Various gothic elements are depicted by the following gothic writers: Washington Irving, Richard Matheson and Edgar Allan Poe; elements such as: entrapment and supernatural characteristics are illustrated in the short stories: “The Devil and Tom Walker;” “Prey;” and “The Raven.” Entrapment was a significant element represented in all of the short stories aforementioned. In, “The Devil and Tom Walker,” soon after Tom Walker established his broker’s shop in Boston “he made money hand over hand, became a rich and mighty man, and exalted his cocked hat upon "Change." He built himself, as usual, a vast house, out of ostentation, but left the greater part of it unfinished and unfurnished, out of parsimony. He even set up a carriage in the fulness of his vain-glory, though he nearly starved the horses which drew it”(Irving 326). Irving illustrates …show more content…
Entrapment was also expressed in, “Prey,” when the doll of death is chasing after Amelia with lust for her blood, Amelia looks for an escape route through the front door when, “The door was held. Amelia reached up quickly to the bolt. It had been shot” (Matheson 6). Matheson illustrates physical entrapment in this quote, as she can not escape the doll that is out to kill her; however, this quote also illustrates symbolic mental entrapment, as Amelia’s mom continually holds her back from living her life, thereby trapping her inside to effectively die. Notwithstanding, entrapment was illustrated in, “The Raven,” as the ebony bird was fluttering above the widowered man’s chamber door Poe writes, “Quaff, oh quaff this kind nepenthe and forget this lost Lenore! Quoth the Raven, “Nevermore””(Poe 4). Poe

How Edgar Allan Poe Portrays Insanity in The Raven A literary analysis by Viktor Wemmer - TE13C The Raven is arguably Edgar Allan Poe’s most famous work and it has been both criticised and praised by people all around the world. It revolves around an unnamed narrator who was half reading, half sleeping while trying to forget about his lost love Lenore, tells us about how he during a bleak December notices someone tapping on his chamber door, but when he gets up to answer there is no one there. The same sound later is heard coming from his window, and a raven flies into his room when he proceeds to open it.
The speaker’s relationship with his “lost Lenore,” seems to be an unexpected one. Lenore is referred to as an angel, while the narrator is surrounded by ghosts and evil feelings. The feeling of terror which was felt when the narrator opened the door to find “darkness there and nothing more,” could have been reduced had a light been nearby to illuminate the hallway, but the importance of the darkness shows the audience that the lack of religion and prayers of the narrator are taking a toll on him, as the seemingly lack of religious beliefs Poe had also affected his life. Not only did Poe allude to the evil aspects of religions in this poem, but he also threw in a few allusions that make the audience question what Poe’s beliefs truly were. Poe alludes to the Hellenistic story of Pallas Athena in line 41, the narrator points out that this Raven is “perched upon a bust of Pallas,” Poe specifically chose Pallas because she and Lenore relate to each other in the ways that the two of them will only live on in their names.

Irving’s stories, “The Devil and Tom Walker, and “Rip Van Winkle” both show traits of romanticism because they both include the supernatural realm, youthful innocence over sophistication, shunning civilization, and folk culture.
In all three novels “The Feather Pillow” by Horacio Quiroga, “Prey” by Richard Matherson, and “ The Devil and Tom Walker” by Washington Irving all have an eloquent amount of elements all including Mystery/ambiguity: and a supernatural force included in their short stories. The authors purpose for these elements are to give the reader a thrill of mystery and supernatural forces that defy the nature of our world and fill the story with action, all wile keeping the reader reading to the end wile keeping them on the edge of their seat waiting to see what happens next. Each novel has supernatural forces teeming inside it ,effecting the novel and also adding -a so called- villain for the novel. First the short story “prey” by Matherson, has a supernatural
This poem also deals with losing hope, even though the narrator has no right to even have the small amount. This poem deals with his dead leave Lenore, and how the raven torments him into insanity. By telling the poem “The Raven “in first person point of view we learn that the narrator is alone Because we hear his thoughts as well as his spoken words we learn of the loss of his beloved, “For the rare and radiant maiden whom the angels name Lenore—“ the poem continues to chronicle the narrators search for the source of the noise. Without the first person point of view the narrators madness and anxiety would not be clear, Poe made it clear that the loss of a loved can create madness that can last forever. In the poem “The Raven,” Edgar Allen Poe uses repetition to builds suspense.
