Why did the Black Death kill so many people in the 14th century? The plague was the most devastating disease in world history. There were three types of the Plague which included the bubonic, septicaemic and the pneumonic plague. Fleas living on rats that came from Asia on a trade ship spread the bubonic plague, the septicaemic plague is created by the entrance of bacteria from their multiplying place into the blood vessels. There are two different forms of pneumonic pest.

The Black Death did not just cause death; it caused panic and destroyed the economy, the family structure, and so much more. The Black Death traveled as an invisible invader across waters. In 1346, travelers reported millions of deaths across China, central Asia and the Middle East (Worlds, 418). Just like the travelers who carried it, the disease moved with them “by fleas to city rats and other animals, including humans” as it spread (Worlds, 418). The Black Death killed so many people in some cities that more than half the population fell victim to this epidemic (Worlds, 418).

The Black Death was so devastating to Europe because of the population change and the effects it had on people. The Black Death changed many people’s lives. For example, most of the population decreased, which is sad because their lives are gone. It affected Spain, France, and Italy in 1348; Barbaria, and England in 1349; and Poland in 1350.

To understand how that happened better, we first have to learn a bit more about the Black Death. The Black Death, or bubonic plague, was a disease that came from bacterias in rats. Fleas caused the spread of it by getting the disease from rats, and infecting humans. The disease originated in China, and spread mostly through trade routes.

The Bubonic Plague (Black Death) came to the eastern Mediterranean along the shipping routs. It reached Italy in spring of 1348. By the time the disease spread between 25% and 50% of Europes population had died (document 1, (Source: EyeWitnesstoHistory.com) the Bubonic Plague was spread because in this time there was not any place to put garbage and wast products like we have today, so they would just leave the trash/wast anywhere and everywhere and the result of this would bring rats and many other animals, and with these animals they had fleas and eventually the fleas would get to the people and the humans would get sick and spread it to everyone. Some symptoms of the Bubonic Plague were large swelling lumps which they called "buboes" sizing

The Black Death was three detrimental plagues that began in Mongolia, then swept across the Europe in the 1300’s, being the result of great famines that weakened Europe’s people. The plague was carried by fleas that were carried on rats, making colonists, and the poor more susceptible to the disease. It changed society by not only diminishing the population but also made the people skeptical of the Jews as if it was their doings. What made the plague so significant was how it wasn’t just amongst the poor; royalty, priests, armies, and the poor were all dying. Giovanni Boccaccio witnessed the plague from the city of Florence in Italy, and how it was a “deadly pestilence” (Plague, from the Decameron)

The Bubonic Plague is commonly referred to as the Black Death or the Black Plague. The plague lived through the oriental rat flea, or Xenopsylla cheopis. These fleas feed on blood and that is how they transmit the infection. The Black Death was one of the worst pandemics in human history. It traveled through Europe for over three years.

The Black Death was a disease which spread across Europe in the fourteen century, killing a great part of its population, and making the illness the worst natural disaster on the European continent. The Bubonic Plague, or Black Death, was caused by a bacteria which spread through infected fleas living on rats (Mulch). After the rat died from the bacteria, the fleas would turn to people infecting them instead since the rats lived in the villages and towns especially on the ships (Fiero). After three days of incubation the illness spread to the lymph nodes, swelling into blisters commonly in the armpit, neck, and groin area (Mulch). People infected died five days after incubation of the illness.

According to Brittanica, in the article named, “Black Death”, the Black Death is described to be, “The Black Death is widely believed to have been the result of plague, caused by infection with the bacterium Yersinia pestis.” (Britannica, “Black Death”) For one to get infected by this bacterium, they must be bitten by either a flea that carries the disease or handling an animal who carries the disease. (CDC, “Plague”) For a plague that primarily is known for the outbreak in medieval europe, the Black Death actually originates from China.

The Black Death started during the Middle Ages in the 14th Century and killed about 150 million people in Central Asia. The epidemic originated from fleas and rats. The symptoms started out as egg shaped swellings in groin and armpit and ended up as dark blotches and swellings on the body. The people believed that the plague came from dead bodies and the victim’s clothing. According to the rulers of Pistoia, any old imported cloth was to be burned and corpses were not permitted to enter within the city (Doc 2).

During the late 1340s the standards of living for the peasants began to increase. According to Routt, many peasants were able to afford things that they were not able to before due to the surplus and the plummet of the prices of goods. Since many of the workers died because of the Black Death, many employers were left without workers. These employers grudgingly employed the peasants since they were the only people left who were not infected and who did not have jobs. The Black Death had a profound effect agriculture.

The Black Death was caused by various reasons, non-religious and religious. The disease in Europe, was said to be caused by, miasma (impure air) carried by warm southern winds, the March 20, 1345, conjunction of Saturn, Jupiter, and Mars, excessive clothing or outrageous fashion, and in the near east, caused by, miasma due to wind carrying the stench of Mongol bodies from Crimea,

A When the Black Death strikes Europe, this continent was at a time of economic downturn, following a frank feudal system in descent and a economy in very poor condition as a result of frequent crop failures and significant overcrowding. The Bubonic plague or black Death, native pest of China, reaches Europe via Italy by the year 1343, in a fleet of Italian commercial ships. Some consequences of The Black Death include economic, social and political issues. The economy went bad as a result of the reduction of the workforce and the massive reduction of crops. the european society was destroyed but but for the crown there was a high income.
