Throughout the United States the judicial system has interpreted the 1st Amendment very broadly. This interpretation has included freedom of both religious belief and most religious practices. Historically the courts have ruled in favor of the individual’s right to choose prayer and/ or religious ritual in place of medical treatment. This freedom gives an adult the right to seek out traditional medical attention, faith healing, herbal or other alternative treatments, or choose no treatment at all when diagnosed with an illness. As a result, the broad spectrum of freedom within the 1st Amendment, parents or guardians may wish to exercise the same rights for their minor children.

In this unit I learned about the procedures that follow the aftermath of an event in which the President is incapable to perform his or her responsibilities and duties as President of the United States of America. Before I started this portfolio I did not know the specific procedures that the President and Congress must follow when determining if the President can serve his country. I also learned who will fill in the spot of the successor if both the President and Vice President were unable to fulfill their duties. I now understand the purpose and procedures of the Presidential Succession Act and the 25th amendment.

The 19th Amendment We have all heard of the 27 amendments at one time or another, but could you tell the meaning of each one? Each individual amendment has a its reasons for becoming an amendment, going through the process of being ratified and then eventually becoming an amendment. The 19th amendment took time and many people, especially women fighting for their rights that they deserved.

The questions at hand were complex, and involved citizenship and government aid, and had to take the public’s varied opinions into account, as well as the political makeup of Congress. The 13th Amendment freed the slaves, but gave the slaves nothing except their freedom. The 14th amendment defined citizenship, then not only made discriminatory legislation (such as black codes) illegal, but provided consequences for states that did not comply. The Reconstruction Acts, although too broad and expensive to be applied in their entirety, required that the former Confederate States ratify the 13th and 14th amendments, as well as submit redrafted state Constitutions in order to be readmitted to the Union. In 1935, Long led the fight for Louisiana to abolish the poll tax. The expensive poll tax required voters to pay a fee of 2 dollars (equivalent to 24 dollars today) to vote. Long’s success allowed for 250,000 new voters, including many poor African-Americans. Likewise, the CPUSA also campaigned for the abolishment of the poll tax.

The 16th amendment instituted Congress's right to inflict a Federal income tax. During the Civil War, to help pay war expenses, Congress passed the Revenue Act of 1861, the first U.S. Federal income tax. This act included a tax on personal incomes. After ten years, the act was repealed, leading Congress to eventually enact a Flat Rate Federal Income Tax in 1894. This new tax stated that anyone who made more than $800 would be charged with a 3% tax and then finally a 3-5% on income that exceeds $600.

The twenty-sixth amendment was the amendment that lowered the legal voting age from 21 to 18. This was a huge step for American people and the country to allow more people to vote and voice opinion. In this day of age many people have strong opinions and feeling towards how the country should be run. Unfortunately some of the people that complain and have opinions about politics did not vote for politicians to represent them. All citizens have not always had the right to vote and people that refuse to vote now-a-days do not have the right to complain about what decisions politicians make.
