The Great Gatsby By F. Scott Fitzgerald: Chapter Analysis

Chapters 1-5: Thomas has begun his new life. Once he was out of the box, he was introduced to all the Gladers. Alby, the first person to arrive in the glade introduced Thomas to Chuck, who was to help him around the Glade that night. Thomas was the grennie to the Glade, and had already made a lot of friends and one enemy, Gally. Chapters 6-10: Newt woke Thomas up, to show Thomas what lies in the maze.

Its been five years since Daisy and Gatsby have seen each other. Gatsby wants to see change this and see Daisy again. Gatsby asks Nick, through Jordan, to invite Daisy over for tea. Nick is not supposed to tell Daisy that Gatsby is coming. Nick

In the story, “The Great Gatsby”, by F. Scott Fitzgerald, portrays an idea that Nick’s personality is being changed throughout the story along with his emotional state by the rich and powerful people he is around. The progression of Nick throughout the story shows a man who wanted to live a simple life at home but then turns quickly into a person who he himself couldn't recognize. In the beginning, the story begins through the eyes of Nick. It’s describing how he lives in West Egg in a small house in New Jersey. He is surrounded by rich people in mansions with one of them being an old friend that he went to Yale with who lives across the bay.

Gatsby is dishonest about his past quite frequently in hopes of impressing Daisy. Nick catches onto this as Gatsby explains his family history, “The phrases were so threadbare that they evoked no image except that of a turbaned ‘character’... ”(Fitzgerald 70). Nick notices how flimsy Gatsby’s back story is. He tries to impress those around him in hopes the word will get to Daisy but instead, embarrasses himself.

Foster examines the intertextuality of “Sonnet 73” from Shakespeare, “The Book of Ecclesiastes” from The Hebrew Bible, and Hotel du Lac from Anita Brookner, to explain that “for as long as anyone’s been writing anything, the seasons have stood for the same set of meanings” (Foster 186). People believe “that spring has to do with childhood and youth, summer with adulthood and romance and fulfillment and passion, autumn with decline and middle age and tiredness...,” and “winter with old age and resentment and death” (186). In the captivating novel The Great Gatsby, written by F.Scott Fitzgerald, Chapters three and four have many differences that arise within the pages. The main contrast is Nick and Gatsby’s relationship. To begin, in chapter three Nick Carraway hears more rumors about Gatsby and gets to see his appearance. In chapter 4 however, he gets to observe his personality. In chapter three when Nick finally sees’s Gatsby, he says “ I could see nothing sinister about him.

F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel, The Great Gatsby, tells the story of a man by the name Gatsby through the eyes and ears of Nick Carraway. The young man from Minnesota travels to New York to learn the bond business and gets caught in the middle of love affairs and rich socialites. In West Egg, Nick buys a small cottage next-door to the young and wealthy, Jay Gatsby. Nick Carraway brings a charming and personal voice to the people of New York through his honesty and observations of those around him.

This passage is taken from the first chapter of the classic novel The Great Gatsby. During this part of the novel Daisy Buchanan is talking to Jordan Baker and Nick Carraway about when her daughter was being born. She discovers that her baby is a girl and states that she “hope(s) she’ll be a fool” because “that’s the best thing a girl can be in this world.” This quote shows how Daisy perceives what it is like to be a girl during the 20s. Although this quote does not relate directly to the themes presented within the novel, it is significant because it gives insight for the reader towards who Daisy is as a character.

Do you start acting differently when you are around certain people? This is based upon how much love you have for them. If you do not really like them, you would not necessarily tell them personal things, or even be nice to them. If you love them, you would get into deep conversations and talk about important things. F. Scott Fitzgerald shows this through Jay Gatsby, an important character in The Great Gatsby.

Gatsby throws extravagant parties that many people of importance came to. Daisy never comes to one of these parties, but Gatsby meets Jordan Baker, one of Daisy’s friends, at one of his parties. He asks Jordan questions about Daisy, and even gets Jordan to ask Nick to invite Daisy over so that Gatsby can see Daisy again. Gatsby searches for Daisy so much that he hopeless gets lost in doing everything possible that would please her. Gatsby allows his love to cloud his judgement and his love causes him to become lost searching for what he once

In the last passage of The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald, the reader gains insight into Gatsby’s life through the reflections of Nick Carraway. These reflections provide a summary of Gatsby’s life and also parallel the main themes in the novel. Through Fitzgerald’s use of diction and descriptions, he criticizes the American dream for transformation of new world America from an untainted frontier to a corrupted industrialized society. In the novel, Fitzgerald never mentions the phase “American Dream,” however the idea is significant to the story.

Nick was the man who helped out Gatsby arrange him to reunite with Daisy in chapter 5 and had to deal with all of the drama throughout Tom and Gatsby during his summer in East Egg and West Egg. Daisy is shown to be dependent on love. During the course of the novel, she went from Gatsby, to tom, back to Gatsby, and back to Tom. “I did love him once-but I loved you too.” (Fitzgerald 132) Contrary to what others may believe, Jordan is the exact opposite of the typical 1920’s woman.

In chapter six of the great gatsby a lot of the motives, characteristics and other important attributes of the characters were revealed in the chapter. At the beginning of chapter six the reader and Nick learn that everything about Gatsby was a lie; even his name. We learn that he didn’t inherit any money, lived on a farm in North Dakota, and his real name is James Gatz. Gatsby’s motives were to become extremely rich and win the love of Daisy. He does this by lying to everyone to convince them that he is old money, putting him higher up the social ladder to get Daisy to notice him.

In The Great Gatsby,written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, three parties have taken place; the Buchanan’s house party, chapter one, the apartment party, chapter two, and Nick’s first Gatsby party, chapter three. Out of all the people that attended each of the parties, Nick relates most to Jay Gatsby. The two reasons that stood out were that both have good morals and both were soldiers in the same war. Both Nick Carraway and Jay Gatsby have good personal morals. This was seen especially in chapter two by Nick when he was at the party.

The Great Gatsby Literary Analysis “They were careless people…” says Nick Carraway, the narrator of The Great Gatsby. In a story depicting the 1920s during a time of prosperity, growth, and the emergence of the America as a major global power, this statement may seem to be contrary. But in reality, Nick Carraway’s description of his friends and the people he knew, was not only true, but is an indication of those who were striving for the American dream. F. Scott Fitzgerald suggests that the American Dream is foolish, the people who pursue it are immoral and reckless, and this pursuit is futile. First, F. Scott Fitzgerald proposes that the American dream is foolish.
