Heinrich introduces different types of rhetoric used to persuade people, Heinrich cites examples of these to further explain his the different types of rhetoric. Many people have a certain opinion when it comes to their standing on tattoos, whether they see them as beautiful pieces of art, or body mutilation, everyone subscribes to a different belief. Many people who see teenagers, believe that these teens are “troubled”, or impulsive and impressionable, which at that point in the brain’s development that may be true, but they never consider that maybe that teen is ready, or is willing to commit to the tattoo simply because it is something that has importance to them. Andres Martin, a child psychiatrist, wrote an article in a 2000 edition of the magazine “Reclaiming Our Children and Youth” about teenagers and tattoos, where he directly addresses the reasons that would support the ideas behind teens getting tattoos. Grant Pendergraft Mrs. Erwin English II 20 January 2023 Jay Heinrichs is Very Good at Arguing Thank You for Arguing, by Jay Heinrichs, but more specifically, his section Remember Aristotle’s definition of virtue: A matter of character, concerned with choice, lying in a mean, is a persuasive essay on implementing rhetoric back into the curriculums of schools. He believes that if the population was taught rhetoric, the community would change for the better. He believes that when rhetoric is introduced into society, we will be less susceptible to tricks that currently fool us. This includes everything from candy bar ads, to American politics.
The titles I enjoyed most in the past year that were required included "How to Read Literature Like a Professor" by Thomas Foster, which analyzed how to go beyond the surface of literature. "Mythology: Timeless Tales of Gods and Heroes" by Edith Hamilton condensed the majority of mythology into one piece, aiding in the identification of allusions in other works that I have read. Another piece I surprisingly enjoyed to read was the piece "Everything's an Argument" by Andrea Lunsford, which explained the different fundamental pieces of arguments and how an effective argument is developed. I enjoyed these three readings the most during the past year because they went beyond the usual school reading assignment. Each of these provide a new tool
In the Introduction/Part One of Thank You For Arguing by Jay Heinrichs, the author uses real-life examples to inform and entertain the reader about the significance of arguing in society and how to do it efficiently. In order to effectively argue, Jay Heinrichs explains that the individual must first know what their purpose or goal is. An effective argument results in action or choices and by discovering what the speaker wants out of an argument, he/she can form the argument accordingly. Furthermore, Heinrichs states that any issue involving persuasion can fit into the categories: blame, values, and choice. Blame issues should be addressed in the past tense and is named by Aristotle as “forensic” rhetoric because it deals with issues of justice in the courtroom.

Every writer has a goal in mind when writing. For some that goal is to entertain, for others, it’s to educate. When writing, authors have many tools or tricks they use. One of the more common tools is rhetoric. There are three main components of a good rhetoric argument, ethos, pathos, and logos.
If you perceive carefully, you will recognize it. Further, you can find that it deeply influences your writing. To illustrate, reading a great number of rhetoric contents allows you to accumulate the knowledge of writing. It also serves as a great training for the writer to use the strategies, such as proving with the confirmed recourse, in order to make one become a credible writer. • Describe a recent writing experience or activity where you used rhetoric to effectively convey a message to a specific audience?
Genre Throughout the different texts we analyzed in the first half of the quarter, we looked at the various genres of the texts in order to see how they affect rhetoric. Genres are important to rhetoric because they raise and manage expectations the audience might have for a specific work. This is because people have internalized the generic conventions of a genre. We delved into these conventions by analyzing different genres of texts such as Pitbull’s music video, film, various poems, and speeches. An example of how we analyzed a genre is how we annotated Horace’s poem about carpe diem.
Rhetoric is used in all types of writing. It persuades an audience to accept or consider an idea. Two of the rhetorical appeals that are used in Kilbourne article are Logos and Ethos. The appeals to logos is the rhetors reasoning. In other words, logos is the way an author convinces his/her audience that an argument makes sense or seems logical by creating the technique of an argument.

Grant-Davie describes thoroughly the term rhetorical situation and how the development of the definition and its constituents has contributed to the discovery of the motives and responses behind any discourse. The analysis of rhetorical situations could determine the outer or inner influences of the rhetors, the audience, and their particular constraints. Grant Davie supports his claims by using the earlier definitions of scholars and teachers as his foundation. He also addresses his own analysis drawn by life experienced discourses which it also helps the reader understand the causes of rhetorical situations. My definition of rhetoric before the readings was simply: successful written or oral communication with a clear purpose & audience in mind. After completing the readings, I have decided that is not specific enough and does not encompass what rhetoric really is. The readings by Crusus, Channell, and Drucker helped establish a clear relationship between argument, “mature reasoning”, and communication as a mode used to communicate. Both of the readings provided a clearer understanding of argument and communication, key components to rhetoric, but did not change my definition until I read “The Rhetorical Situation” by Bitzer. The idea of a rhetorical situation, provided a clear application of the question: “What is rhetoric?”
In conclusion, Dana Gioia applies vocabulary and rhetorical appeals to actively influence his audience to agree to his argument. Furthermore, connecting his audience to the subject and inspiring them to help his issues and understand his
