Hello everyone. First of all I would like to thank you for presenting my ideas about our next school play. My idea for the next successful school play is ‘The Crucible’ by Arthur Miller. ‘The Crucible’ was written by Arthur Miller in 1953 during the McCarthy hearings of the time. The Crucible is set in 1692 and takes place in the theocratic Puritan town of Salem in which John Proctor, the protagonist, must struggle to admit to his crime of lechery with the evil seductress Abigail to stop her from lying to the court and taking lives. But why should you choose this play over any other? Well the key points are that its plot is dramatically appealing to the audience with it being based off a true story, it’s relevant to society with the irrational fears of today and it is also one of the cheapest in terms of costumes, backgrounds and general aesthetics. …show more content…

Dramatic appeal is created by the way Miller wrote the play. The tension increases with each passing moment reaching a climax in Act 4. The audience will be on the edge of their seats right through until the end of act 4 rather than the audience sitting dully through a traditional conclusion after the climax. Another reason it has dramatic appeal is because the play is based on a true story in 1662 Salem and is an allegory to the McCarthy trials of the 1950s. Some of the audience could even remember these trials and be able to relate to the play. The play also has a supernatural element for the younger generations with the placing of curses and the ‘witches sending their spirits out’. This will add to the already compelling desire to watch the play right until the end unlike some other plays in which people will be sneaking out towards the end after their child has said their lines. In this play that can’t happen as they won’t be able to leave because the tension and structure will keep reeling them back before they can get out the
