Keeping It Simple You would be hard pressed to find anyone who does not live under a rock that has not at least heard of Harry Potter, if not read a book or seen a movie. The series has become a cultural phenomenon that has people of all ages as loyal fans worldwide. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone was the first book in the series by J. K. Rowling that had to have some qualities to capture audiences. Sure, it is a book about magic and adventures, but there are plenty of books about magic in the fantasy genre that never will have the following that Harry Potter does, so what did Rowling do to make this a meaningful story? Rowling took mundane elements from everyday life and used them through allusion to create an unique and interesting world. It was through these simple objects such as the forest, broomsticks and mirrors that a deeper meaning could shine through. The Forbidden Forest is a forest near Hogwarts that is home to mythical creatures such as centaurs and unicorns. In this place, “secrets are kept and mysteries are unravelled.” …show more content…
Using mirrors as tools for magic comes from the Middle Ages when it was believed that wizards looked into mirrors to see the future. (Colbert 108) This does happen in later books, but in the first book, the use of the mirror is arguably much less mystical. Legend has it that whoever looks in the mirror will see their hearts’ deepest desire. It is known to drive the people who gaze into it insane. (Rowling 239) It is revealed that the mirror is a test of character for those who want to find the Stone because they would have to want the Stone more than anything else and not want to use it by Dumbledore. (Rowling 338) It is such a mundane item that the audience knows it is an allusion but does not see it as one. The audience instead only focuses on the use of the mirror, a means to find the Stone, and for Harry to see his
In the book Anthem by Ayn Rand, there are two places, the city and the uncharted forest. While being next to each other, they are both similar and different. There are many examples throughout the book about they are different.
The mirrors would also serve as a symbol of how individuals can reflect and learn from the past to create a better future. The comment highlights the theme of the novel,
During this time mirrors defined your social status due to their expensive price and short supply. To create a massive hall filled with mirrors during the 17th century, as Louis XIV did, was merely an ostentatious gesture to showcase his opulence and competence in being king. Seventeen mirrored arched windows faced seventeen arched mirrors that were merely made up of smaller mirrors. Since mirrors could only be built 28 inches high, 21 mirrors were assembled into arch form, meaning that the entire hall itself contained 357 mirrors total. Here King Louis XIV would pass through daily from his bedroom to the chapel.

Virginia Hamilton’s The House of Dies Drier is set in the 1950’s and placed in an aged house that was once an Underground Railroad station. A boy named Thomas has just moved into this strange house and is getting accustomed to the environment. Throughout the book Hamilton uses a literary element called foreshadowing. The House of Dies Drier uses foreshadowing to help one have a better understanding of the book, to cause one to think of how the story will unfold, and to add suspense.
Foreshadowing and Aha Moments in Harry Potter Foreshadowing and aha moments occur often in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. The first area in which foreshadowing occurs is in the exposition, when Harry, the protagonist, sees Albus Dumbledore in his Chocolate Frog card. The second place where there is a aha moment is in the rising action when Harry goes to the midnight duel with Draco, his enemy, and ends up in the third floor corridor with Fluffy and his friend sees a trapdoor which Fluffy guards. The first time foreshadowing occurs is when Harry,on the train, gets a chocolate Frog from the trolley and he gets Dumbledore as his card.
Medieval mirrors themselves were markedly different than the smooth glass reflectors common today, with most of the mirrors Dante would have had access to more closely resembling polished pieces of metal that gave distorted reflections rather than perfectly clear ones (Miller 264). In contrast, Beatrice’s proposed three mirrors experiment is meant to bring clarity and not distortion to Dante’s question about the dark spots on the moon. This doubling of meaning is characteristic of mirrors
She titled that novel, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. That next year, in 1998, her novel came to the United States and renamed it to Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. (J.K. Rowling) Little did J.K. Rowling know that it would become an overnight success bringing in tons of money for her. After all the hard work and negativity, she was proud her work made it into something she never thought was possible.
I have chosen this book because I have heard many friends saying that the Harry Potter series is worth to read. Furthermore, I have not really read through the book before, instead I just watched the movies. So, I choose this book eventually as this is the very first book of the whole series. After reading, I found out the book is, indeed very interesting, just like how my friends have described it; the book is worth to read. The most important thing that makes it worth to read is that it has parts which the movie has cut them, thus making the book so special.
