The Crucible Rhetorical Analysis

Arthur Miller wrote play The Crucible, which is based on a real story; play begins in a very interesting moment and ends in a very dramatic scene. At the time, when the play was written, witchcraft was a big thing for people. People used witchcraft to accuse other people and take their property, or because they just don’t like them. The story shows us, how do characters have changed from the beginning of the play and until the very end. The Proctor is one of the main characters in The Crucible.

First, Abby uses manipulation to get others to stick to the story of that they were just dancing. She does this by threating Betty and Mary Warren's life so that she will do what she says. Abby says, “… I will come to you in the black of some terrible night and I will bring a pointy black reckoning that will shudder you”

Despite the blood on his hands, he grieves not for the lives lost, but for the money he lacks after getting robbed by his niece. Parris’ reservation of tears for the amount of cash in his wallet over the lives of other beings truly emphasizes the amount of greed he contains. Parris acts so continuously for himself that a unit of money is valued more than lives of people. Parris’ crucible and reputation had its first floor break as his niece flees Salem and Parris lost a great sum of money to robbery. His accountability becomes less credible with each moment, his power nearing

John had an affair with Abigail when Elizabeth was sick, which made Abigail crazy for him. John forces Abigail to began accusing innocent people so that she would be able to finally accuse Elizabeth. When Proctor finds himself on trial, he reveals to the court that he knows Abigail. This was a very bad decision because now the court will find it hard to believe him. Proctor tries to tell the judges that Abigail wants to replace his wife.

Although, John Proctor wasn’t in a noble family, in the Salem community he was a respected man. He done the right thing in situations and people valued Proctor. Proctor is an admirable character in The Crucible. Proctor is a married man with three children.

In the drama, “The Crucible”, the story of the Salem Witch Trials takes place. Many are to blame for this tragedy and among them is Reverend Samuel Parris. Reverend Parris is to blame for making the trials worse and not helping at all to stop the situation simply because he cares for nothing other than his reputation with the community. He has been Revered for many towns before Salem and every time he goes to a new town, he ends up leaving because nobody likes him. He lied to the court to protect his name, he talks about nothing other than the damnation of hell in church, and he refuses anything other than golden candlesticks upon his lectern.

Abigail seeks vengeance after her affair with John Proctor. She is still madly obsessed with him. After John rejected her, she makes up lies in court in desperate attempt to get Goody Proctor hanged. She thinks if she gets rid of Goody Proctor she will be able to have John all to herself. One quote that supports this is “I do sir.

John Proctor, Deputy Governor Danforth, and Abigail Williams were worried about their reputation in town, and they were willing to commit many sins and harm others to prevent this from happening. To begin with, John Proctor was seen as a good citizen. He was well-respected among his neighbors and other people in Salem because of his upright morals. He had an affair with his old servant, Abigail Williams. He tried to keep this hidden from the people to keep his good name.

Although Parris does influence the court he is supposed to be a faithful man who tells nothing but the truth. However, he lives in constant fear of a single remark from a girl that could bring him down and all of his power. When Parris is trying to prevent Mary Warren from admitting to doing witchcraft at the beginning of the book he keeps interrupting causing Danforth to exclaim, “I pray you, Mr. Parris”(82). This is from the high judge, who is not worried about Parris, but more trying to get to the bottom of what's happening in Salem. At this point Parris is desperate as all he has done through the whole book is attempt to keep his power and clear his record.

John Proctor the Wrongly Accused In The Crucible there are many people condemned and hanged for witchcraft, one of these, John Proctor, I believe to be innocent. A man with as much integrity and honesty as John Proctor, could never perform the act of witchcraft. Undoubtedly he wasn’t a perfect man but no one ever is. As we are proved time and time again, John is an honest, hardworking man; who is haunted by his past misdeeds.

John fires back immediately telling Abby not to say a word about Elizabeth. Although John reassures her many times that he’s not with Abby anymore, she still worries that he’s having an affair because of the way Abby blushes around him at church. In the beginning of Act Two we witness a conversation between the Proctors which is an awkward conversation, where they share a kiss that has a “certain disappointment”

Abigail says, “’John- I am waitin’ for you every night”’ (Miller 149). Abigail loves John Proctor, but John no longer returns the feeling of love. Abigail says, “’ No one was naked”’ (Miller 144).
