Colors are everywhere, just because green isn’t a primary color doesn’t mean it’s not important. Green can represent so much, goals, dreams, money, wealth, etc. Whether it’s an obvious example or a ‘read between the lines’ example, the color green has a meaning for all the main characters of The Great Gatsby. The color green represents Gatsby in a way that it’s his goal and dream. Across the lake, at the end of Daisy and Tom’s dock is a green light. “--he stretched out his arms toward the dark water in a curious way... I glanced seaward--and distinguished nothing except a single green light, minute and far away, that might have been the end of a dock”(33). Gatsby’s goal throughout the whole entire book is to achieve his dream, Daisy Buchanan. The green light shows the distance between Gatsby and Daisy both literally and figuratively. …show more content…
His dreams and goals were to unreal for Daisy to reach thus breaking poor Gatsby’s heart. “‘...Just tell him the truth--that you never loved him--and it’s all wiped out forever.’ ... ‘I can’t help what’s past.’ ... ‘I did love him once--but I loved you too’”(117-118). Gatsby now realizes that his dream may never come true, Daisy will not leave Tom and admit she never had feelings for him, after all, why would she marry Tom if she never loved him? Now the green light has turned into an unattainable dream. The color green isn’t just representing a light, it also represents money, greed, and wealth. In addition, dollar bills just so happen to be
In The Great Gatsby, the color green first appears in chapter one and then continues to appear throughout the novel. The most significant symbolism in this novel is color symbolism, the author chooses to express the characters lives in many different colors such as green and gold.
A great example is Jay Gatsby's dock, “He stretched out his arms toward the dark water in a curious way, and, far as I was from him, I could have sworn he was trembling. Involuntarily I glanced seaward – and distinguished nothing except a single green light, minute and far away, that might have been the end of a dock.” (Fitzgerald 7) The green light at the end of the dock can be represented as hope and the future to come. Green is a constant reoccurring color in the novel and also represents wealth, when the people who go to parties use a green ticket to enter.
The use of green in relation to Gatsby’s love for Daisy has a few interpretations. One possible meaning of the green light is that it represents hope and the future. At the end of the novel, Nick tells us that, “Gatsby believed in the green light, the orgastic future that year by year recedes before us” (182). Gatsby believed that the green light represented a future life with Daisy. Nick does not exactly refute this claim, but seems to have less hope in the future, saying that “It eluded us then, but that’s no matter” (182).
The colors yellow, green and red are directly associated with Jay Gatsby and help us develop a deeper understanding for his character. It is no secret that the most popular color Fitzgerald uses in his symbolism is the color green. Gatsby’s endgoal in all of his popularity and riches is to win over Daisy. His new money is all a charade to get back together with the love of his life.
The importance of the green symbolism is obvious by the end of the novel. By the end of the book you should know what green’s main purpose is, “… the light should by this time be clear: green, as the mixture of yellow and blue, is once again the tragic commingling of dream and reality” (Schneider). Green was not the only important color holding significance beyond itself. Even though green had many meanings dream was the main

Green is used to symbolize multiple things in the novel, but one of the most popular uses is to symbolize the American Dream, which is also connected with Daisy Buchanan. “Gatsby becomes a mysterious figure not introduced except as a figure in the distance stretching out his arms toward the green light, until over a quarter of the way into the novel.” (Hollister), this quote introduces the event where Jay Gatsby stands on his dock and looks across the water towards a green light that is shining behind the Buchanans house with the implication that he wants it, Daisy, the American Dream.
The green color was used to describe the level of wealth Gatsby had “he felt the hot green leather of the seat” (Fitzgerald 127). Gatsby also spent a lot money on parties every night just to get the attention of Daisy and let her know that he is now wealthy enough to support her. Gatsby was often seen just walking around the parties, not really enjoying them and he was considered to be new

Jay Gatsby and his false reality Jay Gatsby is mystical and ambiguous and the story of his past just does not seem to add up . The Great Gatsby, written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, takes place in the roaring of the twenties. One of the protagonists , Jay Gatsby, is living a life filled with just what the era stands for; glamour, parties and materialism, but also dishonesty. Nick Carraway, his neighbour and later on closest friend, learns the truth beneath the lies. He learns about Gatsby’s extraordinary obsession with Nick’s second cousin Daisy, and most importantly he learns to know the reason why Gatsby has created a false reality for himself.
Colors define how we see the world, and they can reflect our emotions, or mental state. This is reflected in The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, where colors are an extremely important, and also common, symbol. Throughout the text, important colors such as green, white, and blue are exemplified, with each having their own specific meanings. Green, the first of the colors, is closely associated with the green light at the end of Daisy’s harbor, and also symbolizes Gatsby’s close love of Daisy and the American Dream. White stands for purity, and innocence, and is generally wrote about Daisy as well.
Consequently, the idea of the green light may also represent the American Dream.
