For many centuries, women and men were not treated equally. After the Civil War, women had many essential successes that helped them earn respect. Women have tried very hard to get to the point where they can be treated with the same respect as men. As of today, women are still not equal to men. Women face violence, discrimination, and barriers in society.

The 1920 's is remembered and referred to as the "Jazz Age," or the "Era of the Lost Generation," which had its share of cultural conflicts between many groups and organizations. During the war there was multiple types of jobs for a women and roles that a women had to play. Women were soldiers, nurses, spies, abolitionist, promoters, etc anything that help benefit the war. Women is never really seen as a big part of history due to the fact that women was always get ran over by men and family members because of their gender and what they was seen for. Women's issues suddenly became so prominent in American culture because things were changing. People were forming new opinions and women saw an opportunity. In the 1800's transcendentalism came into the picture. Transcendentalism was an intellectual movement led by Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau (Henretta, G-13). They believed that they needed to examine individuality and self reliance closely.

In 1860 women were mistreated, especially black women. Women in the 1800s were treated unfairly compared to white men. Men saw women as angelic creatures and that they shouldn't be/ capable of being voters, legislators, free traders, divines, physicians, and lawyers. From the 1800’s to the 20th century, women had gained a lot more independence than they had before. In the year 1777 when voting started to become more relevant, women were decided not to be allowed to be apart of voting, unlike now in the 21st century where women are allowed to vote. From the beginning of the 18th century, women were discriminated against until the middle of the 18th century. After the mid-1750’s, women started to gain more ground on rights and things that they were more freely allowed to do. Women slowly started to gain more ground on things to do such as being guaranteed equal pay starting from the year 1872 to current present time.

In the nineteenth century many changes were happening in American. American just twenty-four years before got their freedom from Great Britain. This freedom helped shaped the country in the nineteenth century to what was known as the Market Revolution. Market Revolution shifted from self sufficient farms and communities to commercial farms and manufacturing interests. The Market Revolution reshaped the economy by the Industrial, the Transportation, Communication Revolution as well as the regional differences in America and the shift in gender roles in the nineteenth century.

The context of the changing roles of women between the periods of 1890-1920 and 1960-1980 are voting rights and equal pay in the workplace. Women's roles have changed a lot over the many years women have gone from being housewives to working in the factories. The roles of women changed from 1890-1920 to 1960-1980 and one of the big changes from 1890 to 1980 is women's voting rights because women couldn't vote in 1890 but they could in 1980. Another one is women in the workforce because in 1890 women were expected to provide for their homes and not work but by 1980 most women worked.

Thus, it is necessary to conclude that women have always played an important role in the development of history. Women’s battle for voting rights was specifically led by Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and Alice Paul. These women devoted most of their life to create a foundation which we live upon today. Women’s struggles lasted many decades until they finally achieved some equality under the 19th amendment.

The period of time from 1890 to 1925 was a revolutionary time for women in America. From the beginning of the United States the role of women was always ambiguous. Women were seen as necessary for the survival of the colonies but not equal to men in any way. However, over time the role of women has evolved. The era of 1890 to 1925 included the Gilded Age, Progressive Movement, and the first World War and these events changed the role of women in American forever.

Life in the 21st century has drastically changed during the past 100 years. The role women play in our society to this day, is different than the role women played in the 1900's. In the Western and Eastern countries, women were treated as objects and did not have a right to voice their opinion, often times women were mistreated by their own husbands. At that time nothing was done about it to prevent these occurrences because there were no laws that protected women against physical abuse. For example, although Okonkwo's behavior was aggressive and misogynistic, by western standards, it was socially acceptable in his village.

A historian by the name of Ed Ayers once said “The exploitative natures of women’s work throughout history has been enormous.” I believe that this statement is true because after looking at history it shows that there were so many things that they had to overcome to get to the rights that they have today. Women during the 1700’s and 1800’s were challenged with expressing themselves in a social system that refused to grant women the right to express their views. Many events during these centuries which included things such as social and political movements that increased attention to women's issues like education reform. By the end of the 1800’s women were finally able to speak out against the injustices aimed at them.

Women. Women’s involvement in the working world have contributed to many items that would be missing from the world today; if they had not been allowed to work.. Women have struggled with sexism in the workplace since before they were even given the chance to try to work. They were taught from a young age that their job was to provide children, cook, and clean for their husbands, while the husband worked and provided the money. What men did not know however was that women were capable of so much more(Jewell, Hannah).

Throughout early history, women were always expected to do certain things and act a certain way. It was a big struggle for them to receive the respect they deserved, especially in certain fields that were majority men. Although women were just as qualified as men, being a woman was enough for many people to not pay attention to their ability or accomplishments. It is no secret the inequality that women faced and still face in current generations. Unfortunately women were not accepted right way but there was countless amazing women that never gave up the fight and paved the road for women today.
