns equals more crime. The researcher used data from countries all around the world including Russia, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Belarus, Hungary, Ukraine, Slovenia, France, Switzerland and many more. The article has studied a great amount of indication from a diverse amount of international sources. Regions within nations that have more gun possession should generally have more murders than the countries with less gun possession in a like area. The conclusion of the study that was performed across places close in distance show that a huge number of nations that posses more guns contain more deaths and that nations that have enforced strict gun control laws have attained considerable diminutions in the amount of criminal violence or suicides.
Some days crime rates are up and then the next they are down, what we do know is that America is becoming safer. In 2005, 11,346 persons were killed by firearm violence 477,040 persons were victims of a crime committed with a firearm, (National Institute of Justice). Surprisingly, a lot of gun violence in America is related to self defense. Between 1987 and 1990 it was found that guns were used in defense during a crime incident 64,615 times annually. This equates to two times out of 1,000 incidents (0.2%) that occurred in this time frame.
Gun control and gun rights have become such a hot topic throughout the United States that people are beginning to question if the fault of such violence actually lies with guns. This isn’t the issue, the problem is that the US government is incapable of passing gun legislation, social media blames mental illness for mass shootings, and gun policies aren’t strict enough on selling guns. The only danger in having a gun is when it is put in the hands of the wrong person. Due to strong opposing ideals between both the Republican and Democratic Party within the house and senate, the American government has been incapable of passing adequate gun legislation.
However, when gun control laws are implemented, it is proven that crime rates will not decrease. In 1999, 6.3 million violent crimes were committed in the U.S. (Laws.com) These violent crimes include rape, sexual assault, robbery, and assault. It was shown that only 8% of these crimes involved usage of a firearm. In the early 1970’s, around 19% of murders involved guns. When gun control laws were implemented, the rate raised to about 50%.
Gun Violence In America Gun violence in america accounted for 33,636 deaths in 2015 alone and that number is only rising. If every american was able to obtain a firearm imagine what the numbers of gun related deaths. Even gun related injuries caused many more hospital visits in america what many other common incidents. That is why america needs to implement tighter gun laws to reduce the amount of gun violence in America. Without this we will continue to see shooting, gun death, gun injuries resulting in more and more gun related violence.
In 2017 alone, approximately 16,000 people were killed by firearms in the United States, a three percent increase from last year (Wolf). Gun control in the United States has been an issue for many years regarding the most logical way to make guns less of the threat to civilians. Many argue for a complete ban on any and all guns while many others believe in stricter regulations and background checks to ensure only those who should have a gun can get one. The issue of gun control in the United States should be addressed in a way that will actually see change as well as keep people safe. While gun control has little noticeable benefits, there are some points to mention.
Gun Control Debate Jake Novak, in an article for CNBC titled, “Gun control isn’t the answer. We already know how to stop the violence,” gives his opinion regarding the controversial issue of gun control. Novak argues that gun control is not the answer to rising gun violence but that proper enforcement of the law would go a long way in reducing the cases of gun violence in America. He states, “We actually solved the issue of rising gun violence in America in the mid-1990’s and again in the early 2000’s by doing something radical. We enforced the law” (Novak 28).
Gun Control Gun control has become a polarizing and controversial issue around the globe. There have been many reported issues of mass shootings both in schools and in the public, making it a hot button issue. Proponents argue that, if the government strictly controls the ownership of guns, such tragedies can be prevented. Most Americans have an obsession with guns because the law allows them to do so. Therefore, they are always ready to scoff at anyone trying to control gun ownership.
In today’s society, one of the most alienating issues in American politics is gun control. More specifically, the issue is whether or not guns should be banned in the United States. Some people would say that guns should be banned because it would reduce crime as a whole and keep citizens safer. These people, enthusiasts of stricter gun laws, fear being safe in their country where there are so many people who have access to guns. Opponents of this argument, however, also fear losing safety.
Gun control also limits our constitutionally derived right to own firearms. If gun control is enforced, law-abiding citizens will be forced to give up their guns and their right to own guns, while many criminals who own guns may illegally keep theirs. As the saying goes “If guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns.” Guns are an important aspect of our society in many ways. They allow for protection, recreation, and hunting.
Guns are just a tool, like knives and hammers and it completely depends on the people on how they use it. People who support guns and arms say that the Second Amendment secures individual’s right to carry guns with them and that gun rights is needed for self-protection, and was intended for military to have peace and defend the country if needed (Spitzer, 70). Most of the Americans use guns as a source to protect themselves and they believe that gun ownership prevents crime. A study conducted on November 26, 2013 showed that bans on weapons did not significantly affect murder rates at the state level (Lane, 5). Moreover, even if the rules and regulations are executed on gun control, not all criminals obey the law.
To begin with, the second amendment of the US constitution gives citizens the right to carry or possess a gun. As a result, gun violence in America has increased drastically over the years due to guns being utilised in a reprehensible manner and people getting wedged in the crossfire, hence why stringent law enforcements need to be put in place regarding guns in the US. “Since 1982, there have been at least 61 mass murders carried out with firearms; in most cases, the killers had obtained their weapons legally”.
Honduras reported to have the highest homicide rate and 78.6 percent of all homicides are by gun, an estimated 67 firearm-related deaths per 100,000 people occur annually (Pariona, 2017). In correlation, their gun laws are relatively lax, allowing each civilian to own up to five guns. Venezuela ranked number two for firearm-related deaths, they too possess lenient gun laws. However, this presumption is not the case for all countries with high gun violence. Focusing more on developed countries, the United States holds the highest amount of homicides by firearms.
