The Hiawatha Robinson Case

Would you believe that the mastermind of three murders could be out of jail in just eight years? Do you think it is fair that the other person involved with the murders was sentenced to life in jail and will only be eligible for parole after serving 25 years? Would it change your mind after knowing that the mastermind is just an 12-year-old? Jasmine Richardson was the 13 year old behind this terrible murder. Most wouldn’t believe someone that young could come up and go through with something that terrible.

Mr.Ewell is known for being very cruel and mean. Even his son has the same mean attitude. Robinson is used as a scapegoat because he is an easy target. Therefore, because of the circumstances it would put him in a situation

Anthony Robinson strove all his life to escape the caste system of the ghetto he grew up in. He graduated from a prestigious college and joined the military, only to be falsely identified in a rape case and convicted. He argued many times that he was innocent and was devastated that he ended up in jail, adding to the reputation of those who grow up in the ghetto usually end up in prisons. He had to serve thirteen years in jail before he was paroled able to prove his innocence; he accomplished this with a DNA sample after saving his own money to fund a DNA examination to prove he did not commit the crime and clear his record(1,2). Sadly, Robinson is not the only one who's life was ruined because he was falsely convicted and given no fair trial.

Hutchinson held meetings with women to discuss her own theological views, recent sermons, and question church policies. Robinson’s murder for two reasons. The first reason was that It was all right in the end. Many think that just because it all turned out okay in the end, that the boys should have kept the dangerous secret. This is not an adequate reason for the boys to not tell the authorities because if they would have told them, everything would be okay sooner rather than later.

Lastly, the outcomes of both Robinson’s and Stinney’s convictions would be very different in a modern day courtroom due to the cruel and unusual punishment clause of the 14th Amendment. In 2005 the Supreme Court ruled that it was cruel and unusual punishment to execute someone convicted of murder that was under the age of eighteen (Juveniles and the death penalty). Although inmates do not have the same constitutional rights as free citizens, this same clause would have applied to Tom Robinson and his rights while in jail (Prisoner Rights). While modern day laws allow the shooting of a fleeing unarmed inmate, there are many stipulations to this law. Today’s officers would have to prove that there was an immediate threat to do so.

Dear Members of the Jury, I am writing you this letter to tell to you that Tom Robinson should be proven not guilty. This case would have never happened if the truth would have been told and it wasn’t a case between black and white. There are many ways that Robinson is not guilty. One of these reasons that Tom Robinson is not guilty is that if you listened to the Sheriff 's testimony he stumbled frequently and when he said something and then Atticus would say something different he would agree with Atticus. Perceptions are often incorrect when one is unwilling to believe or does not have all of the facts. These inaccurate perceptions can lead to false accusations, which in turn can cause an immense amount of suffering. More specifically, the people of the Southern town of Maycomb perceived African Americans to be uneducated and untrustworthy, thereby declaring the Negroes as inferior to themselves. When Tom Robinson ran from the Ewell home upon the arrival of Bob Ewell, the unkempt and unreliable father of the alleged rape victim, it was assumed that Robinson had done something of suspicion.
