After royal authority collapsed during the Revolution, provincial congresses and bore power in each of the former colonies. In May of 1776, the Congress called on the colonies to form new state governments. Republicans limited political rights to white male property owners. 60 to 80 percent of adult white men owned property. The Revolution did not challenge exclusion of women from politics. Some women in New Jersey enjoyed suffrage, or the right to vote. Revolutionary principles sparked some people to challenge slavery. More than 50,000 slaves gained freedom as results. In 1786, Daniel Shays, like other farmers, was with his inability to pay high debts. So, out of anger, formed a group of farmers who were frustrated too. The national government didn’t have a right or means to raise any army, so the governor of Massachusett formed an army on his own. New laws were drafted, which offered welcome relief to all of the debtors. But in the end, the rebellion helped highlight issues with the articles of confederation.
Congress did not possess the ability to tax and states were not willing to give money to support the government of their own free will. Congress did not have the ability to regulate exchange of business between foreign countries or between the states. This combined with each state printing its own form of money led to an extremely unstable economy. Congress quickly realized that an executive branch was needed in order to inforce the acts they passed; unfortunately it may have been realized too late. In western Massachusetts between 1786 and 1787 a slew of protests arose from local farmers who were opposed to the state and local enforcement of tax collections and judgments for debt.

Imagine that you are a land owner in the late 1700’s and the king has just put out a new taxes and they are more than you can afford to pay. Would you just try and pay it or would you stand up for yourself and fight for your rights? When it comes to being an American the revolutionist definitely had the right idea of what it took to be an American. According to the literature studied, the revolutionists had the strongest argument for what is meant to be an American because they fought for what they believed in and they wanted to be free from the king.

Colonies fought and won a war against Britain to declare their independence. In the eighteenth century, being an American meant having a government that changes and evolves over time.
