There are a lot of American comic heroes, but how can describe a characteristic of a hero. However, have you ever met a hero? Stephen Crane published one of ironic hero story which is “A Mystery of Heroism.” This short story questions how can heroism be defined. Also, this is about one of the young man named Fred Collins who is in the middle of the meadow where is a war front, surrounded by the noise of guns and shouts. Collins is a member of A company, and they are in not much dangerous place. This story starts with a Collins self-centeredness talk. And in the end, Collins mind is changed. In the story, Fred Collins is a hero because even after he feels fear, he takes risks, and this behavior is true heroism. And Collins has two types of heroism eager and reluctant.

Collins did not mention to be this hero, but during the story he becomes. Reluctant heroes have no motivation to be a hero, but they become a hero during do their duty. Reluctant heroes’ characteristics are less self-confident, works well with others and respectful of authority. In the story, Collins runs back for dying officer to drinks water, and this behavior is based on the reluctant heroism. According to profiling the heroic leader, they said, reluctant heroes take the actions “rely on loyalty and values other than a propensity for excitement and risk” (Wansink teal. 6). Collins can abandon the dying officer, or he has not responded for bringing back the bucket of water to company’s mean members he can just drink water for himself. However, he pays attention to the officer and means members. He does not notice this behavior is based on heroism, but suddenly he becomes a hero for the dying

There are many traits that heroes can demonstrate in stories. The two stories The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain, and “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell both have heros in them. Connell’s story portrays a hero named Rainsford, who crosses a mysterious island where humans are hunted for fun, and he himself has to run for his life. Twain’s book follows a young boy named Huck, who has run away from his father, and his older friend Jim, who is a runaway slave. Jim is more of a hero because he is more self-sacrificing, unafraid of negative consequences, and more determined.

Fred Collins is not a hero and does not fit into what a hero needs to be. Though he is not a hero he was able to complete a heroic act. The initial action of getting the water for himself and his companions was futile for the fact that once the water arrived safely it was spilled. But this is not the act in question, his heroic act was giving a dying man his last drink. How a person can perform a heroic act but not be a hero perplexing, and thus may be the mystery of heroism.
