A time that I felt out of place was my first few days at college. My parents had just left and I knew no one. I was in a strange environment and didn't know what to do. I felt this way because I was used to my same routine for almost 18 years. To feel comfortable in this new environment, I had to find a place where I could be myself but also find a new routine. This was the only way I would survive the next four years at UMass Dartmouth. After joining a local sorority at my school, I was able to make new friends and feel comfortable. This is where I felt I fit in this community. Discourse communities consist of a group of people who link up in order to pursue the same objectives and goals. There are many different examples of these discourse …show more content…
But to assure that anything is performed properly, yes, there are standards that we must meet.” Each different pillar is a way to represent a group. They are what makes each organization unique, who they are and what they believe in. Each group has their own pledging process, this consist of different tactics on proving your loyalty and commitment to the sorority. In Greek life the sororities and fraternities have their own language, that others may not know. The first is the Greek alphabet and symbols. They are used for the name of the sorority or fraternity and way to represent their letters. There are also different terms like lavalier, legacy, philanthropy and much more, which have a meaning with something to do with Greek life. This is what makes them a discourse community; all of these different parts of their life unites them into one important entity. To be a part of this discourse community you have to rush, then complete a pledging process in which you prove your worthiness to your future sisters. Each sorority and fraternity has a different process where they show what they represent
For me, the logos, pathos and ethos perspective of joining a discourse community I had been part of, taught me a lesson about interpersonal skills, organizational systems and professionalism. My aim of this paper is to share my experience of joining Chitwan Pharmacy Student Association (CPSA) via use of rhetorical skills that we have discussed in class of English 1301.
As a Sacramento State college student, I have observed that every student belongs to different discourse communities. Every student becomes part of an academic discourse community when declaring a major or minor. Gary D. Schmidt and William J. Vande Kopple define academic discourse community as “a group of people who share ways to claim [understand], organize, communicate, and evaluate meanings.” The academic discourse communities that I belong to will help me in the future to have experience working with others. Being part of the Sacramento State community, I have perceived that I belong to two academic discourse communities that have impacted my life in significant ways.
Alpha Phi has a mission statement, and that is "Alpha Phi is a sisterhood of outstanding women supporting one another in lifelong achievement." According to Swales, "'discourse community' testifies to the increasingly common assumption that discourse operates within conventions defined by communities, be they academic disciplines or social groups," Alpha Phi sisters are able to support each other
I chose to write about the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. because I am very interested in the history. I have heard many things about the African American Greek life and I want to learn more. I feel that being on campus here at Oklahoma State University, I need to take advantage of the African American organizations offered here in Stillwater. Not just yet, as a freshman, am I going to pledge for anything
“Bringing the gifts that my ancestors gave, I am the dream and the hope of the slave. I rise, I rise, I rise.,” to become a Delta Woman. When asked to express why I should be awarded the honor & pleasure of being apart this great sorority; I must admit I was a bit overwhelmed but also very humbled. However, I am reminded of the great women Delta Sigma Theta has helped mold some of the most influential women in the world. I want to be apart of the most illustrious sorority organization.
My intention is not to join this organization to step or because I like to party but, because I believe whole-heartedly in the values of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc., scholarship, service, sisterhood and finer womanhood. I believe that through Zeta Phi Beta Inc. I will be able to fine tune my leadership skills, make lifelong friendships and help people on my journey as others did for me. It is my hope that this lifestyle will change my life for the better.
“The chief significance of Alpha Phi Alpha lies in its purpose to stimulate, develop, and cement an intelligent, trained leadership in the unending fight for freedom, equality, and fraternity. Our task is endless.” Jewel Henry Arthur Callis. Since its founding Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity has remained loyal to its ideal of providing advocacy for its community.
I’m interested in joining the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Incorporated. I would love to join this organization, because I love what they stand for and what they have done for the world so far. They have done things as opening school in Haiti and Africa, Delta house in Africa, and many other things. One of the reason I want to join this prestigious organization is because they do stuff to better the country that I was born in, and everything that’s helping Haiti becomes a better country is something I have to at least try to be a part of. It will also help me get started with my plan on opening a youth center in Haiti.
In the article "The Concept of a Discourse Community" by John Swales (1990). He aimed to define the meaning of a discourse community; then he carefully deconstructs discourse community into six fundamental attributes that are important for recognizing a discourse community. Swales’ definition of a discourse community is a group that has objectives or purposes, and utilize communication to accomplish those objectives. He states that a discourse community is presented as a more practical and purposeful gathering than speech fraternity or speech group. The six essential characteristics that Swales (1990) belief to be the core of a discourse community are its goals, intercommunication, participation, genres, Lexis, and expertise.
The tenth National President, Dorothy I. Height, wrote: “To preserve tradition, we must bring it into the current decade and make sure it remains viable for decades to come.” Protocol is something mandatory for all sorority’s and fraternity’s. In Delta Sigma Theta protocol is prescribed as respect and recognition for founders, the Nation President and Past National Presidents, the Regional Director/Representative, Chapter Charter Members, and Honorary Members. It is a fact that every Sorority and Fraternity has some type of tradition. In Delta Sigma Theta there are three rites of passage.
To the women of the grad chapter of Delta Sigma Theta, Incorporated: The purpose of this letter is to inform you of my interest in becoming a member of the grad chapter of Delta Sigma Theta, Incorporated. My desire to inspire young men and women and make a significant impact on their lives is just one of many reasons I aspire to join your great sorority. While growing up at a young age my mom worked out of my sibling lives. I did not have many positive female role models I could look to for guidance in different situations.
Like plenty of other girls, I never saw myself joining a sorority. I also lacked the self-esteem to believe that I would actually receive a bid from any sorority. However, in my first semester of being a freshman; I decided to participate in fall recruitment. Upon receiving a bid for Alpha Sigma Tau, I immediately felt a change taking place within myself.
An important discourse community that was a part of my life was my volleyball team during my four years of high school. I started playing my first year going into high school and continued until I graduated. Until now I wasn’t even aware that would even be considered a discourse community, but it fits all of the qualifications of Swales’ definition of a discourse community. Goals
“The Concept of Discourse Community.” Writing About Writing, A College Reader. Ed. Elizabeth Wardle and Doug Downs. 2nd ed.
A discourse community is a group of people who share a set of qualities that connect them. This may be they're own language, values, beliefs, goals and purposes. I have chosen to research the legal discourse community because of my aspirations to become a lawyer and have found that they share nearly all of the qualities mentioned before. It takes a lot of education to be fluent in this association’s “language”, in fact lawyers must go through 3 years of schooling just to be a part of it. This vocabulary includes specialized words used only for the legal field, borrowed words from different languages, ordinary words that have a different meaning when used in the legal context, and old or archaic words that are not usually used in modern English..
