This is the story of how Whataburger started. At 1950, Harmon Dobson and Paul Burton were looking to open a hamburger restaurant. Dobson's goal was to "make a better burger that took two hands to hold and tasted so good that when you took a bite you would say What a burger. In June 1950, Dobson was granted the Whataburger trademark. In August of that year they opened their first location on Ayers Street in Corpus Christi, Texas, across from Del Mar College. The store sold burgers for 25 cents, and also sold drinks and chips.In 1951, Burton and Dobson ended their partnership after arguments concerning Dobson's price rise of the burger from 25 to 30 cents. Burton settled with owning the Whataburger franchises in San Antonio, Texas. Months later, prices for burgers were raised to 35 cents. In 1952, Dobson opened a location in Kingsville, Texas, the first store outside of Corpus Christi. In 1963, it expanded to Arizona and totaled 26 stores. In 1965, it estimated selling 15,000 burgers daily in the Texas Coastal Bend area. In 1967, the company commissioned the Flying W company logo, and the company had expanded to 40 restaurants in four states. On April 11, 1967, Dobson and an associate died in an airplane crash and Dobson's widow Grace took control of the business. Although Whataburger is loved in Texas it still competes against all other fast-food chains in the market and has a harder competition in out of state markets. Some of Whataburger’s biggest competitors are In-N-Out burger, Five Guys, McDonalds, Jack in the Box, and Chik-fil-A (“Whataburger Competitors”, n.d.). They do not compete only in financial revenue but also in areas where the public judges them like customer service, pricing, Product Quality, and Culture (“Whataburger Competitors”, n.d.). Among all these categories Whataburger continues to stay within the top five as shown in Figure 1.
Labor, social life, holidays, festivals, literature, and political decisions and actions in Texas was influenced by German immigrant culture in the 1830s when they immigrated to Texas. German culture was also influenced by Texas culture from the settlers that were already living in Texas. Both cultures assimilated together to form a German Texan culture. The German immigrants stuck to their political beliefs but also brought over new holidays, festivals, and literature that changed the life of many Texas in the German settlements. New literary ideas also sprouted when the German immigrants came over.
Fernando was from Porto, Portugal, and his family had emigrated to South Africa. The restaurant was then named after Fernando himself, and his son, who is also called Nando. The first restaurant was opened in Rosettenville, Johannesburg. The first international store was opened in 1992 in Earling West London. By 1997 there were 71 stores in South African and 46 stores worldwide and in 2012 the 1000th store was opened worldwide.
