The Erechtheion: The Sacred Tokens

In chapter 3 of the “Sacred Quest” the book discusses “the ways in which the Sacred is manifested in the world of human experience” (39). In particular, the book discusses examples of sacred persons, objects, time, and space. The Sacred Quest states that there is a pattern in religions and breaks them up into 3 types of sacred appearance: prophetic, sacramental, and mystical. The first, prophetic, is associated most with Judaism and Islam, focusing on a person or prophet. The second is most apparent in Christianity, which emphasizes the presence of the sacred through aspects of material reality and stresses the role of priests.

In Ancient Egypt, the temples were all constructed from stone because the gods were to live in these temples for all of eternity and lack of wood. The temple walls were covered with inscriptions and images. They were often historical events, such as important events at the temple or of the pharaoh’s reign. The Temple of Dendur depicted Pihor worshipping Isis and Pedesi worshipping Osiris as well as Emperor Augustus praying and offering the gods. Traditionally, the drawings would’ve been of the pharaoh.

It was completed around 22~10 BC on the West Bank of the Nile River and the temple was dedicated to two Egyptian gods: Isis, the goddess of Health, Marriage and Wisdom, and Osiris, god of the afterlife, death, life, and resurrection. The primary medium used is Aeolian Sandstone and the Dimensions are 21 by 21 by 41 ft, however there are not much space inside the temple as the space inside is divided with thick walls. The sandstone wall of the temple are decorated with reliefs; the base of the temple shows papyrus and lotus plants growing out of the Nile, which symbolize Hapy, god of the Nile. There are two columns at the gate resemble tall papyrus stalks with lotus blossoms capital that support the entablature on the top. The Entablature above the gate has images of the sun disk flanked by the outspread wings of Horus, the sky god.

We will focus specifically on how Eryximachus’ idea of Erôs as the Good itself versus Socrates idea of Erôs as only the seeker of the Good effect their arguments integrity. We will also explore how both of these speeches are similar in their understanding of Erôs in terms of a balancing force although Eryximachus focuses on the nature of Love whereas Socrates turns to the effects of Erôs (Naugle, 2010, pp. 7-9). To arrive at the conclusion that while one personally prefer the account of Erôs given by Eryximachus, Socrates speech is more convincing due to the issues raised by equating Erôs to the Good.

During the fifth century B.C.E., there were two forms of tension that contributed to the artistic outpour. The first source of tension, was the conflict between the Greeks’ pride in their accomplishments and their concern that overreaching would bring retribution. The second source of tension, was between the soaring hopes and achievements of individuals and the claims and limits their fellow citizens put on them. An example of art, or in this case the architecture of the time, would be the buildings Pericles ordered to be constructed. Pericles undertook a great building program, that developed buildings and temples that honored the city’s gods.

Two very important historic buildings from the Greek and Roman civilizations, namely the Parthenon and the Pantheon respectively, are worthy of academic exploration. An analysis of their function and style will help to put their design and features into perspective, and create a better appreciation for their emulation in Western civilization. These buildings possess very unique individual characteristic designs, which bears testimony to the societies from which they originate. However, they are also a resourceful database of knowledge in terms of their symbolism, rich heritage of their era and application to the present civilization.

Who is the Holy Spirit The Holy Spirit is fully God and the third person of the Trinity. “For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.” 1 John 5:7 (KJV) The Bible tells us that the Holy Spirit is the third member of the Godhead and therefore fully God as well. The Bible also refers to the Holy Spirit as the “Spirit of God” and showing Him to be a part of God and having the nature of God.

Introduction: The Two Buildings; Parthenon in Athens and Pantheon in Rome are both classical heritage of the former world powers. Both buildings were temple built and dedicated to the gods of Athens and Romans. The excellent strength and the durability of these temples are unimaginable. Going by the length of time that these buildings have been in existence, one cannot but admires the brilliance of the ancient Greek and Roman architects for such excellent edifices that have outlived many generations, and yet remain a symbol of ancient Greek and Roman history.

Death is a “fixed event” in everyone’s lives, past and present. A lot can be told from the lives of the Ancient people by looking at their dead. In the “Twenty Objects” series, we looked at a couple of objects associated with death such as the Hagia Traida sarcophagus, the tombstone of Longinus Sdapeze and the Coin of Brutus. Each of these objects has a different story behind it but they are all connected through death. In this presentation I will discuss each of these objects which are linked through the macabre theme of death.
