The Burial at Thebes is an Irish play based on the tragedy of Antigone. This play stands today as the protection of basic human rights and the tough situations that we are currently facing. The Goode Theatre’s presentation of The Burial at Thebes, by Steve Earle was a fascinating, mix of contemporary American and ancient Greek version of the play. The director’s choice of costumes, lighting, stage design, and amazing sound affects throughout the play made it very entertaining to watch. Despite the original script being very stretched out and dry I had no problems following along.
I would say the director’s overall creative interpretation of The Burial at Thebes was well thought out. As a director, you oversee everything and it’s your job to make sure the quality and the fulfillment of the play. The choice of the actors could have been chosen

Lighting can change the feel of a production, also being able to set the mood as well. In the Burial at Thebes the lighting was mostly the same throughout, the only time it changed is when at the beginning, it was pitch black to start the play off and during the play the lights cut off maybe once or twice. Regardless off not have a lot of light change the lightning was just enough for the mood of the play. The way the light was hitting the props were in the right places. I will say as a lightning designer it Is very important to make smooth transitions when changing the lights so it’s not even noticed by the audience so maybe I missed a few changes but then that means they did an excellent job. Moving on to the sound designer, the job of providing realism to the theatre was met. Before the play even started there was an offstage battle going on. You knew it was a battle because there was shouting, gun shots and clashing of weapons. There was wisp of air indicating the battle was over and that’s when the play was
The Burial at Thebes, a version of Sophocles’ Antigone written by Seamus Heaney, is a play about newly appointed King Creon, who brands the brother of his niece Antigone a traitor and mandates that his body remains unburied, which sparks the overall conflict in the play. In his first speech that this essay will be focusing on, Creon attempts to assert his newfound authority and justify his command denying Polyneices a burial. Creon's clever use of rhetorical devices such as ethos, logos and pathos throughout his speech, created an atmosphere for him to be able to not only establish himself as head of state in the eyes of his audience, but also managed to persuade them to accept his decision regarding Eteocles and Polyneices. Creon begins
The scenery was weird when I first came in maybe because I wasn 't expecting to see boobs been drawn on trees and also penis on trees. Everything went well with what was going on in the stage. The outside venue was nice not like some others I 've been to. The play was interesting and really funny, well the actors made it funny. The actors would interact with the audience.
However, this person that is not to be buried is Polyneices, brother of Antigone. She is so enraged with the fact that her brother will not be granted passage to the gods, she rebels. She fights the law Creon made, standing by the fact that everyone deserves a proper burial. Antigone wins in the end and Polyneices is buried, even at the cost of her own life. Theme
In the play Antigone, written by Sophocles, burial customs of the ancient Greeks play an extensive role. The women of the family perform the burial rites, and believed that if their distinct methods were not followed, the soul is destined to suffer between worlds until the correct rites were performed. Antigone, the sister of Polynices and Eteocles, is aware of this and is not going to stand by and let her brother, Polynices, linger between worlds in pain, after being killed by Eteocles. With her ambition and determination she does the deed, and of doing so she follows the god's laws, but breaks Creon’s laws in the midst of it. Creon is also aware of the burial rites but still decides, through his stubbornness, that Polynices shall not be performed these rites, because of his actions against Thebes.
Hello again from Thebes Weekly! Let’s reflect on two brothers we have lost previously that changed the course of time. Eteocles, king of Thebes fought to the death with his own brother, Polynices! Eteocles’ burial was held shortly after in honor of him and the gods. But because of Polynices’ act of treason, we have learned that there is no burial scheduled for him.
In the play, Antigone, daughter of Oedipus learns about the death of her two brothers (Eteocles and Polynices).Creon, the new king of Thebes passed a decree to the city on the burial of the two brothers. In the decree, Creon declares that Eteocles body should be buried with honor and fame for his courage of saving the city from the enemy. Whiles Polynices body is left unburied and rotting for beasts to feed on because he came to destroy the city and enslave the people. Antigone defies Creon 's decree, buries Polynices body and gets caught. Creon imprisons her
In the play Antigone by Sophocles the Greek gods play a very important role. Discussion of the gods is present throughout the entirety of the play. Essentially the gods drive the plot of Antigone. The play is about a girl, Antigone, who lives in Thebes Greece. She is the niece of the king Creon.
