A concussion is a tramatic brain injury that alters the way your brain function. Although the effects are usually temporary the effects can be delayed for hours or days and can last days to months. The effects include: headaches, and problems with concentration, memory loss, balance and coordination. Concussions are usually caused caused by a blow to the head or neck or upper part of the body. The cause of a concussion can be from a contact sport, a car accident, or even a kid falling on a playground.

Concussions are a problem. They are a life changing injury, which have been around for a very long time but not a lot of people take them serious. This happens because we have not known about them for that long and a lot of people have a misconception of what a concussion is. Concussions are a traumatic brain injury that alters the way your brain functions (M.C.S). Most of the time it makes the person who got the concussion feel very disoriented and also gives out constant headaches.

Concussions are generally related to a direct impact to the head that is generally from a collision, a fall or being hit by an object (Seifert, 2013). However, it is also important to note that a concussion can also take place outside of sports, meaning it can happen to anybody. For instance, there have been incidents where a person tripped while running, fell, and the impact of their head’s contact with the ground caused a concussion. Or, in a car accident many front-seat passengers, or even the driver, have slammed their heads against the dashboard/steering wheel, also possibly resulting in a concussion. Concussions when treated can be healed in a timely manner. Unfortunately, throughout history, there has been a tendency for people to overlook a concussion as a serious injury, therefore, making it more problematic than it already is.

Sports have been around for a long time and so have these diseases that can end your life or complicate them. Rules are being more inforced as of now due to serious brain disease that cause death to those who suffer concussions on the field. The sports industry tried changing rules to the games to prevent certain disease such as ALS and CTE but changing the rules can come out to worse results as in fracturing other body parts that can cause the player to stop playing for some time or even forever which can cause an end to their careers. Changing certain rules may prevent certain conflicts but can start other conflicts which can be more risky for the athlete. When your child begins to play a sport there is always a risk for injury especially if they fall in love with football their chances of getting a head related injury are very high. From the years 2001 to 2009 there has been an incredible amount of head related sport injuries that go through the emergency room and most are diagnosed with a concussion. Michael C. Miller from Harvard University gave a perfect description of what happens to the brain when a collision occurs. His words are, “The brain accelerates very quickly, then decelerates just as quickly as it bangs into the skull. Nerve cells get stretched, connections between nerve cells get disrupted or sheared” (Miller, 2010, p. 8). Short-term effects dealing with concussions may lead to headaches, nausea, difficulty and/or inability to focus, irritability, and impaired memory.

Hard hits to a player's head can cause his or her brain to move in different ways which can cause brain bruising or bleeding. A hard hit to a player’s forehead causes the brain to accelerate in a back and forth motion that can make a player feel nauseous or unstable. If the hit is focussed in the left or right side of a player's forehead it can cause the brain to move in a twisting motion which will leave the player light headed and with a headache.
