The Chocolate War Mood Analysis

“My father, with tears in his eyes, tried to smile as one friend after another grasped his hand in a last farewell. Mama was overcome with grief. At last we were all in the wagons. The drivers cracked their whips. The oxen moved slowly forward and the long journey had begun.”

The mixed emotion is most likely due to frustration and guilt, the trauma of war scarring him as the memories of horrific events flood back. Random thoughts and emotions are thrown together in an attempt to convey multiple platforms of negativity, and the entirety of it being a single sentence, barely giving you enough time for air. Imagery is sprinkled in, adding scenes you can almost see as though it were reality. The horrific sight of death due to toxic gas exposure was described eerily specific, so much so that you might experience nausea reading it.

The movie Grand Illusion was very different from the novel All Quiet on the Western Front. The stories and settings were completely different, and had very little to do with each other. But even though the film and the book are completely different, they both give the same idea of the war being a horrible place, the movie had just approached the topic very mildly (in comparison to the book). The movie had avoided war on the battlefield, along with harsh conditions, and focused in a prison, instead. The novel however felt like a heavier topic, more emotional.

Author Erica Funkhouser’s speaker, the child of the farm laborer, sets the tone in “My Father’s Lunch,” through their narrative recount of the lunch traditions set by their father preceding the end of a hard days worth of work. The lunch hour was a reward that the children anticipated; “for now he was ours” (14). The children are pleased by the felicity of the lunch, describing the “old meal / with the patina of a dream” (38-39) and describing their sensibilities as “provisional peace” (45). Overall, the tone of the poem is one of a positive element, reinforced by gratitude.

This sentence delivers a depressing and pessimistic mood, using three different descriptions portray his father’s figure in Flynn’s life, and each of them reinforces themselves. The sentences are short and to the point, and some sentences are even fragmented. “Many fathers are gone. Some leave, some are left,” Flynn writes. (23)

Throughout the novel Tuesday’s With Morrie, the author, Mitch Albom, reflects on his Tuesday meetings with his old professor, now consumed with a terminal illness, and, using many rhetorical choices, reveals “The Meaning of Life,” which they discussed profusely and divided into several categories. Topics such as Death, Emotions, Aging, Money, Culture, and more are all discussed in their weekly conferences, Morrie passing his wisdom on to one of his favor students. And Albom, writing about their talks, uses numerous rhetoric devices to discuss this wisdom. As Morrie Schwartz, dying of ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), speaks with Albom, the two talk about Death.

Feelings of disconnection, confinement, and apathy are all moods that have surfaced in Brave New World. The way Huxley illustrates the system that which society operates is in such a way to make the reader feel an uneasy sense of disconnectedness. The way he chooses to describe the process of life is very distant and technical. This is demonstrated with the following quote, “From eighteen hundred bottles eighteen hundred carefully labelled infants were simultaneously sucking down their pint of pasteurized external secretion.” (128).

Erich Maria Remarque was a man who had lived through the terrors of war, serving since he was eighteen. His first-hand experience shines through the text in his famous war novel, All Quiet on the Western Front, which tells the life of young Paul Bäumer as he serves during World War 1. The book was, and still is, praised to be universal. The blatant show of brutality, and the characters’ questioning of politics and their own self often reaches into the hearts of the readers, regardless of who or where they are. Brutality and images of war are abundant in this book, giving the story a feeling of reality.

When people are traumatized by an event they are pushed to experience the five stages of grief. The “Gospel”, by Philip Levine and “the boy detective loses love”, by Sam Sax both use characters that are going through one of the stages of grief. Levine and Sax both explain the thoughts and process of what a person thinks when they go through these stages with imagery. Levine uses symbolism, a sad tone, and a set setting in “Gospel” to illustrate that grieving takes you into a depth of thoughts. Sax uses anaphoras, an aggressive tone, and an ambiguous setting to convey that grieving takes you into a tunnel of anger and rage.

In enduring these complex emotions, this section was the most remarkable part. One of the first apparent emotions the boy experiences with the death of his father is loneliness to make this section memorable. The boy expresses this sentiment when he stays with his father described as, “When he came back he knelt beside his father and held his cold hand and said his name over and over again,” (McCarthy 281). The definition of loneliness is, “sadness because one has no friends or company.”

From her internal thoughts and observations, the reader is given knowledge of the exact extent to which Ellie’s own mortality affects her thoughts, actions, and enjoyment of her whole life. The impact of the knowledge is best demonstrated when the reader is told, “Yet
