Catholic Reformation The Catholic Reformation which is also known as Counter Reformation or Catholic Revival was the time of Catholic resurrection which began in response to Protestant Reformation, initiated with Council of Trent (1545–1563) and summing up at the close of the Thirty Year’s War (1648) Started to safe the power, impact and material wealth enjoyed by the Catholic Church and to present a theological and material challenge to Reformation. It is mostly thought to have started with the publication of the Ninety Five Theses by Martin Luther in 1517. Martin Luther Martin Luther was a professor of theology, composer priest and a monk. He used to oppose many teachings and sayings of the Roman Catholic Church. His “95 Theses,” which was based on two central beliefs that the Bible is the central religious authority and that humans may reach salvation only by their faith and not by their deeds was to spark the Protestant Reformation. Although these ideas had been presented before, Martin Luther codified them at a moment in history ripe for religious reformation. The Catholic Church was ever after divided, and the Protestantism that soon emerged was shaped by Luther’s ideas. His writings changed the course of religious and cultural history in the West.

The person that had the most responsibility for this rebellion is Martin Luther. People agreed with his beliefs against the catholic church and they followed him. He then continued with the translation of the old testament and had it printed by 1534 (textbook).

The counter-reformation was introduced in Europe to weaken the Protestant Reformation and rebuild the power of the Catholic Church through education, clergy reform, and spreading of the Catholic faith. In order for the Roman Catholic Church to regain its power, the R.C.C. had created laws for priests with the help of the Council of Trent and Loyola.

On All Saints Day, October 10th, 1517, Martin Luther wrote a lengthy letter named as “The Ninety-Five Theses” to the Bishop Albert of Mainz (“Martin Luther”). This letter stated that the Bible is the central authority of the Protestant religion and one can attain salvation by their loyal faith to God. “The Ninety-Five Theses” letter became a huge impact for the Protestant Reformation, and it was one of the major reasons why this religion was spread around Europe; however, it also focused on practices from Catholic churches about baptism and absolution (“Martin Luther”). The Protestants used the letter to form their ideas about God and to start their own church denominations. In addition, Protestantism helped a lot during this movement because its belief is that God saved everyone by His faith to Jesus Christ, himself.

Instead, however, he ignited criticism against the church and placed himself at the front line of reformation. The Archbishop of Mainz forwarded the Ninety-Five Theses to Rome for review in 1517.
