The David Milgaard Case

On October 1, 2003, Dawna Cantrell was arrested and charged with the murder of her husband and two counts of tampering with evidence. Ms. Cantrell’s competency was questioned after evaluation by the defense expert, Dr. Eric Westfried. After subsequent evaluation by the state’s expert, Dr. Edward Siegel, both experts found that Ms. Cantrell had a “persecutory delusional disorder” and that her mental illness precluded her from assisting her attorney in her defense. The trial court found her incompetent to stand trial and ordered a dangerousness evaluation.

Jeffrey Moldowan and Michael Cristini, two men from Macomb County, Michigan, went on trial accused of rape and assault. The primary evidence against them consisted of the victim’s eyewitness identification and bite mark analysis by two dentists. Both dentists testified that the bite marks on the woman’s body matched the teeth of Cristini and Moldowan. One of those dentists, Allan Warnick, testified that the likelihood a bite mark on the female victim was made by someone other than Moldowan, “was at least 3 million to 1.” Later, the other dentist, Dr. Pamela Hammel recanted her testimony, saying that she had been uncertain that either defendant had in fact been responsible for the bite marks.

Andrew Mallard is a British-born Australian living in Western Australia. Andrew was new to the town when he was suspected of murdering Pamela Lawrence on May 23rd, 1994. Andrew Mallard was convicted on two pieces of evidence. The first piece of evidence was police notes, which claimed that Mallard had confessed. Though Mallard did not sign these notes.

The Scott and Laci Peterson case is about his wife getting murdered (Laci) with their eight month old year baby. In December 24, 2002 Laci Peterson was called in missing from her home in Modesto, California. Her husband called in to report it; he says when he returned home she was nowhere to be found after his fishing trip. Although, he told Laci’s half of the family that he went golfing at Cuesta College in San Luis Obispo where his wife attended college there. Her body was found in the San Francisco Bay about four months later.

The victim was threw in the river. The victim’s husband return home from an overnight trip to discover his wife missing and home a mess. The same day the husband discovered his wife missing her body was found by some fishermen. Christopher Simmons’s was going around town boasting and bragging about how he killed the victim and robbed her. Simmons’s was later arrested where he attended high school.

Darryl Howard was convicted of arson and murder in 1995. Firefighters arrived at the Few Gardens public housing complex in Durham, North Carolina to extinguish a blaze in an apartment and found the nude bodies of 29-year-old Doris Washington and her 13-year-old daughter Nishonda. Both females had been sexually assaulted. After the murders the police had found that Darryl Howard, 29-years-old, who lived in the same housing complex, was a friend of Nishonda and seen in the vicinity of her housing complex. It was discovered that Nishonda would run away frequently due to her mothers drug dealing.

The clip watched showed Brendan Dassey being interviewed by the police as a suspected accomplice to his uncle Steven Avery’s crime of the rape and murder of Teresa Halbach. This clip shows the police interrogating the teenager Brendan Dassey without any parent or lawyer present. This tape and his ensuing confession were the ultimate cause of his imprisonment where he was convicted of being an accomplice to murder and disposal of a body. Brendan Dassey’s conviction was ultimately overturned as the confession, which was the prosecutions’ leading evidence, was thrown out after it proved to be coerced. While the confession was coerced it is important to acknowledge that the officers were not entirely improper with how they conducted the interview.

In Adrian Peterson’s case, I decided that his action did reflect abuse. I began to research more about the details about this case and found that Peterson disciplined his four-year-old child using a tree branch. The hitting with the tree branch did result in multiple bruises and lacerations surrounding the boy’s body. Peterson publicly admitted that he did discipline his son because he pushed his brother while playing video games (Bonesteel, 2016). Abuse is defined as the “knowing, intentional, negligent” harmful punishment given to a child and physical abuse refers to hurting the minor with “objects that leave marks” (Cauffman, 2018).

Mass hysteria can make people do terrible things. Georgie Milton did something not many people have the guts to do, he took the life of his best friend to save him from the torture that awaited him, but, he took the life of another man and he took this life with the intention of murder. Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, there is no difference between euthanasia and murder; and to this indictment, George Milton has pleaded not guilty. If I am to prove him otherwise, you must find him so. Lennie Small has been described to us as a caring giant. He had no bad intentions; and it is fair to say that our witnesses have provided us with sufficient evidence to support my argument.

Social workers have several responsibilities. They have to provide service, justice, and dignity to a client. They have to possess integrity, competence, and patience. Social workers need to possess knowledge of human rights, and how to perform scientific inquiry. Social workers occasionally have cases in which problems ensue and a solution is not found within a certain time frame.

Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, you are here because one person in this courtroom decided to take law into her own hands. The defendant, Mrs. Dominique Stephens, murdered the man that she vowed to love. This sole act by the defendant is violation of all morals and her husband’s right to live. Afterwards, she even felt guilty about this violation of justice and called the cops on herself, and she later signed a written statement stating that she is guilty of the murder of Mr. Donovan Stephens. Then the defendant later recanted this statement and said that she only killed Mr. Stephens in self defense.

Dennis Nilsen is known today as the European Jeffrey Dahmer, the Muswell Hill Murderer, and the Kindly Killer. They are compared because Nilsen and Dahmer both began killing around 1978, were homosexual and dismembered young boys (NY Times 1992 & Bio.com). They also both have run-ins with the police and are charming enough to talk their way out the murderous accusations. Nilsen would eventually be charged with seven counts of murder and two attempted murders, however he admits to more than fifteen killings. Nilsen was born, Dennis Andrew Nilsen in November of 1945 in Scotland.

Mallard stated that during these interviews he was asked to put “forward his own theories of how it had been committed” (Fair Trials 2013). This demonstrates the denial of the rights of the accused as a mentally ill suspect was taken advantage of and coerced into admitting guilt. This can be seen as coercion and a violation of Mallard’s right to not be compelled to admit guilt (ICCPR). Mallard was questioned continually by police, during which he was bullied and assaulted. This demonstrates the denial of justice, as the police investigation was deeply flawed and conducted unethically.

Background: Gary Ridgway remains one of the most prolific serial killers in history. He haunted police for years, earning the nickname “The Green River Killer” when investigators uncovered five of his victims near Green River. As a child Ridgway was determined to have a low IQ and was the target of abuse at school and at home. At only 16 years old, Ridgway exhibited violent behavior, stabbing a 6-year-old boy. Sexual Depravities: Mary Ridgway, Gary’s mother, often told her son inappropriate stories about her work in the men’s section of a department store.