The beginning of the film is written out like the play but offers time and visuals for the reader to appreciate the scenes being shown. Kurzel adds the burial scene to start the film but there is no speaking among the characters, only music being played and also in the battle scene that is shown right after. I think that the silence between characters in these two scenes is what makes them so great. The battle scene is magnified in the film because of the music and seeing all of the gore and debris, like mud and swords being swung in super slow motion adds tension and really opens the viewers eyes as to how simple changes or add-ons can change the whole experience or mood of the piece.
The productions of this play were successful through stage design, lighting crewing, and acting. Those three aspects made the quality of the play stand out to me, as an audience member. The production of the set design of the play was a good effort. The set design for the play staging aims for the sweet spot between feeding adult nostalgia and satisfying a new generation of children.
The Burial Rights of a Traitor Both in fiction and in present day reality, controversies regarding the treatment of enemies and traitors exist on a large scale. Whether the person betrayed his family and friends or whether she broke the king’s law, there are consequences to actions. The specific consequences differ according to an individual’s worldview and his or her position in society. Such arguments are present in an ancient Greek drama, Sophocles’ play Antigone (442 BCE), and were debated in 2013 regarding the burial of a suspected terrorist bomber, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, in Boston, Massachusetts. In Antigone, the problem arises when Antigone attempts to bury her brother, Polyneices, who King Creon had declared as unworthy of burial.
In Sophocles’ play Antigone, Antigone is punished for burying her dead brother’s body by being buried alive. Antigone gives an emotional speech in which she laments the loss of her youth and her future of marriage and motherhood. In this speech, she employs rhetorical devices like pathos, foreshadowing and extended metaphor. In an attempt to coerce Creon to refrain from burying herself alive, Antigone utilizes the rhetorical device, pathos.
The archaic play, Antigone, effectively expresses and communicates its ideas of Greek ideology and mythology. Antigone is the third, commonly referred as a tragedy, of three Theban plays and is a continuation of Oedipus at Colonus. The play starts off with Antigone and her sister deciding to return to Thebes to help their brothers, Eteocles and Polyneices, avoid the prophecy which predicts they will kill each other in battle for the throne of Thebes. Upon Antigone’s arrival in Thebes, news reaches Antigone that both of her brothers are dead. Eteocles has been given a proper burial while Polyneices has been named a traitor to the country.
The colors and lighting are very unchanging much like the town Endora. The only exception is when there are strong emotions within the film. There is a warm glow of lighting by the sunlight or fire whenever there is a time of love, be it brotherly or in a romantic way. During the melancholy times of the story, the lighting is either dim when it relates to death, but when a character is feels lost in their emotions the director
Antigone wants her brother to receive proper burial rites in the play “Antigone”, written by Sophocles. In the lead up to the play, two brothers fight till death in order to receive the beloved power over Thebes. In the dual between the two brothers, Polyneices met fatality while bringing mischief upon the city of Thebes. Consequently, the King, Creon, declared that Polyneices’s proper burial rites should be revoked. Antigone was driven by tradition and her family values to bury her deceased brother; thus forthe, she was readily willing to suffer her punishment.
The drama Antigone places the culture of Greece on display by showcasing the many values that this culture held in reverence, including remaining loyal to family, honoring the dead, and honoring the gods. In Sophocles’ renowned drama entitled Antigone, one of the main values that Antigone chooses to honor is loyalty to family, even when that means that she has to forgo loyalty to her city and community. Even though her uncle the king, Kreon, forbade anyone to bury Polyneikes’ body because he had been on the opposing side in the battle, Antigone felt a duty to her brother to bury him. When speaking with her sister, Antigone says that Kreon’s command “…threatens our loved ones / as if they were our enemies” (Antigone 14-15).
