Throughout the book they battle the decision if they should pass or not. Clare is an example of how people sacrifice their cultural identity to gain privileges and advantages in society. Passing occurs when a person who is classified as a member of a racial group is accepted or perceived as a member of another racial group.

In the book To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Miss Caroline is treated poorly because some of her students think she is picking on a kid that comes from a poor family. It is the first day of first grade for Scout and Miss Caroline is her teacher. Miss Caroline's students do not realize that she is not trying to pick on a student named Walter when she tries to be nice by paying for his lunch but does not know that he would have to pay the money back. “You’re shamin’ him, Miss Caroline. In the book, Breakthrough, by Joyce Smith, the main protagonist, Joyce Smith is a very loyal character. The book starts when John, the main character, goes to a sleepover with his friends from his basketball team. When they woke up John saw Lake St. Louis is frozen and decides to go outside and walk on it. Shortly after, he and his friends broke through the ice and fell in. Luckily they got ahold of the ice and climbed out, except John was nowhere to be found, all of them started panicking and called 911.

Max Vandenburg impacted Liesel Meminger the most during her childhood because they were able to relate their lives and they shared interests. This made Liesel like being around Max, and she wanted the best for him because she knew the hard situation he was in. They looked out for each other like no other two characters in the book. Max’s background story was really hard. He lost his father as a child, he and his family were targeted by the Nazi’s because they are Jewish, and he has had to be cautious his whole life.
