The genius that shaped humanity and the hero that won his side in World War ll, meet Alan Turing. He was born in 1912 in London. His dad was in the British Civil service in India. He and his brother moved to live in foster households away from their parents because their mom felt that her children being in India was an environment unsuitable for them. Right away he had a hard life because of this. But he still managed to be successful. He was so successful that he played an essential part in shaping the world into what it is today. To honor this, Alan Turing should be the next inspirational face on the postcard stamp because of his life-changing inventions, work in World War ll, and perseverance.

As taught in history all around the globe, Germany and the Nazis lost World War ll, “Turing played a key role in this, inventing – along with fellow code-breaker Gordon Welchman – a machine known as the Bombe. This device helped to significantly reduce the work of the code-breakers. From mid-1940, German Air Force signals were being read at Bletchley and the intelligence gained from them was helping the war effort”(Imperial War Museum). The Enigma machine was one of the key reasons Germany was so powerful during World War II. They had a way of communication that nobody except themselves could understand. The Bombe considered Alan Turing’s contribution to World War ll, allowed Britain and their allies to decipher the Enigma Code and know the Germans' plans precisely making this an extremely important discovery. The Bombe “helped make the decryption work at Bletchley Park a success and played a substantial role in the eventual victory of the Allies”(Harvard). Alan Turing changed the tide of the war. His work won his country and their allies World War ll. Not only did the Bombe help win the war but “shortened the war by two years and saved 14 million lives”(Knight). Alan Turing was the unsung hero of this miraculous finish to World War ll. One of the hardships was that he didn’t have the grades that someone would expect from the genius he turned out to be. In fact “He got bad grades and frustrated his teachers” (Jacobson 1). His bad grades continued for the entirety of his childhood. He was even almost stopped from taking the School Certificate Exam because of his bad grades. But, he didn’t let that define his life. He worked hard and ended up becoming a genius that changed the world. This by itself would be a story for everyone to draw inspiration from but, he was also gay, and had to face society for being so. At one point he was even accused and arrested for his homosexuality since it was a crime back then. He didn’t even try to deny it. In fact “He didn’t keep his sexuality a secret among friends”(Jacobson 1). He accepted that he was gay and lived with it without letting it stop him from making his discoveries. On top of all of this, “He stuttered when talking”(Jacobson 1). A necessary skill for being successful is to have good communication. Whether it is talking to co-workers or taking an interview, they need to be able to talk in a fluent professional way.
