The Cold Cut Combo When someone, or even more than one person, is murdered, most people are interested in who did it and why. What people do not usually think about is what caused the murderer to kill the person(s). The answer to this is simple, it all comes down to their own specific personality. People’s personalities are affected and developed by either their nature, or the way they were nurtured. In the book In Cold Blood by Truman Capote, Dick and Perry both have similar qualities but they were brought out by completely different causes. Nature vs nurture is a popular concept of whether a person’s actions are caused by who they are as a person or the way they were raised. For example, if a person was raised in an abusive and cruel family …show more content…
He had a very difficult and terrible childhood that had scarred him. As a young boy, Perry had a difficult childhood. His mom, who later became an alcoholic, left Perry’s dad, taking Perry and his siblings to San Francisco with her. Perry was then put in a Catholic orphanage, where he was abused by the cruel nuns working there. He then began travelling with his dad until they had reached Alaska, where they decided to live. Perry’s dad, like the nuns from the orphanage, was physically, mentally and most likely sexually abusive to his son. After years and years of torment, Perry left Alaska and was arrested for burglary. While in jail, Perry met Dick, who would later become his literal partner in crime. Once Dick and Perry have been arrested, a psychologist analyzed Perry, and the results prove that Perry’s life growing up is the reason for his actions. Capote states the psychologist's opinion, “‘Perry Smith shows definite signs of severe mental illness. His childhood, related to me and verified by portions of the prison records, was marked by brutality and lack of concern on the part of both parents” (296). It’s evident that the reason for his behavior was a result of how he was raised, Perry’s siblings also didn’t turn out fully normal. The fate of his brother and sisters is told by one of Perry’s sisters on page 183, “The eldest, the brother she loved had shot himself; Fern had fallen out of a window, or …show more content…
Dick was a popular athlete at in school. He grew up with very little exposure to violence, and his parents remained clueless to his tendencies until they were interviewed by K.B.I. agents after the Clutter family murder. Because Dick was raised in a stable home, there is no reason to suggest that he would turn out to be a murderer and a pedophile. Dick was violent and he was cruel. Even Perry knew that Dick was not a great guy, he had doubts about him throughout the novel. Though Perry mainly was concerned about the murder, he was also disgusted by and tried to stop Dick from molesting young girls. “Seducing pubescent girls, as he had done ‘eight or nine’ times in the last several years…” (Capote 201). Dick’s obsession with girls had nothing to do with how he was raised, he himself had never been sexually abused, and is something he continually did. It was in his nature to sexually harass children, just like it was in his nature to be compelled to murder. This impulse comes from the fact that Dick is power hungry, and feels inferior to others. He is very envious of anyone who had something he did not. An example of this is on page 201: Why should that sonofabitch have everything, while he had nothing? Why should that “big-shot bastard” have all the luck? With a knife in his hand, he, Dick, had power. Big-shot bastards like that had better be careful or he might “open them up and let a
The way Dick obtained his rights is clearly shown in the quote: “Wealth or social position he did not need to seek, for he was born to both,” (Chesnutt). This
Perry Smith grew up in a malformed family in which his mother had “‘soured her soul’, honed her tongue to the wickedest point” and his father cruelty left them and later took out of his anger on Perry. I have heard of tons of sweet little stories to praise the selflessness of the love from parents. Nevertheless, for Perry, his father threatens him by saying that “Perry, I’m the last thing living you’re ever gonna see’, which was just caused by a biscuit. As what Perry said about his father that he was “like a child”, Perry’s father had never truly realized his responsibility for the whole family and his life. When Perry described his helplessness after walk: “the lodge was dark, and all the doors were locked.
Capote explains that for a “full twenty minutes”, Dick was struggling to stay alive as he was hanging with a rope tied around his neck. Which is a very long time to be fighting for your life, the reporter even admitted that he could “hear
While Dick does eventually snap and go on a killing spree, he is able to keep calm for a very long time. It is shown that Dick’s religion is very important to him, and after Dick “would come out of his little basement room,” after reading the bible he seemed to have hope for something. While he did not necessarily have the biblical views that Mr. Sheppard wanted him to have, Dick remained obedient. That was of utmost importance to Mr. Sheppard. Without religion, Dick would not have put up with the unfair treatment.
Dick Prosser went crazy because of his constant hatred of being not equal to his counterparts around him. He was very obedient at the beginning of the story, but as the story progresses he begins to slowly break down until he goes crazy. The scene where the children find the gun shows that Dick has premeditated thoughts about taking the action he does. The readers of the story will never really know why he went crazy, but the best explanation is that buildup of negative emotion in
His parents died when he was young which would make the reader question how he came to posses the qualities at all. Who taught him to swim? What role models or motivations did he have to become enterprising? Dicks character is not pre-determined, but rather seems to be built as the novel progresses and certain characteristics become convenient to his
He had no control over this and is still mistreated. Dick was calling out how society treats people who are different from the societal
Dick believed it was for his “scams” he was doing on people in Nevada. Once they are in custody the officers start to question them about the night of the murder and the two “friends” turn on each other. Dick and Perry were both executed in 1965. “At the time not a soul was sleeping Holcomb heard them- four shotgun blasts that, all told, ended six human lives” (Capote 5). I now know that the other two lives that ended the night of the Clutter murder was Dick and
Although Perry is responsible for the murder of four innocent people, Perry’s actions do not reflect on who he is as a person because he is easily influenced, therefore; showing how easily people can be pressured into doing something they would not typically do. Dick, a violent, cold-hearted, manipulator, has molded Perry into the person he is today. As Perry is a follower, Dick has taken advantage of that by turning Perry into the cold-blooded killer he is today. Capote displays Dick’s manipulation of Perry through symbolism to make evident that while Perry did pull the trigger on four innocent people, although the fault does not entirely lay on him, as he was taken advantage of by Dick.
While Dick’s attempt to profit from Perry originates from a lie that Perry creates in order to gain Dick’s respect, the language that Capote uses to illustrate Dick’s exploitation does not leave room for excuses or sympathy. The tone indicates Dick has malicious intention in befriending Perry, which gives the readers a cynical impression of him. Furthermore, Dick is seen to be disregarding of the gravity of his crimes, especially as he replies to Perry’s comment, “I think there must be something wrong with us" (Capote 114) to commit the murder like they did, in which Dick replies, “Deal me out, baby, I'm a normal,” and continues to entertain the thought, “ But Perry—there
During his interrogation, Dick reflects on his actions and comes to the realization that “‘…the main reason I went to there was not to rob them but to rape the girl… I did not
(Page 108) In this quote, Dick uses Perry to hinder his own self- image. However, he often censures him for more irregular, and childish traits in comparison with which Dick considers himself to be normal. However, each man looks to one another for an oath of his own maturity. Capote uses a relating unrefined to when Dick and Perry talks in the book.
The bad childhood he had was the main causes of him becoming a serial
Dick is a very popular person. He is the person that brights up the room when he walks inThe idea of mental illness is common in Tender is the Night. Nicole is a wealthy schizophrenic. Nicole’s mental state is the reason for her marriage to Dick. But after years and years of being with Nicole, Dick feels controlled by her illness.
No longer able to make decisions for herself, Mary allows Moses to take charge of her mental capabilities, even putting her to bed and dressing her; Mary insisted that it is simple because “he has so little to do, he must earn his money” (214). Dick observes such behavior and deduces that the pair has had a sexual relationship. Ever the emasculated disappointment, Dick takes no action against Moses for the affair, but continues to let him care for Mary, stating, “Mary likes him” (204). This blunder ultimately ends Mary’s life, making Dick responsible for her untimely
