The History of Texas Flags Texas is the second largest state. It measures 268,580 square miles and is located on the West South Central states of the United States. Texas borders Mexico on the southwest and the Gulf of Mexico on the southeast. As Austin is the state capital, Houston is the largest city in Texas. The state motto for Texas is simply “Friendship”. The name Texas originates from a Native American word meaning “friends” or “allies”(Spain, Charles). Texas became it’s own republic of the state. The republic had two official national flag. In 1836, the first flag for use on land was the “National Standard of Texas”. The Congress adopted the flag and President Sam Houston approved it on December 10, 1836 (Spain, Charles). The flag displayed a single large yellow five-pointed star centered on a dark blue background. This flag was known as David G. Burnet’s flag, which served as the national flag until January 25, 1839 (Six Flags Over Texas). Senator William H. Wharton introduced a bill describing the “Lone Star Flag” on December 28, 1838. A flag for Texas is the Texans Government defines the color red, white, and blue symbolizes revolution and freedom. The actual designer of the Lone Star Flag is unknown (Representatives).
